Ho-Ho-Ho Propels KEZ to #1

I know what you mean. That is what I liked about earlier alternative music/stations. There was more of a connection with dance music then. Even into the 90's, bands like Eon (Spice) and The Shamen were getting good airplay on alternative stations.

Yup. Remember KUKQ? They played Thrill Kill Kult, Real Life, Shamen, Cure, EMF, Jesus Jones and so on. The Edge somewhat resembled them at 1st by including Soup Dragons, Happy Mondays, Blur, Pet Shop Boys. Now its all considered "weak" by the new fans of so called Alternative crap. They all been brainwashed by stuff like Korn and Rage.

I do, barely (KUKQ)...I moved to AZ in late '92. It's sad that some new fans consider that stuff weak. Actually, I am glad I grew up when I did. Since I am so passionate about music (and was more so when I was younger), I cannot imagine how bored I would be if I was 20 now.

That is my problem with the station. I get that these are core artists but they still only play the same 2-5 songs from each of these bands. Play a few lesser known cuts and forgotten tracks. When is the last time you heard Big Me from the Foo Fighters on that station? If they want to play just the hits there are still plenty they aren't playing from those and other bands. I like most of the new music but they don't play enough currents and when they do, they spin them for a few months and then there done with them forever. To me the imaging is lacking the creativity that the old edge had (especially when it was on 106.3) and the jocks are not bad but they don't really add anything either. They station just seems to lack energy to me.

The alternative format is not doing as well as it used to even in many of the format's hotspots (L.A., San Diego, Seattle - but those markets have some competition from other commercial and/or college stations). The format should be doing better than what it is here, we're just stuck with a station that has morphed so many times in the past ten years that it's beyond repair.

The bigger question is how to fix 103.9 when they can't save their current format? A temporary fix until they get a good game plan would be to turn over the playlist to Dave Pratt and play anything he wants - kind of like a "Peak" for men. However, the ultimate say will be in the hands of Mr. Burkle and Mr. Cutchall.

This board never ceases to amaze me. Somebody writes something nice about a station and the automatically work there. LOL. People even investigate! What time did he sign up? Where else did he post? WHO COULD HE BE!!!!!?????? WE NEED TO KNOW!!!

OK DJ Perry! Maybe I work at another station and don’t want anyone to know who I am, as it’s apparently taboo to say anything good about KMVA or KKFR. Or, maybe I do work there, and I’m proud of the HARD WORK some people put in with less than others. Or maybe I work at KZON and I’m seeing how hard some of my competitors are working? Maybe I work at Kiss…oh wait, nobody works there. Maybe I’m a grumpy old lady doing overnights in Vegas.

As far as your comment about being “proud of their less than 2 share”, you are only showing your ignorance. Advertisers buy demos like 18-49, 25-54 and 18-34 (shouldn’t you be teaching the kids this stuff?). In those cells they are doing fine, even beating south mountain sticks. But I guess you can’t see that over at KVIT can ya? By-the-way; when you have some non-coms and KVIT listed on your resume on the left side, I’d be careful of throwing stones about the sound and presentation of the commercial stations… but what do I know? You know what they say: “those who can’t do, teach.” Enjoy your mix show.

But wait! All of those commercial stations also care about satisfying the listeners, right? 8) I understand it is a business. Only a business unfortunately at the end of the day. I'd rather be listening to a mixshow.

I do enjoy it. And I am not a teacher there, I am a former student and it is just one of the many shows I do, including national mixes. Regardless, it sounds like I struck a nerve, which only supports my assumption. My only point was that you guys are under ALL the stations that share your format. But perhaps sales is kickin serious butt and keepin the staff employed....not really sure though, my ignorance only assumes.

Sounds like you're describing KWSS-LP. They're light years ahead of 103.9, with a significant amount of local tracks in regular rotation. Nearly every song I heard on KUKQ, whether it was 'People Who Died' or 'Mexican Radio' or The Jetzons (the band, not the cartoon) has eventually made it over to KWSS-LP.

From 3.9 to 8.8, and most of the December ratings come from November! Once again, KFWhyEye on Ancient Modulation bests KTR-FM...but non-comm talker KJZZ beats both of them. A lump of coal for the Goldminers at Lumberyard 14~Forty. Here's more http://www.radio-info.com/markets/phoenix

Every time I heard KTAR's afternoon hosts playing "Fact or Fiction," or the even train-wreck'ier "Family Feud" amongst themselves - um, guys, are you ever gonna let listeners play, too? - I think to myself how silly it would be if KJZZ had the puzzle guy quizzing Weekend Edition co-hosts and producers for *their* answers. That's how silly it sounds. PHOENIX MUST BE THE ONLY MARKET IN THE U.S. WITH ONLY ONE TALK RADIO STATION THAT TAKES LISTENER CALLS - AND ONE THAT DOESN'T. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if KNST or KFNX gets better numbers some day.

Sounds awesome. Where is it from? Do they play the Nails or Front 242?

Sure they do. They even play Cocteau Twins. You can check out their daily playlist here:

Four pages on this topic and not much on the merits of KEZ. I thought that would be the focus of this thread. Oh well...

...And this is why I always avoid using subject liners that restrict me to one particular subject! I'm someone that values (legal & sensible) freedom, and I love giving myself the freedom to discuss other things in addition to the main topic at hand, rather than making one post subject that is restricted primarily to one thing then having to make a bunch of other posts every time something new comes up or comes to mind within a short period of time!

I also find it funny when there are certain sections with duplicate posts about the exact same topic - WITH nearly identical subject line headers! That's like... well, having two or three hit music stations playing hit music and using the slogan "hit music.."!  ;D

You forgot to mention the equally insipid "Alphabet" or "Super Freak" features of the Chuck 'n Chick show on KT'R. Two hosts guffawing at each others inane comments. Want to participate? Well, go to their Facebook page as taking live and local calls aint part of the format  Guess TMISU aren't aware that their web page proclaims "KT'R - Where the Valley Talks". Hmmmmmm.

But back to the topic - yes indeedy, Nurse Jeff and I knew KEZ would get a bump from their annual All Ho-Ho-Ho format, but nothing like this. Pretty darned impressive...especially when you consider there's only one week of December in the December ratings

"Where our hosts talk amongst themselves - and, hey, Jamie just got another text message from a Bonneville employee down the hall." It's pretty sad when a TALK RADIO station decides taking listener calls is passe. Why is it ok for syndicated shows to take calls but not local shows? That makes no sense. Are they scaredy-cat of what the callers might say? Do they have orders from legal not to take listener calls anymore? I can only image what all the tourists in town this weekend for the bowl games must think when they tune their dials to KTAR compared to KFYI. One's a legit "talk radio" station, the other's a pale imitation. Talk radio without listener calls is like pizza without the cheese and pepperoni.

Oh Wow this is that local station from Scottsdale right? I never caught it before. Some cool stuff in there, yet many unknown titles too. Can they be picked up?

I can pick up KWSS here on the west/nw side...here is the playlist for X (they're having a no-repeat weekend = 1,039 songs in a row, no repeat) - http://tunein.com/radio/X1039-s32429/
