Hey Sam Clover, it is KAY-WHY-DOUBLE-YOU

You know, I distinctly remember Sam pronouncing the calls clearly some years ago. Seems like it's a deliberate change - which makes it even more annoying.

Like I said.... Intentional. ;-)

While we're at it, can someone explain to Cheryl Elias that she needs to sound SOMEWHAT happy to be there, and also to not step over the end of every commercial, report, and piece of production? The station sounds WELL below amateur when she's on in the afternoon.
And while they're at it, tell Carol McKenzie ( I think that's her name, in the early morning) NOT to sound so freakin happy?

It's intentional. Everyone on KYW mangles the call letters. Something about annoying people into paying attention. Remember Beth Tripani? She even mispronounced her own name. If I hadn't read it on the website I'd have continued thinking it was Kirpani. Her way of annunciating KYW was the worst on record. Keh-worba-deel.

Christ, I forgot about Beth Chirpani and Keh-worba-deel.

Strongly agree about Sam. He irritates the living hell out of me. The biggest thing about KYW that annoys me is how many of the anchors seem to flat out refuse to give the official temperature for Philadelphia. INDEPENDENCE MALL IS NOT AND NEVER WILL NEVER BE THE OFFICIAL REPORTING STATION. Not to mention Independence Mall isn't even a reporting station- Philadelphia International Airport is the official reporting station for the city of Philadelphia. I can't think of any other all news radio stations that ignore the official temperature for the major city that they cover.

The biggest offenders of this seem to be Ed Abrams, Harry Donahue, Vince Hill and Steve Nikazy.

Woe. The official average mean temperature needs to measured adjacent to the refineries. Then all will be right with the world and terrestrial radio again. You're so right. Who would ever think that measuring the temp in Center City would apply to anyone with two feet.

It's the fact that some of the anchors completely don't say what the official temperature is at all that annoys me.

I agree with the Sam and Cheryl hate. My daughter when she first heard Sam's report, she was convinced that he never said his name or the radio station. He kind of blurs all of it together.
As far as Cheryl is concerned, at a quarter of or quarter after, the jingle barely gets to ...1060...and she is rattling off her intro.

Hey cheryl, slow down and wait a second so we can actually hear you and more importantly hear the news story.

But on the other hand, who actually uses 1060 for news? Isnt it just a traffic station? :)

Yes I've even heard Cheryl step on the outro to the LIVE weather report! I don't think she likes headphones. Maybe she doesn't like having the teletype in her ear. ;D

Want clear pronunciation of 1060's calls back in the day? Try Bill Gregory... "K.Y.W news time [time of day]".
