High school football coverage WGSO tonight(Friday)

just in case you have a favorite area high school team you'd like to keep tabs on, Ken Trahan at WGSO-AM 990 starts his annual high school football report show with live updates for countless games from 6:05-10:30.
If you can listen then I'd appreciate it, it's also on www.bizneworleans.com

Why bother?
That station has statistically NO listeners, technically NO signal, and Trahan NO shame with his constant self-applause.
If I'm gonna bother with prep sports I'll go with the "big boys" at 870 where at least I can listen to it outside of the 70006 zip code.

No problem on the reply, though I don't personally think Ken Trahan is caught up in self-applause like other broadcasters are. WGSO does have a hard time competing with WWL based on output...but so does every AM station in the New Orleans market. And of course, at night all non-50,000 watt AM stations have to cut back on their signal....so yes, their night-time coverage is smaller in audience. But it's really not a bad show, especially if you listen to the high school show on the internet.

Agreed.
From the little I've heard, it's not a bad show at all, in fact, many of the reporters are pretty good, and many of the participants seem to really want to make a difference and do a service... my point is why bother?

For WGSO to do basically the exact same show as a giant like WWL on the equivilant of a CB signal is stupid and a waste of time.

There is probably not another city in the country where 2 stations try and do basically the exact same kind of show on Friday nights, in most cities, the efforts like this are consolodated on one station that can actually reach people who care.

As far as being "not a bad show... especially...on the internet," with all do respect, it can be as good of a show as there is in the world, but on Friday nights, only the guys with pocket-protectors and tape around the bridge of their glasses are sitting in front of the computers... everyone else is living "life." Good "radio" has one little important feature to qualify as good "radio"... you actually have to be able to pick it up on a "radio."

If you feel that way about WWL having competition on Friday night with the exact same programming then no problem. However, I've learned that stations providing information in a competitive style is great for the industry. Frankly if WGSO and WWL had the exact same output, it would be very interesting to see how the two shows would do in that regard.
WWL is a very blessed station because back in 1939, their G.M. (whose name I forget) was smart enough to get a 50,000 watt license in order to move up from I believe 10,000 watts & from 850 to 870 on the dial in an era when the FCC wanted to establish stronger stations in pockets across the country so in both daytime & nighttime, citizens who lived in smaller communities would have a better chance of picking up network affiliates they normally wouldn't be able to get.
As for the internet comment, until wireless internet becomes more popular then yes, not many people will be listening in a "portable" sense compared to the radio. But with that statment, then WWL/Entercom should get rid of their internet feed because obviously people have lives on Friday night and they should refund sponsor's money who bought advertising space on the website since obviously according to your own words most people just aren't listening to the internet.
If you truly feel that WGSO's Friday Night show is not relevant then don't worry about it, just listen to WWL and maybe if others think just like you then the show will go away and you won't have to worry about it anymore. Besides, back in the late 1990s Ken Trahan now of WGSO brought the high school update show to WWL before leaving for other projects & doing the show at other outlets.
None the less, be happy that you enjoy WWL's Friday night show and don't worry about the other guys....I'm sure they'll manage their best without you as a listener.

Ksw, what is your point? The fact is, Trahan’s show kicks WWL’s in the butt. As I recall, Trahan did it originally and then left, and WWL tried to do it, but comes in a distant second. Also, on a more general level, WWL’s sports staff, for a “giant,” really stinks. Hebert is funny, Wilkinson can’t finish a sentence without stammering five times, and Zeke is a goober. For a 50K watt station, you’d think they have some A quality people.

My point(s) are obvious to anyone who is not an idiot. You ned, have made 3 posts on these boards, and all have bashed WWL, so I think we know now that you have a "rooting" interest and a rather disturbing obsession with WWL... you hate them, but you MUST listen.
Funny. ;D

By the way, KSW, how come you did not respond to the substance of my complaints - bad broadcasters, people who can’t finish a sentence, cheerleading, etc.? Is it because you think they broadcasters are GREAT? That Wilkenson CAN finish a sentence? That they do NOT cheerlead? Come on, what is your response?

