Hip Hop and Rap Over??

Well, you knew the ride wasn't going to last forever. I am actually surprised it has lasted this long. Don't get me wrong, I like some hip-hop and rap music, but I think it has saturated the industry to the point where it has taken away from other genres of music. I can't do hip-hop and rap 24-7. What about more slow jams, urban and underground dance songs, etc? Of course, rap will not completely go away, but I think it has run its course in the mainstream. THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!
You and me BOTH!!! :(I'd MUCH RATHER listen to Dance / Techno / Electronic music than to that Hip-Hop junk!!MTV has 2 ENTIRE DIGITAL CHANNELS of Hip-Hop on digital cable!!Those are VH1 Soul and MTV Jams.I think that that's ONE Hip-Hop channel TOO MANY!!What about the Rock fans?MTV Jams pretty much took over the channel that was occupied by MTV X, and that was a GOOD Rock video channel!!Same story goes for VH1 Mega Hits!! That channel was a GOOD Rock video channel!! But in this case, MTV Networks chose to gut this channel in favor of "LOGO" (which is a general entertainment channel for the GLBT (Gay/Lesbian/Bi-Sexual/Trans-Gendered) community).Yes. Maybe they TOO deserve their own digital channel. But I DON'T think that us Rock video fans should be thrown to the wolves because of that, though!! :(And to this date, there has not be ONE attempt at a Dance video channel yet!!Canada has BPM:TV. Australia has Club [V] (which is a spin-off of Channel [V] there).I think that the U.S.A. should get its own Dance music video channel on digital cable!!What do you all think of that idea?DeanSB
VH1 Soul is not a channel dedicated to hip-hop, but a channel dedicated to R&B and NeoSoul which is not hip-hop.

But do they play some old-school hip-hop every so often. It needs to be reminded that people in radio are not great risk-takers--and it is very apparent that R&B and hip-hop have become the dominant American popular music forms, whether you like it or not. And if it is what the target audience wants to hear, they're going to play it. That's how both radio and television works and that's not going to change any time soon.

I think a lot of you are making comments on a genre of music you don't like or understand. Hip Hop is not going anyhwhere and I don't see why any of you are entertaing the thought of it. Many top 40 stations in the United States have been adding more and more hip hop and urban artists to there playlists becuase that is what's popular with most people. The #1 song on pop radio this week was Sean Paul's HIP HOP song Temperature. Anyway you look at it Hip Hop has become the mainstream and some of you just can't stand it.
No. I can't stand it.I liked Hip-Hop better back in the late-1980's/1990's.But I think that, in this decade, Hip-Hop has been overplayed just WAAAAAAY TOO MUCH!! :-(I'd much rather listen to Dance / Techno music than to this Rap junk!! :-(And when MTV/VH1 have 2 WHOLE CHANNELS of Hip-Hop, but yet NO Rock or Dance channels to speak of, I think that the writing's on the wall...there's just TOO MUCH Hip-Hop now!! :-(Just because some executive in New York, Hollywood, or Los Angeles SAYS that "Hip-Hop is popular now.", DOSEN'T make that so!! :-(What do they base those statements on, anyway??A survey of about, what?...2000 people?? 3000 people??That dosen't come close to what may well be popular!! :-(DeanSB
That's why you can just change the channel. You shouldn't be upset that people like a certain genre of music. If you like dance listen to the dance station.

That much IS true. But it STILL SUCKS that there's NO Dance video channel on the digital cable here in the U.S...YET!!Canada has BPM:TV, and unfortunately, they're still growing in Canada, so they've explained that they cannot import their channel into the U.S. at this time. The ONLY channel that COMES CLOSE to being a Dance music video channel is A3: Nightlife TV. But that channel dosen't broadcast to the entire U.S....ONLY to viewers of cable in Miami & South Florida. We need a NATIONAL Dance video channel, like both Canada and Australia have! And for HEAVEN'S SAKES, we NEED a Rock video channel on digital cable as well!!Isn't digital cable supposed to be about more "niche" programming choices?Considering THAT to be the purpose of more "specialized" digital channels, WHY dosen't MTV/VH1, or some other company, offer a Rock or Dance video channel to us viewers here in the U.S.?There IS a BONA-FIDE audience for these!! :)VH1 Classic, as we speak, is dedicating an ENTIRE MONTH (this month) to Heavy Metal music!!So don't tell me that there's no audience for that, when clearly, there IS!!And as for Dance music, I think it's VERY UNFAIR that this music isn't given more of a chance to have its own channel here in the states, unlike Canada and Australia. If they can do it, why can't we??DeanSBDeanSB

Yeah, but you do have to admit that hip-hop is starting to burn itself out. A lot of hip-hop stations that used to be higher in numbers just last year are starting to lose ground in the ratings. I am actually starting to see more R&B and Pop songs gaining popularity now than hip-hop.

What "dance channel" are you speaking of? There aren't any dance video channels in the United States. I think that is a lot of the problem. I feel that some individuals automatically gravitate to hip-hop because nine times out of ten that is all they are exposed to. Besides, hip-hop wouldn't be popular if it weren't for the street visionaries who promoted the music in the first place to corporate america to get them to see that it could make money. The same thing needs to happen with the dance genre.

Now THAT'S what I am talking about. :)Even if the majority of Dance videos are imports at this time, I STILL feel that a Dance video channel would do well here in the states, and would gain a loyal following. And the same goes for having a Rock video channel too. There's both BONA-FIDE audiences for both genres of music, and digital cable should offer those kinds of channels to their subscribers. But how to go about getting people to demand that the cable companies offer such channels?DeanSB

I'm finding the lower quality hip hop though (same repetative beat with a few new words) is leaving the air for more mainstream general hop hop that you find on CHR radio more of a mainstream hip hop like Lil John.I have found that the kids who were big hip hop fans say a year/year and a half are still listening to hip hop but not to the extent that they were..(the white wannabes) ... Some are going country but I find they are rediscovering Rock groups such as Mudvayne and such.Hip-hop for a long time always had something new and fresh in it's sound (east vs west coast, dirty south, New Orleans bounce) .. Hip hop however hasn't had anything hot in about 2-3 years so I think the interest level is going downward (with sparks for some of the name talent like luda and others). Is it going anywheres? No But is it's popularity that a few years ago was white hot is lessining and is changing more mainstream to find an audience (more Nelly style).... yes...RFLA

Well HIP HOP in the 80s was MUCH DIFFERENT AND BETTER than todays HIP HOP garbage!! (No doubt about that!!)
