high school play by play announcers

One of the best high school play by play announcers for football is also a college announcer. Billy Morgan, who is the voice of the Heber Springs Panthers on 100.7, the Wave, is also the voice of the Harding Bison on 95.3, the Voice.

Hands down from a technical standpoint and with the play-by-play announcers they have, El Dorado's broadcasts are among the best. Sandy Sanford does a good job. KHPA does a good job with both Hope and Prescott. Arkadelphia has always had good announcers. Ashdown is on Bob-FM in Texarkana and they are decent.

Gotta admit...Billy is one of the best around. Sounds good and does his homework. Although I have not personally heard them, I have been told that Sandy and his group does a very good job as does the stations at Hope and Arkadelphia.
I havn't had the opportunity to listen to them in a while, but at one time, Dan Gregory at Magnolia did well.

I'm partial on this one, but Mike Woodrum did a good job for me for a number of years on the Conway games. Great voice and did his homework, but developed vision problems in the mid-to-late 90's.

Let me throw another one in there...Grant Merrill does a fine job as well. He is the only person that I know that can call a game in northwest arkansas during an afternoon and then all of a sudden end up calling yet another game somewhere in central arkansas that night.

I knew there was a reason I bestowed legend status on him at such an early age.... ;D

Boy this is bringing back some memories now that I have time to think about it. Monty I can remember many a time back in the day when you would feed a state tournament game to whatever station I was working at. You were always outstanding yourself. I drive to Fayetteville a night ahead for a lot of the Razorback games on Friday nights and get to hear a lot. I have listened to KURM a lot while I was up there, and before he became mayor of Rogers, Steve Womack was one of the best in the state hands down. He still does some of the games when the ol' Colonel is away. You mentioned Grant Merrill being very good.. Back when ARN had the state tournament rights we'd see him at the state basketball tournament and it wasn't unusual for him to do six or seven games in row. He was doing ballgames for Memphis stations when he was in high school.. He has always helped just about everyone out in a pinch if he wasn't busy. Richard Benson at KXJK in Forrest City hasn't missed a Friday night with them in I want to say thirty years. He is great as well. When I worked at KFFA in Helena for a brief time, he was doing the games back then and that was in the early eighties.

I agree...all good!

This seems like a good place to put this. Harold Nichols stepped down this season as the PBP for Morrilton High School on KVOM. He was honored in 2005 for 50 YEARS of being a part of that broadcast. He started working the board for the games in '55 and began PBP sometime in the 60's.

I remember reading something about Mr. Nichols and his long service. What about announcers with passion? Lendall Staggs over in Wynne is an announcer who is very passionate about the Yellowjackets. Also, back in the 90's, Russ Lindsey was exciting to listen to when he was the voice of the Beebe Badgers on the old KPIK.

To me, it would have to be Bill Boswell with KHOZ in Harrison.. although he doesn't do it anymore, he was the greatest.. I think he still does basketball sometimes, but he has the best voice and just is really great at it.

Rich...this is way before your time, but I remember when Harold use to tape delay the Morrilton games and play them back on Saturday morning when KVOM was just a daytimer. Although we always knew the outcome of the game, I always listened to Harold. He was one of the GREATS!!!

Thank you for the high praise Montrose... your check is in the mail.

Some of my favorite play-by-play announcers in the state have included Tom Kamerling from Russellville. He taught me a lot... Dee Doyle was another good one.

Someone mentioned KURM.. .All of the Womacks call a great ball game.. That would be Kermit, Steve, and Chris. Being a band nerd in high school, I learned most of my play-by-play from listening to them when I would run the board at KARV. My athletics was limited to Boys and Girls Club basketball in elementary school.

He was sure a different bird, but one of the most entertaining was the late Pat Fortune that worked for Kermit for years and years. He would come up with the funniest expressions ("Scratch my back with a hacksaw... I don't believe what I just saw!") Many of those expressions came from the HOURS and HOURS of play-by-play that he had collected over the years on cassette tape. I believe he told me the hacksaw was from a hockey announcer in Pittsburgh.

Gary Campbell from Harrison is good. He has filled the shoes of "The Boz" quite nicely.

sportsannouncer, in your area I really like Mark Lamberth from Batesville. A heck of a nice guy, and a great play-by-play man.

Mogul, there have been some entertaining announcers in north Central Arkansas. I remember a guy that used to do the Harding Academy games when they were on 97.7FM. Not the best announcer out there, but a heck of a nice guy. You could tell when HA did something good because he would almost yell into the radio(haha). As far as good radio voices, the gentleman that does the Crossett games on 99.5 I believe has a voice great for radio. Scott Siler from over in Stuttgart is another good PBP announcer.

That made me think of some of the expressions Harold would say during the 13 years we did games together on-air. But the magical thing was, he never used them more than once - so it was always fresh, you never knew what was coming out: "Quick as a hiccup," to describe a fast point guard; "We'll be back with your post-game stats after Rich does his two-dums and go-den-zuhs," referring to math, of course; and my favorite, describing a player that had a pass thrown to him right on the numbers while standing still ... the dropped the ball - "I don't believe it. He dropped it like a stolen watermelon!"

I also miss hearing Keith Merritt as voice of ASU years ago. I loved hearing "BOTTOM!" when the Tribe would hit a three-pointer.

You guys have come up with a real good list. Probably my 2 favorites are Staggs in Wynne and Morgan in Heber. And Monty's great in Conway.

I used to do a Friday night scoreboard score in the NEA. I used to have a bunch of pxp guys call in. There's a guy at Valley View that I thought did real good job...I just can't remember his name. I'm sure Mogul knows who it is...he knows everyone

I was in Hot Springs last weekend, The guys on 101.9 doing Lake Hamilton were very clean cut, good delivery. I hadn't heard Trent and his partner on 96.7 untill now. Good energy, his color guy was a little monotone, but his stats were informative. Then heard a crew from Mt. Ida? they sounded good.

Wow, what a great list of names to have done play-by-play over the years. I didn't see Brad Haworth from Mountain Home. He is one of the most thorough broadcasters I ever met or worked with over the years. I must admit, that I miss seeing all of you during football and basketball season. Especially my good friend Monty Rowell. Monty, quick side bar, Dr. Boswell and I both say thank you very much for all that you did. It will never be forgotten.
A final note, I think I am like a lot of you, and was skeptical on how Chuck Barrett would do with the Razorbacks. Well, my skepticism is gone. He is doing awesome, and I only see it getting better. Now if the Hogs just could get it together. Hope to hear from many of you in the future.

jim davis from kcxy in camden does an outstanding job on camden-fairview cardinals games.

also, if you ever get the chance to hear bob parks do smackover buckaroos play-by-play do so. he's a party all by himself.

Hey Monty,

The ability to spot future legend's in itself is a supreme talent! Grant does do a nice job, I've managed to catch him several times during my travels of the state. Man, this topic has been a walk down memory lane for me.

Who is the announcing team for the Cabot games on 104.7FM? Are the Panther games still on that particular station? Also, in your expert opinions, who are some of the best young announcers across the state?