After 5 posts, all bashing WWL.
When, exactly, was it great?
The Croatian Cajun days?
Bob Ruby, Eric Tracy days?
Ed Clancy days?
Rob Aubert-Todd Bower days?
JR Gash Days?
Hap Glaudi Days?
When it provided life saving information in the post-Katrina aftermath days?
I always get a kick whenever someone says something like "it used to be great but now it stinks."
That's usually "code" for "I hate them because they rejected me."

Re: "Bashing WWL" comment/KSW's opinion

In reply to KSW's "5 replies bashing WWL":
KSW, please don't put me in the "bashing" category because you may be upset with another person. My reply was never against WWL, it's against your commentary on "geeks and nerds" sitting by their computer Friday nights to hear high school football reports.
I've never had a problem with WWL, in fact Bob DelGiorno I think is a fine morning show host along with Monica, Tommy Tucker, Don Dubuc, as well as Spud & Garland, etc.

In terms of sports coverage, I'm happy WWL has been able to cover many aspects of the Saints & other teams/sports from the hosts' own prespective or style. Sure, I don't always agree with things stated on the air or maybe a manner in which something is presented, but at the same time that doesn't mean it's garbage. If anything, I think Marc Chifici should have more air time because he has a great way of picking on himself....great sense of humor.

If you truly believe that my earlier comment was derogatory then so be it, I won't try to change your mind. At the same time, there's a lot of decent radio in New Orleans that may never get the attention WWL does on the AM dial, and frankly I really enjoy a variety of choices regardless of output. Though frankly, I do miss David Tyree tremendously for I considered him a good person who was always able to pass along kind words to me during difficult times & he allowed me to be a guest of his show in 1996.

I also don't care to bash individual hosts at WWL (or any outlet) either because frankly it's not an easy job, especially if it's your full-time occupation, the only exception I would have to this "policy" is where someone made a comment off-color or "out of bounds" etc.

WWL is pretty lucky in having you as a supporter & I'm sure they appreciate it, just like I've been lucky to be a fan of many different stations & broadcasters over the years....including Kenny Wilkerson & Bobby Hebert who have been nothing but considerate to me the few times we've met in person over the years (or talked on the air). Ken Trahan at WGSO has been very cordial to me as well, though I've known him thanks to his operations at the Saints Hall of Fame in Kenner & UNO.

Don't be so concerned with people's comments on WWL because realistically whether we state positive or negative comments it won't change anything on Poydras St.

Ken Trahan is good on-air BUT...

In my opinion, WWL is still the best station in town, but they have no real competition. Yes, it's true, they were better years ago, before Entercom took over and long before that. Sure, if I could play fantasy program director, I would make a few on-air changes.

As for Ken Trahan, he's nice in person, he's good on-air and could do a better job than others at WWL, but...
he just loves himself a little too much for my taste. In person, in my opinion, he comes across as very proud and conceited. My advice to him would be: Ken, let others talk about how good you are, don't toot your own horn so much. Be more modest and humble like Archie Manning because people won't see your talent if they can't get past your ego. 8)

KSW, how come you STILL did not respond to the substance of my complaints - bad broadcasters, people who can’t finish a sentence, cheerleading, etc.? Is it because you think they broadcasters are GREAT? That Wilkenson CAN finish a sentence? That they do NOT cheerlead? Come on, what is your response?

As for your questions, yes, the station was better pre-Entercom. I am not sure I understand your point about being rejected - how does a radio station reject someone?

Come on, answer my questions. Or, can’t you answer them because you know I am right?

Nashdonal.
Please accept that I did not in any way think your posts were bashing anyone. You take a compelling position and one that I cannot really disagree with.

I was referring specifically to nedryerson's posts. Now up to 6 posts, and all bashing WWL.

Emarti nailed it pretty good IMO, your coments about Trahan said it better than I could have.

and ned, I do indeed disagree with everything you state. I also, based on your inane goadings, believe that not only do I disagree with what you post, I probably disagree with anything you've ever thought, and even probably disagree with your unconscious thoughts.

