It's usually a sales/revenue gimmick. And as far as they go, THIS one DOES work.
Holiday formatted stations usually do get a nice ratings boost during their run. But there will always be somebody wanting to milk every potential drop of it. Just so the end of the year always look REALLY nice on the balance sheets. It's a BIG time for ad revenue (funny thing is I haven't heard a single spot on WEZW in the two hours I checked them out.)
Only problem with starting out THIS early, well....
Let's face it. It's hard to be excited about Christmas when you haven't even carved your Halloween pumpkin yet.
But then again, they're breaking out all the Christmas merchandise in department stores. And I'm already seeing cartons of egg nog on the grocer's shelves.
I'm guessing they're trying to time themselves accordingly. But seriously, the holiday radio/TV ad rush doesn't officially start until just before Thanksgiving. To start anytime before November 1st at the EARLIEST doesn't seem to me like the smartest strategy. But then again, for some stations, it could pay off.
Either way, we'll see.......
