Speaking of The Sweet, what about Little Willy?

I figured someone, somewhere had to be playing it...our Hot AC still has "Ballroom Blitz" in its library.

The Sweet...Hot AC...we're gettin' old.

I'll complete the Sweet "four-pack" with "Love Is Like Oxygen". :)

Love Is Like Oxygen still gets some play (lunar rotation) at classic hits AOR stations.

Here's one we used to play at KB that probably hasn't been heard much since then:

Timmy Thomas-Why Can't We Live Together (diamonds in the back...of the Cadillac...)

And one that should never have been heard to begin with: Clint Homes-Playground in My Mind

Oh great, first I get pulled over by the "Stiffs police" for listing a "non-stiff" and now DB has me in his sights for a song that DOES get played. ;D Ok, when was the last time "Run Joey Run" was played on the radio? ;) I'm NOT requesting it, just asking...

And, John C, your sig jogged my memory....how about The Fantastic Johnny C's "Boogaloo Down Broadway (Funky Broadway) ??

I recall Greaseman @ WAXC talking up the intro of "Why Can't We Live Together" (Wasn't it about 1:19?)

"Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac, Diamond in the back, sunroof top, Diggin' the scene With a gangsta lean". It was "Be Thankful for What You've Got" by William DeVaughn.

Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together" had that minute and a half Hammond B-3 intro and not many other instruments throughout as I recall.

Oh yeah, Mr. Savage - I remember hearing the Greaseman on WAXC talking up "Shaft", "Stairway to Heaven" and a couple of long intro Temptation records regularly, too.

I'm going AOR here.

I saw someone mention Tower of Power earlier...I enjoyed "What IS Hip" and "Don't Change Horses." I saw them do a couple of great shows at The Tralf.

You won't hear anything anymore from Clapton's 1989 release "Journeyman." e.g. "Pretending" "Bad Love" "No Alibis"

When was the last time you heard anything on classic rock radio from Blind Faith or Little Feat.

Traffic from "John Barleycorn Must Die." The two biggies were "Glad" and "Empty Pages" which was on the jukebox at Shanes Log Cabin at Main and Summer.

Remember how big "Valerie" was by Steve Winwood back in the early 80's?

...and before I get a nap...any early Elton John, particularly from Tumbleweed Connection.

"Run Joey Run" - A Top 10 hit...peaked at #4...and then disappeared until resurrected by "Glee" a couple months ago. A real hoot. Did anyone play that one as a recurrent?

DB...you were music director at 'KB when "Playground" was out. Are you saying that one was Jeff Kaye's idea? :) Had to ask...that song made me feel a little creepy when it was a current.

Mendocino - Sir Douglas Quintet

This one can't be played now... "Teenybopper....My teenage lover..... etc."

Your're Sixteen - Ringo Starr

Same problem.

I Can't Control Myself - Troggs

Same problem.

I Think We're Alone Now - Tommy James and the Shondells

Same problem.

There could be a whole thread on songs now that are now politically uncorrect.

Yeah, it was Jeff's idea. That's it. Blame it on the guy who doesn't read this board. That's the ticket. ;D

"It was a more innocent time. Clint Holmes was a local guy. I swear I never touched anybody - or myself."

"He was quiet. Kept mostly to himself. Nobody ever dreamed he was capable of having a number one hit record, Officer."

"She Was Only Sixteen" - Sam Cooke

b/w "But She Looked Eighteen If She Looked A Day Old" - #59662A, Honor Farm, Dannemora :p

(THAT will teach you to answer the request phone after you've had that 6-pack of Rheingold)

LOL!!

Now how 'bout The Guess Who - "Share The Land"?

Aw heck, Share The Land gets played all the time. We know all about the brothers and sisters who care about what's gonna happen to us in a year from now, when we are all gonna finally be happy in just one more year on Baker Street. We know their names, we know their games, we don't lose track, etc. etc.

My question is whether The Guess Who ever did anything that was not an insult, or did they ever do anything that was upbeat?

But the thread is about hits that never get played on the radio anymore. We know The Guess Who gets plenty of air play.

How about something bright and simple, Dandelion - The Rolling Stones

Let's see....how about "Afternoon Delight" - Starland Vocal Band.

How about anything at all by John Denver. Remember how huge he was in both country and AC? I recall seeing him in a concert at the Aud about the time "Back Home Again" was out.