I think that WWL has some great broadcasters (Garland, Monica, Hebert.) 2 weeks ago, when Kenny W and Gajan (sp?) were certain that the Saints were horrible, the last thing I thought was that they were "cheerleading." To suggest that Wilkerson "can't complete a sentence" is absurd. It's a personal attack, IMO. I think his perspective on the Saint's has an "insider" component unlike any other in the market.
I also think the station is much better today than it was, say, 5 years ago... The Post Katrian coverage is a testimony to that, but I can't tell you when Entercom came along.

In response to KSW recent post.....

KSW,
Thanks for the reply, like I stated before WWL-am will always rule the output on AM.
There's good programming of different kinds on other AM outlets but once again in terms of promotion & structure WWL is hard to beat on that band.

As for the Saints coverage, Hokie & Bobby as ex-players do promptly criticize when they feel it necessary. As for Kenny Wilkerson, I think people stereotype him as being a cheerleader or "in the Saints pocket" because from what I can remember, when Buddy was around he & Kenny seemed to be "polar-opposites" at times (not all the time) but at times on selected Saints issues...which I thought was good for debating purposes on the air. When Buddy unfortunately left this world in January 2005, I think a lot of fans of his show felt like a huge void was left behind in terms of "checks and balances" of the Saints organization.
As a result, whether it's Kenny or anyone that would take over that time slot following Buddy...most local sportscasters are going to look like a cheerleader compared to Buddy's style of radio.

As for WWL's golden age....I guess it just depends on what era you grew up or when you felt they had the best overall performances. I know people that really enjoyed the Dawnbusters era from 1948-52 with Al Hirt & Pinky Vadocovich. Maybe the Blue Room Shows with Leon Kelner, personally I loved Ed Clancy, he knew how to make people feel at home.

Well, I'm getting tired of typing. Bottom line, I love my radio variety, regardless of AM or FM position.

Oh....and if I do have one major beef with Entercom (though not a big one), it's when they released Athena & Duncan from 105.3 the Zone the first week of January 2005 (three days before Buddy died) in order to use their salaries to pay for the Walton and Johnson show coming over to Entercom from the Clear Channel outlet in New Orleans. Athena had a tremendous presence that I really didn't get from a lot of FM female DJs and I wish she would have stuck around longer. She's now in Fresno, California doing morning shows (www.catcountry1029.com).

Take care.

Wait just a minute!!!! Now I get it!!!! KSW = Kenny Wilkinson!!!! How could I be so stupid and miss this??!! Now I see why the big defense. Kenny, I apologize if any of my comments were biting - they were not meant to be. Perhaps I was a bit hard on you. Nevertheless, the substance of my comments stands. Wow, sometimes the truth is right in front of your face and you don’t see it. Amazing.....

nash - The Blue Room era... awesome. Pinky and Pete - I wish there was audio lying around...
ned - you make me laugh out loud with each of your posts. You SOUND like the "angry guy" at the office we all make fun of behind his back.
I'm not Kenny, but I would LOVE to have his gig... getting paid to watch closed practices?
Priceless!

KSW, I will NEVER believe that you are not him. NOBODY could be such a cheerleader for him, except him (or perhaps his mom). It’s okay, you can admit it. $50 says you are him - money goes to the winner’s favorite charity. Is it a bet?

I can't be Kenny Wilkerson...
Remember, you said "he can't complete a sentence." ;D
No bet, I'll maintain my anonymity.
But I have noticed one thing...
You're really hung up on the "cheerleading" thing.
Maybe you still carry scars from a bad high school experience. :-* :'( :-*
I know, cheerleaders can be SO vicious.

:'(

Man, oh, man, I GOTCHA!!! You can't believe someone as dumb as me could get you, can you? It's funny - your name - KSW - is so obvious. I have never believed in coincidence, and I will not start now, now matter how loud you protest.

Hey, what I said was that you can't complete a sentence without stammering. I don't think I said that you were incapable of typing.

As for those private practices you are so proud of, this link reminds me of you:

Finally, as far as maintaining anonymity, it's too late - you have been OUTED!

Have a good day, KENNY!!
