Herald: WBCN wooing Dennis, Callahan, "guy talk"?

It's in the Inside Track, so take it for what it's worth.

http://thetrack.bostonherald.com/moreTrack/view.bg?articleid=191234

"...rumor in radioland is that struggling rock station WBCN may be trying to woo sports yakkers John Dennis and Gerry Callahan away from WEEI. The broadcast blather has it that parent company CBS may be looking at changing the legendary Boston music station to a sports-talk or the so-called male-talk format...But others in the know say the station could be pursuing WEEI’s top-rated morning men with no plans to change its existing lineup of talk in the morning followed by rock the rest of the day."

It is a faked bidding war to up the costs at WEEI, rather than BCN really willing to replace O&A.

I think it's plausible that WBCN could be making a run at these guys. That station needs SOME-thing to make it relevant again in the morning.

Could be (a bidding war) like what CBS did for Loren & Wally: Five or so years ago Oldies made a run for L&W, which netted a HUGE deal for L&W with Greater Media .... I think Loren actually sent a thank you note to Ted Jordan:)

I thought O&A where building fairly nicely! Haven't seen the numbers, so I don't know. At least D&C would have the same commute!

But stranger things have happened before in Boston radio. Keeps it interesting for sure.

It's plausible but the agent is also trying to get as much for his client as possible by creating artifcial demand...Dennis' contract is up at year's end. He's represented by the same guy who represents Loren&Wally who almost had them moving to 103.3 four or five years ago. At the end, 105.7 greatly overpaid. L&W are currently in their option year, but wait for the rumors about them moving to 103.3 or 100.7 start coming out in the fall...

Bingo!

Yep could be a contract ploy but who knows. WBCN could easily do a guy talk or hot talk format. They could
indeed swipe John & Gerry from WEEI, put on O&A tape delayed, get Tom Leykis' syndie show (as some
"guy talk" stations have done); WFNY in NY is trying out Dennis Miller from CBS-associated Westwood One,
and maybe that would fit...

I know of two former WBCN jocks who have done talk shows: Bradley Jay, who now does fill ins for sister
station WBZ...and the other guy is in the slammer unless he got out by now (Mark P..)

Tai has done talk for WRKO (and music for WFNX and WZLX)...he could do a talk show.

btw the Free FM in NYC runs Leslie Gold "The Radio Chick" formerly of WRKO's Two Chicks Dishing and
her producer, who no doubt does some on air time, is Paul "Butchie" Brennan who used to be on Howie's
show. Free FM in NY also has O&A, Ron and Fez, John and Jeff, Dennis Miller (temp. tryout), etc.
Ron and Fez's show used to be carried here by WTKK overnight while WTKK does carry John & Jeff
(out of LA)

For another sports-related talker who could also do reg. talk, they could get Jimmy Myers.

Oh God please not Jimmy Myers, if anyone ever made a show more about himself and played the race card it was Myers.

On a side note Myers was basketball coach when I was at Grahm Junior College in 1979

If they want a sports identity along with guy talk, well, we had those rumors about the Bruins going to WZLX.
The 80 or so games per year could easily fit on WBCN.

One might imagine:
WBCN
6-10 am Dennis and Callahan
10am-1 pm Dennis Miller
1-3 pm (who knows)
3-7 pm Opie and Anthony tape delayed
and at night: Leykis, or shot-SCORE!!!!!Bruins...

I think it's D and C's agent trying to up their offers. Wbcn even if it wanted to replace O and A have no say in that, they had no say in whether they wanted to take the show in the first place. Cbs paying them what they're payng them do you actuallly think they would allow one of their larger sticks NOT to take the show? or to tape delay it?. NOT going to happen friends. This is as big a red herring as it gets and proof that D and C are worried that their numbers as good as they are do not justify the money they want.

For crying out loud, isn't the "guy talk" market in Boston already saturated? I realize that the appetite for hair care product ads is apparently unlimited, but give me a break.

(And, on a side note, we girls - well, all my friends - really don't care about hair. Is he funny? Do dogs and children like him? Does he cook?? Is he in shape - sorry, I guess I'm a little superficial too)

But then, the guys listening to D&C and O&A are probably after women who do care about hair, so there you go.

AAARRRGGG.

Thousands of watts of power directed at whom? not me, that's for sure. who's going after my demo/dollars? what am I supposed to listen to?

The funeral director.

I know that if the content were there, I'd prefer FM over AM...we all would, especially in the winter when the morning-time AM signals are in the muck and getting over-ridden by stations from Canada or elsewhere. Not everyone lives within Route 128 or 495. So I hope that they make the switch, although I see this more of a Trojan Horse than anything else. D&C are posturing, and my bet is that they'll stay right where they are. But for those of us in New Hampshire--even the very southern edge where I am--that winter AM signal from WEEI is horrible, at least until the sun is high enough in the sky and that 50k watt signal actually has some oomph.

Howard Stern is really THE KING OF ALL MEDIA ! Rock radio stations across America, is still trying to recover from ,"The After Howard, after shocks". :D

I'd welcome D&C going to WBCN so WEEI can go back to being a sports radio station between 6 and 10 AM

I hear ya' but that would not happen even if they left. That would be like saying that RKO would go back to being a centerest (sp)?) talk station if Rush and Howie left. Part of the reason that D and C have the numbers on EEI that they do have is that they are doing (albeit poorly) white, suburban, male, oriented talk. When they veer from sports is when they get into trouble (Metco Gorilla etc). In the case of D and C they're drawing in more than just a sports radio audience. I also agree that it is posturing and they are not going anywhere.
