HELP with Spanish Station in Philadelphia

Someone at WEMG tells me a new Spanish station will start later this week at 104.5FM. Does anyone know who is in charge of Spanish radio at Clear Channel? How do I reach this person?

I think you're wrong. Spanish radio is doing very well and Philadelphia needs a good station.

Well, let's see.....WEMG 1310, as far as I can tell, is NOT lighting up the Philly market. Why does it facilitate an FM signal, other than its just either a) your personal preference, and/or B) One less anglo station on the dial?

And, please, be honest......my BS detector is polished off and ready to go...

WEMG 1310 has a horrible signal. At night you can't even pick them up. I know of many cities with less than 300,000 that are thriving. Look at cities like Orlando, Fort Myers, Tampa, Raliegh to name a few.

they should bring back wjjz cause my dad loved that station keep the old timers happy too lol smooth jazz 104.5 but i wanna see y100 station on there

They should bring back WJJZ just because your dad liked it? Just kidding.

I do agree. Smooth jazz could do well in Philly if done right.

Tommy and Rockin' I am with you both. IMHO the European ethnic anglos have no full time format on either band, anywhere in the USA, can you say USA anymore. But these so and so's demand their rights, what rights. Today, I made a call and Spanish was first and English second. You know America is in bad shape, hey, America is an Italian name, where is the full time Italio format?????

Southern states, all. Philly is not a Southern state. Nor are we New York. Florida and New York have large Hispanic populations. The Lehigh Valley is inundated with them. Why hasn't WHOL 1600 taken off then?

Even in markets with a 5% hispanic population (A little over 300,000)?

Check KWSL in Sioux City, and you will find an 8.3. In Iowa.

In what demo?

Indians who speak spanish.

And, be careful, you cant quote numbers here, pally!

Hartford has a larger Hispanic Population then Philly does and we don't have an FM Spanish station either. A 5KW day/night signal at 910 AM and a 1KW day/125 watt night signal at 840 AM have a combined rating of about 3. (The 840 station also carries Polish and Italian Programming on Sundays) The other Spanish station a 1KW day/500 watt nite station at 1120AM does not show up in the ratings. Then again we also only have 9 FM stations in the market. (2 of them being hip-hop. Yes POWER has taken some listeners away from Hot but POWER is still the 9th ranked Hartford FM in a 9 station FM market).

"Spanish" Is A Language, Not A Format

It's completely foolish to suggest there is no room for a Spanish FM because of 1310's lackluster ratings.

Most of the crowd that station is aimed at (M/F 18-34, it's my understanding) is unaware an AM section is even on their radios. And as someone else mentioned, 1310 (even with the limitations of being an AM music station) is not a full Philadelphia signal. It does, admittedly, cover much of the area it "needs to" during the daytime.

Most radio geeks fail to understand the fact that "Spanish" is a language, not a format. Same thing for so-called "religious stations". A station like Salem's WFIL is as completely different from Norristown's WNAP as WMMR is to WDAS-FM. Some classify WKDN as the same "religious" format as they do a contemporary Christian station.

Just because there is a station broadcasting in the Spanish language doesn't mean all Spanish-speaking people are expected to be listening to it. Most of the people here speak English. WKDN broadcasts its programming in English. Shall I assume you all listen to WKDN?

All of the above being said, I do not believe for a moment WSNI will be going with any kind of Spanish format in the near future. But for reasons totally different than the ones I see mentioned here. The market is big, but not big enough. Yet. There are too many other much more profitable things for Clear Channel to do with the station currently. Fifteen years from now, that probably won't be the case. But for now, if I had money, I'd put it on something along the lines of "FM Talkradio 104.5" coming next week.

My suggestion is.........set up a 50 watt pirate radio station at Kensington and Lehigh.

Confused: If 104.5 does indeed go Spanish and there is only a 5% population then how are they ever going to get good ratings? How many of those Arbitron Diaries will go to that 5% population?

One would think in order for a Spanish station to get a good rating then the majority of those Diaries need to be sent to that 5% population...meaning the rating system is 'fixed'.........

As for Sioux City......what is their Hispanic population percentage?

Also Spanish on 104.9...a strong FM signal in an area with a higher spanish population, correct me if I am wrong, which also could be heard in Philadelphia failed.

104.5 should not go Spanish...it is simply not needed or wanted. (Where does Clear Channel get the idea that a Spanish station is needed??)

Only 8.3% of the population in Atlanta is Hispanic and CC has a Spanish station on there.

The thing is that the Hispanics in the Philly metro area for the most part speak English (oh sorry must be PC no Hill-camp for me in '09) are English dominant. Therefore I highly doubt a spanish station will appear on 1045, I think it will be rock or talk.

I could not recieve 104.9 on my walkman at the 29th Street Train Station in Philly in 2003. I also could not recieve 104.9 on my walkman at the Philly Airport in 2004 and 2005. 104.9 is also licensed to Egg Harbor City New Jersey. I believe that's part of the reason they are now known as SoJo 104.9 -South Jersey's Own.
