high school play by play announcers

Hey Monty,

The ability to spot future legend's in itself is a supreme talent! Grant does do a nice job, I've managed to catch him several times during my travels of the state. Man, this topic has been a walk down memory lane for me.

I'm fairly certain that we could go on and on for a few days on some of these guys.

I havn't been up in that part of the world for a while, but there use to be some pretty good play by play guys in western and northwest Arkansas.

Although we all started in the news biz, Steve Rinke, Marty Houston and myself all started about the same time in the mid-to-late 70's. I use to see these guys and others often, but that doesn't happen much any more since I have a college schedule.

I've got to tell you that I really miss doing high school ball, particularly during state tournament time. I had rather call the small classification state tournament any day of the week and twice on Sunday over the larger classification. It is just more fun and the schools and the fans seemed to always appreciate it.

I try to sneak over to Conway High or St. Joseph two to three times during the season, but that has become more and more difficult.

This has been a fun discussion.....

Let me throw another one in there...Grant Merrill does a fine job as well. He is the only person that I know that can call a game in northwest arkansas during an afternoon and then all of a sudden end up calling yet another game somewhere in central arkansas that night.

I knew there was a reason I bestowed legend status on him at such an early age.... ;D

Who is the announcing team for the Cabot games on 104.7FM? Are the Panther games still on that particular station? Also, in your expert opinions, who are some of the best young announcers across the state?

Those guys rock! I especially like the work of the color guy!!

Hey...who is announcing the Cabot games? I'm curious. My family's from there and I try to stay in touch with the little town that's grown into a city of it's own.

The Cabot games are on 104.7 from Searcy. A guy named Greg Hammond from Searcy does the pxp. He's not a radio guy. I (Steve Marston) do the color and produce the games.

Steve, this is Shane Smith, aka the voice of the Beebe Badgers. If I'm not mistaken, you produced a post-game show over in Wynne a few years ago, similar to the one that 103.7 does. I used to call in as much as I could every Friday night. I remember you telling me that you actually commuted from Cabot to Wynne daily. It sounds like you were able to find something a "little" closer to home. Shoot me a PM sometime.

We will get Steve back on the air in Central Arkansas beyond Cabot football!! He and I go back a long way and he is very talented in the areas of sports and just radio in general.... He should be added to the list of great play-by-play people...

I was just glad that there was another post-game scoreboard show on Friday nights besides the one on 103.7. Steve did a very good job with the show. He actually let people talk and give highlights of the games and didn't play favorites. I could see him in some type of management role.

A bit off the subject of current announcers, but one that I really enjoyed listening to and occasionally working with was Glenn O'Neill who called the Fort Smith Southside Football games in the 80's and 90's on KWHN-AM. Also enjoyed working with Monty Rowell for UCA sports and Marty Houston in western Arkansas in the early to mid 90's as well.

Mogul and Sports...thanks for the nice words. I miss the Friday night show. My goal was to be different than the Buzz's show. I think we were. I just wish we could still be on, but them's the breaks.

Greg is leaving because his son will be on Searcy's high school team next year. I'm expecting to come back.
