Hey, Beautiful Music fans....

Don hits it right on the nail when he talks about DAB/HD Radio on this site. I like it when somebody calls it like it is.

The fidelity of this site is excellent. Anyone can throw a crummy sounding low-bit feed on and call it good. This guy took the time to make audio quality a priority.

That's not only remarkably rare, for this genre in particular, it's almost unheard of.

Keep up the good work!

I don't have sound on my computer or a fast enough connection to use it and do other stuff at the same time, but I will comment about what I read in messages from my Yahoo group.

DirecTV dropped XM Escape and replaced it with DMX contemporary instrumentals, but now they've added DMX beautiful instrumentals. No vocals, but if I was spending that kind of money that would be my preference.

Well, that depends. "Contemporary Instrumentals" evokes thoughts of "Smooth Jazz" IMHO. DMX "Beautiful Instrumentals" might sound good. You might wanna check their web site to make sure and....DROP EVERYTHING - NOW!.

What the hell is THIS?!

Radio...for your NOSE?

Now we have truly gone too far.....

I post in a Yahoo group. Someone who posts there was taking a survey and said something about beautiful music radio.

The questioner thought he meant classical music. No, he said. Oh, the person said, you mean like soft rock or Genesis. Never mind, the person said.

lol, part of the problem with people not knowing what the term "beautiful music" means is because the term is a name coined by radio stations for the format many years ago (it's "radio-speak"). The term "beautiful music" might have been employed quite a bit on the radio years ago, but these days, people have no idea what a "beautiful music" station is/was. I would think maybe the term "easy listening" would help make the connection with the format, but these days, some folks think some types of AC are easy listening. You could say "muzak" or "elevator music" in describing it (the negative terms used for beautiful music) and then they'd probably be able to grasp it. ::)

He might hae said easy listening. I'll post the exact quote here if I can find it.

Muzak and elevator music wouldn't help. People use those terms to refer to soft rock.

I would think the term "beautiful music" would be instrumental easy listening, or easy listening and classical combined together and no jazz.

My recollection of Beautiful Music stations is that they largely sounded like Crystal Radio Canada. Maybe not exactly, but close, instrumental versions of Pop Standards & popular songs of the day mixed with 2 to 4 vocals per hour. The vocals would be timeless classics, Tommy Edwards "It's All In The Game" & Bobby Vinton's "Blue Velvet" were always amoung them.

 What happened to the message I spent so much time typing?

This is actually what a station sounds like near where I live. It's a shame this one Rush Limbaugh/Glenn Beck station has such a strong signal. They had a succession of failed formats over the years (though Spanish worked and I don't know why they'd change) simply because of the poor signal. And the beautiful music station supposedly improved their signal but it hasn't helped ME.

I do get to hear this station more in the mountains, though. It's amazing. The announcers and even the commercials sound like beautiful music used to. Too bad so much of the music is actually classical rather than the perkier instrumental versions of hit songs (this may be a good thing considering the NPR station may have backed off of music somewhat; I have a 24-hour classical station where I live, though) . Although they occasionally do have some fun stuff.

It's all Christian on Sunday, though if I have to listen to Christian music, this is what I'd choose.

Message? I didn't see any message. ???

I know which station you're talking about--it's in Greenville, SC. I heard it several years ago when driving on I-85. Easy listening and mostly classical, and religious at night. I've heard the announcer said "and then we'll play some more beautiful music." The kind of music my Mom&Dad would only listen to when growing up. It even had a much better selection of Christmas music than those on AC station during the holiday seasons, IMO.

Airstream FM probably comes closest to what 70s-80s vintage beautiful music stations sounded like. Crystal Radio Canada comes close. To my ears, Crystal Radio (and another Canadian Stream "Dreamradio") are probably like what beautiful music stations would have evolved into had the format been able to survive to current times. Same basic approach, but a little more uptempo by virtue of being more contemporary.

Fans of the "classic" beautiful music format might also want to check out "Brasilia Super Radio FM". Breaks and commercials (both limited) are in Portugese. But the music itself is instantly familiar....as is the Schulke format comprising about 90% of the broadcast day.

Thanx Dad....Airstream slipped my mind....I'll try to check Brasilia this weekend.

BTW it seems that WKTZ in Jacksonville FL is adding a lot of vocals.

IIRC, you may encounter some specialty programming on weekends. Classical Music (or Opera), religious etc. Still mainly beautiful music, however. I generally listen late evenings just before calling it a day. Automated and announcer-less then....just like the Schulke formatted stations used to be.

This was late at night, possiby around sunrise, about 3 weeks ago when Tropo was montrous (I live near Miami)...heard it on 90.9. Twas the Carpenters, but I forget the tune.

Ooops! I was referring to the Brazilian, but I cut and pasted incorrectly. My bad. Sorry.