How about "Summer Wind" by Frank Sinatra. I remember hearing even the "Wild Child" playing that one. In fact, there are 4 Sinatra songs that I consider to be hits from our "fifty-somethings" era: "Summer Wind," "It Was a Very Good Year," "My Way," and "That's Life."

BTW - in the mid-60's, Frankie, although not a Top 40 regular, was still pretty much mainstream. His album "September of My Years" won a Grammy for Album of the Year in '65."

The Guess Who's first hit was the last for them as "Chad Allen and the Expressions" - Shakin' All Over.
My 45 lists the Guess Who. But on the album, both group names are shown, IIRC.
Seems like it was 1965. Definitely upbeat and driving. Don't hear it get played much anymore, as it's too "strong" for modern tastes.

Amazing, just had that Guess Who tune on, "turned up to 11" yesterday. With its cascading guitar intro and Jerry Lee Lewis piano underlay, "Shakin' All Over" is one of those great 60s style-garage band songs which recalls earlier works by the Who, "Substitute;" and the Kinks, "All Day and All of the Night" and "You Really Got Me." In other Can-I-Get-A-Witness-News, I'll add Eric Clapton's "The Core" to this thread.

Guess I gotta get out of the house more, Silkie.

Seems like anytime I hear oldies radio or classic rock - which isn't that often - their entire Guess Who repertoire is "These Eyes" and "American Woman". Although I heard a local small-market oldies station playing "Undun". The high school flashbacks from that one are a little strong. Still.

And since you brought up Gerry Rafferty, let me add in "Baker Street"'s follow-up: "Right Down The Line". Long version only, of course.

Speaking of long versions, is it just Buffalo where it seems that everybody played the long version of songs? As I recall, even the AM powerhouses played a lot of long versions instead of radio edits.

Case in point? "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"? When I hear the edit on WHTT, it seems so incomplete that it really annoys me. Ditto "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann. I seem to recall 3 versions of that one - short, medium, and long.

I remember once in Dallas getting a call from someone complaining that the 4 plus minute version of In a gadda da Vidda was incomplete. He said, "You wouldn't play a short version of "Freebird" would ya?"

Another comes to mind..."I'm a Man" by Chicago.

There might also have been a short version of "Light My Fire."

Why is there only 1 version of "Slow Ride?"

(Hey Jimmy P - "The Core"...Nice. That's when I fell in love with Motown's Marcella "Marcy" Levy.)

Funny you should mention this one (well, maybe funny). Back in the day, I did a "personal" studio edit used on-air. NOWHERE else would you hear that version. It was a combo of the "shortie" breaker version, and the true length version. I had the jocks cross eyed for awhile (mostly from getting caught in the rest room), but they got used to it. IIRC it was 4:58 cold. If that old Audiopac is collecting dust somewhere...

HDBG

BTW - I also had fun with Beginnings (Cheecago), and Do It Again (Steely) ;D

I don't remember 3 "Blinded By The Light"s...doesn't mean there weren't. I recall only the 3:48 single and 7:00 album version. I do remember 3 "Abracadabra"s...I think there was a 4:35 long edit.
Also there were 3 "I Ran"s. The 3:58 version is the original U.S. album cut.

TMagoo - There was a short version of "Slow Ride"...about 3:50 or so.

SirRox: 13Q/Pittsburgh played mostly long versions - in all dayparts - Jackie Blue, Miracles, Roundabout, all the Eagles hits, Listen To The Music, Hot Child In The City, to name just a few...oddly, I think they played the studio single of "Rock & Roll All Nite" instead of the live cut. Also the single of "The Boys Are Back In Town". Don't think I heard the album version of "Suite:Judy Blue Eyes" on a Top 40 until WNBC when Bob Pittman was programming it and positioned them as "playing the long versions of the songs"...although I'd caught them throwing in a single in here and there...once right after the "we play the long versions" sweeper.

WRKO/Boston had a brief policy of editing everything down to 3:00...WABC/NYC usually played the short versions except for some obvious classic oldies (Light My Fire)...WCFL/Chicago and CKLW/Windsor-Detroit must've been on a case-by-case basis.

Many years later when I worked as a Country MD under WGR alumnus Larry Anderson in Wheeling, WV, playing the album versions was SOP. Only if the single was a better mix would we go that route. That was 20 years ago...seems no one in Top 40 or Country cares to play album versions anymore. We have a few at my current station...but only a few.

HDBG - I remain proud to this day of my 6:02 "Purple Rain" and 4:38 edit of the Blaster Mix of "Dancing In The Dark"...done back when both were currents at OK100/Cortland-Ithaca.
