Hits That Never Get Played on Radio Any More

Branched off from the Stiffs thread per suggestion from one Sir Roxalot.

I'll start this one off with The Moments-Love On A Two Way Street.

Right On The Tip Of My Tongue - Brenda & The Tabulations
Want Ads - Honey Cone
Starting All Over Again - Mel & Tim
Its Getting Better - Mama Cass Elliot

Its Getting Better - Mama Cass Elliot

As Savage come out of hiding...he hits one (ok a line shot to right field...but a base hit anyway!!)
Under-rated tune..but good to hear on occasion

I could have copped the "seasonal thing" in view of this Sunday, and cited "Color Him Father" by the Winstons, but that would have just been "a dribble to the mound."

(Insert your own double entendre here)

How about scorpio by dennis coffey, nathan jones by the supremes, how do you do by mouth and macneil, beautiful sunday by daniel boone, devil woman by cliff richard, half breed by cher. i'll stop so i can let someone else add to this list! oh one more: cisco kid by war.

Let's not forget the follow-up: Make Your Own Kind Of Music.

Here's a chestnut from 1968: "I Love You" - The People

Nobody I Know (Could Love You More Than Me) - Peter and Gordon, another good British Invasion tune.

Ross on Radio had something in his column about songs that make up A/C radio playlists these days from artists like Pink, Coldplay and Fray. I asked the following:

What I want to know is what happened to all the 80's and early '90's A/C songs that I played working in A/C radio? Songs by:

Sade- Smooth Operator, Your Live is King, The Sweetest Taboo etc.
Simply Red - If you don't know me By Now, Holding Back the years.
Celine Dion - Too many to list!
Billy Joel - And So It Goes, Baby Grand, Allentown, I Go to Extrimes
Richard Marx - none of his hits get heard anymore.
Amy Grant
Anita Baker
Carly Simon
Carole King
Cars
Cathy Dennis - Too Many Walls
Gloria Estefan
Go West
Huey Lewis
Julian Lennon
Linda Ronstadt - Somewhere out there, Dreams to dream
Madonna (lots of her songs are missing)
Swing Out Sister
Taylor Dayne
Wilson Phillips

Most of these Songs and artists were big in the 80's and 90's yet the are completely ignored. Yet somehow stations never seem to stop playing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" "I'd Really Love to See You tonight" "Rocket Man" "My Life" and "Boogie Oggie Oggie". Songs that to me wore out their welcome a long time ago.

The missing songs and artists listed above can be heard on Sirius XM Love so there must be people who remember and enjoy them. Satellite radio isn't perfect but it's much better than the over researched formats on FM McRadio.

So.....?

->Pulls Glock 9mm from holster and puts five rounds into the radio.

It's still cool if it's the long version, which 'KB used to play.

Mike, my gut says that sadly, the above list comprises what would make up a modern day MOR list. They are today's Teresa Brewers, Petula Clarks, Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass etc. Legitimate Top 40 hits that fall off the radar...some of them may even have a cool factor attached to them until it's widely perceived that they're Soft AC fodder.

That said...Sade, Anita Baker and Swing Out Sister should have a following at Smooth Jazz/NAC, except as we all know that format is being killed off nationwide.

Now, another hit I don't hear anymore: Evan & Jaron - "Crazy For This Girl".

You'd think after it was used to such great effect on "Lost" some smart programmer would have started playing it again.

Oh wait, there are no smart programmers any more...

When Top 40/Hot AC programmers figure out how to incorporate the "Glee" phenomenon, that'll be a good sign.

And while we're dealing with ABC/Dunhill Records ("Believe it!") I offer up these gems:

Grass Roots - Bella Linda, Sooner Or Later, Two Divided By Love, The Runway
Three Dog Night - One Man Band, Liar, Pieces Of April, Let Me Serenade You
Cashman & West - American City Suite

There's quite few in the previous list that I play here on 1620 W-Nuthin-Nuthin-Nuthin.

I'll add "Underwater" by the Frogmen, and

" Java" by Al Hirt

Son of a Bit##!!! What we have here is the makin's of a "Brand New Radio Station"

This crap ( ;)) NEVER gets past the "testing" stage (now does it?)

But everyone here...(yup, we're ALL programmers-- ???) seems to enjoy the non-mainstream stiffs (oops-stuff).

And I know every radio sales guru (excuse me - Revenue Partner)..can sell ice to the Eskimos....

so what do you think?

That's all

HDBG

BTW- feel free to start a thread on this one...to keep the boards neat & orderly ;D)
