HIPPIE POWERS UP ??

This morning headed out to Copokville at 6am..Listened to Hippie all the way to the Wilson-Smith county line before it splattered big time..Usually I run out of it long before then...was this sudden surge weather related ?? As a side note..no morning jock..Chris Lucky was not doing his show..just voicer's..is he still there ?? I seldom leave Nashville that late..so I don't get to hear his morning show before I'm out of range ...

Well, they are "your hippie blowtorch..."

I heard Chris Lucky the other day. Dad sent me a text asking what the old hippie station frequency is so I decided to tune in again since it had been awhile.

I believe I finally caught it down here in AL yesterday, but it could have just been rejoiner music on a show on Birmingham's WJOX I was hearing, I was busy trying to find an open frequency so didn't stick around long enough for an ID

Well now, I can tell you that Chris is live and local.

The signal carrying is really interesting because it's not been at full power. As a matter of fact as I type these lies, the power is being adjusted up to the highest level the old transmitters has had on it since February. Still has some room to up it more. Pat, if ya head up east, give a report. There's ice up at the site, so like a few other stations, it might power down a bit tonight and tomorrow. If it is ice free, it might reach to Gordonsville tomorrow. That's decent coverage considering.

That happened one day last week, as well. When Chris was finally able to come on, sometime between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m., he mentioned that a fuse had blown. (Seems like they have muchas problemas with transmitter issues, but I digress.) We happened to see a car coming out of their (transmitter site) driveway onto McCrory Lane that morning while it was still dark.

Personally, I actually LIKED it jockless that morning last week, because Chris insists on talking over every nanosecond of a song's intro (and then some!), talks before and after almost every song, says the same things over and over again, and even laughs at his own "jokes." At least his interviews (some of them, anyway) are pretty cool.

i agree he does laugh at his own jokes way too much..and they are not that humorous to begin with...now Tibbs..you say he is local ?? in studio in Nashville ?? thought he was off somewhere else..he does have a good voice..wish i had one that good..

Pat - tis true, he's local here. CMT Building next to Romer's Home Away from House. If I could figure out how to post a pic or two on here, I would. Chris also programs all the music, so he spends a ton of hours behind the scene. Just a real, wonderful VIP!

I used to listen to Spider back in the late 70s, and I will tell you guys, I was actually pretty nervous to meet him at first. But he is truly one of the absolute nicest and finest good guys, I have met. Down to earth and he has some great stories.

Anyone notice/think the signal has improved in the last few days?

Yes the signal appears to have gotten stronger..hence my first post..however on the way back into Nashville around 11:00 or so...It seems to be weaker as I can't pick it up as well as outbound around 5-5:30 am..and I was not dissing the guys..Spyder just seems to be an odd fit for the format as I'm sure he would better fit an urban type format better.....Just a bit envious of guys playing my favorite music for a living...and I'm delivering body parts.. :'(

I sort of agree with Pat, but every time I've listened to Spider's voice track, it sounds like he's "mailing it in." It's okay, I guess, but no real sense of a radio personality engaging his audience there. Just a guy reading liners. I'd rather hear Lucky laugh at himself give it a go at entertaining as opposed to the automated "song, sweeper, song, commercial, commercial, sweeper, song, etc." As for the signal, it still fades dramatically on Charlotte around Nashville West. I guess it is aiming higher and the lower area there is overshot.

I also listened to the Spiderman on 15WLAC back then. There's a lot to be said for being there live with the music vs. "mailing it in".

That was why I asked if anyone was local..and who the mid day gal was at the Rock...Laura may be VTing..but she sounds a lot more "in studio" than Spider..Glad to find out there is at least one live person over at the Hippie...guess that name's better than 'oldies"..but still not the best branding..I understand their idea on the name..but makes me think of one year and one place..1967 San Francisco..but much better than what was here before...now if they would just drop the 'all new' moniker..been here a long time..we get it.. ;)

I think Carpenter is over at Crumulus - maybe the market manager?

Speaking of Hippie, I heard Brian Woolard (?) over there on Sunday afternoon calling himself Jack Flash. He was one of those blown out at CC last year - he did morning traffic.

KrOnic - you be correct, "Jack Flash" is new to Hippie as of this week and will be doing AM and PM traffic. There will be some more pretty awesome news coming soon to some additional additions that will shock and awe Music City.

Cox used "new" for 97.1 on Atlanta for years. Has any one at this station ever worked for Cox?
Is there a jinx on the 97.1 frequency? "Come-in-last," when they owned 97.1 called it "new" when it was "the tower." Remember "the new 97.1 the tower" for a freakin' year and a half? ::) Of course, "the tower" was a bad enough name. ::) They also called it "new" when it was "Star 97," but at least it still was "new" then, at least for a while there.
