Ross on Radio had something in his column about songs that make up A/C radio playlists these days from artists like Pink, Coldplay and Fray. I asked the following:

What I want to know is what happened to all the 80's and early '90's A/C songs that I played working in A/C radio? Songs by:

Sade- Smooth Operator, Your Live is King, The Sweetest Taboo etc.
Simply Red - If you don't know me By Now, Holding Back the years.
Celine Dion - Too many to list!
Billy Joel - And So It Goes, Baby Grand, Allentown, I Go to Extrimes
Richard Marx - none of his hits get heard anymore.
Amy Grant
Anita Baker
Carly Simon
Carole King
Cars
Cathy Dennis - Too Many Walls
Gloria Estefan
Go West
Huey Lewis
Julian Lennon
Linda Ronstadt - Somewhere out there, Dreams to dream
Madonna (lots of her songs are missing)
Swing Out Sister
Taylor Dayne
Wilson Phillips

Most of these Songs and artists were big in the 80's and 90's yet the are completely ignored. Yet somehow stations never seem to stop playing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" "I'd Really Love to See You tonight" "Rocket Man" "My Life" and "Boogie Oggie Oggie". Songs that to me wore out their welcome a long time ago.

The missing songs and artists listed above can be heard on Sirius XM Love so there must be people who remember and enjoy them. Satellite radio isn't perfect but it's much better than the over researched formats on FM McRadio.

It's still cool if it's the long version, which 'KB used to play.

Mike, my gut says that sadly, the above list comprises what would make up a modern day MOR list. They are today's Teresa Brewers, Petula Clarks, Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass etc. Legitimate Top 40 hits that fall off the radar...some of them may even have a cool factor attached to them until it's widely perceived that they're Soft AC fodder.

That said...Sade, Anita Baker and Swing Out Sister should have a following at Smooth Jazz/NAC, except as we all know that format is being killed off nationwide.

Now, another hit I don't hear anymore: Evan & Jaron - "Crazy For This Girl".

When Top 40/Hot AC programmers figure out how to incorporate the "Glee" phenomenon, that'll be a good sign.

This crap ( ) NEVER gets past the "testing" stage (now does it?)

But everyone here...(yup, we're ALL programmers-- ???) seems to enjoy the non-mainstream stiffs (oops-stuff).

And I know every radio sales guru (excuse me - Revenue Partner)..can sell ice to the Eskimos....
