Holy Moly! CBS enters the Miami Market

Wow. The changes are going wild down here. JVC of New York builds a cluster in WPB.

You get a new LPFM with Shake 108.

Now Beasley acquires 14 stations from CBS, and Beasley turns over five stations, including their three Miami properties -- Sports 560 WQAM, Power 96 WPOW-FM, and Country 99.9 Kiss Country WKIS.

WOW. So that leaves Beasley with their Boca cluster in the area with just WWNN 1470, WSHR 980 and 740 WSBR in Boca. I didn't see this change coming . . .

That's the final nail in the coffin for WPOW. Have you seen the things CBS is doing leading up to a complete exit from radio? Deeply disturbing. And now they own a station that has never managed to recover from their self-inflicted fall from the glory days of the 90's. This cannot end well. Same for 'QAM... heck, even moreso for 'QAM! A heritage sports station with no local professional team broadcast rights and ratings so low that two Christian non-coms out of West Palm are beating them in the Miami market! If CBS is already destroying the stations that do well, just imagine what'll happen to 560! And what about Kiss? A heritage country station that does moderately well in a market that is anything but country-centric. Do they come out of this alive, themselves?

I'm not seeing a whole lot positive about this... except for Beasley, who now makes more money off of fourteen stations in smaller markets than they did with five stations in larger ones. Power won't even see it's 30th anniversary.

Power is in what is essentially a tie for second place in billings in Miami. It is highly unlikely that they would change that.

How is adding stations in two larger markets in exchange for stations in smaller ones an "exit". It's simply focusing on the larger markets and exiting the smaller ones.

That's about the most published story in the trade media.


And that does not change the fact that Power is among Miami's top billers and is a key buy in their demo.
 
Oh, yes, let's trust the trade media's narrative, that's never left any information out. By the way you phrased that, I take it that you know full well what I'm talking about. Power being a top biller isn't going to change what's coming.
 
Sorry Guys for repeating this from the other board: You are all being fooled. They used too be live and local and cared about that!!! Now that Moonves took over they have destroyed all of there stations!! I SHOULD KNOW!! I USED TO WORK FOR CBS!! NOW I AM ON THE UNEMPLYMENT LINE AS WELL AS MOST OF MY CO- WORKERS!! WIRK 107.9 WAS ALL LIVE AND LOCAL MOONVES TOOK OVER AND THEY VOICE TRACKED 7PM-12MID AND 12 MID-6AM!! Sunny 104.3 VOICED TRACKED 8PM-6AM! ll they are is another cheap channel. I feel sorry for WQAM. MAYBE MAYBE they won't mess with it due to the fact all of there Sports outlets are live and local. But I don't trust them one bit.

Sorry to hear that, T.J. That's exactly what I'm talking about. This is what's going to happen at WQAM, WPOW and WKIS. If you think otherwise, you're either not paying attention or in denial.

WOAH! WOAH! WOAH! DON'T SAY WPOW WILL GO DEAD AGAIN ! :mad: FOR THE 2nd time, WE DON'T WANT THE SAME THING TO HAPPEN TO THEM AGAIN when they were WMJX. I mean sign-off the air and bring back it's license to the FCC. And besides, WQAM is the first station in Florida, EVER!! Well, WDAE was the first in 1250 AM, but there was some dispute on who is the first broadcaster in Florida EVER. We don't want the first FL station "EVER" to go off the air FOR"EVER"! Maybe these stations could be proven useful as WQAM could be CBS Sports Radio and could yank some teams out of WINZ, like the Dolphins. At least they have University of Miami. How about FIU can go to WQAM, because they only have a Spanish Simulcast and SERIOUSLY needs an English Radio Simulcast. WQAM could have UM, FIU, and the Dolphins, while WINZ will stick with the Marlins, and Lincoln's WAXY-AM-FM could keep the Heat. Instead Power 96 can do a vote off, on whether to stay as Power 96 or switch it's name to "96.5 AMP RADIO" to compete with newcomer WFLC "Hits 97.3" and heritage WHYI "Y100" and WQAM can be on the same page with WPOW and have a vote-off for South Floridians to vote on whether 560 would remain as "WQAM" or should turn into "CBS SPORTS RADIO 560" I don't think they should return their license to the FCC. :)
 
CBS is not a fan of the CHR/Rhythmic format, and despite an over-saturation of CHR and Adult CHR stations in the Miami market, I can see Power becoming another "Amp Radio."

I can't believe all the complaining about voice-tracking. Look at what Clear Channel does at WMIA and Y-100. CBS is the most committed of all of the big players to live and local radio.

I'm enjoying the ideas of changes that may or may not come. On the other board someone suggested that Kiss would get blown out for WQAM-FM. And I think it was on this board, and the other someone mentioned that all of CBS's sports stations are live-and-local, so likely, QAM sports wouldn't flip. I find that an interesting take. Of course, someone mentioned, and I agree . . .that would leave Miami without a country station. Which leaves to thinking . . .

93.5 The Bull on W228BV, at 179 watts. I've been listening and its solid, good station. So, let's say that Kiss blows out and we get WQAM 99.9 Sports, and without a country station . . . would clear channel blow up WMIB 103.5 The Beat, and it becomes 103.5 The Bull. It could happen. You have to admit that 103.5 has gone through a lot of flips trying to find itself. The She-Plays-Everything (which I enjoyed) didn't work . . . so, what'll think?

What does CBS do with their AM's besides sports? I never really dug deep into CBS to see how they program AMs. A solid All News Talk would be nice. I know they do that format justice. But Yikes. They don't mess with brokering, do they? Gosh, I hope not. Man, that is the last thing we need down here, pay to play airtime jocks pitching more snake oils.

Do we have room for two Sports AMs battling it out. Would be interesting WQAM 99.9 FM Sports vs. 104.3 The Ticket.

But I agree with David on Power 96, concerning its billing/ratings. I don't see that going anywhere . . . I believe it'll stay. But someone mentioned a tweak to the AMP format CBS has, so that's not to far off base, drastic in terms of format change.

All very interesting stuff.

I know this is off topic. But I wonder how much longer 104.3 The Ticket will remain on 790. I wonder if LFM has any plans to break off 790 with its own unique format. Maybe 790 ESPN? We don't have an ESPN outlet in Miami . . . and ESPN has always had fan base. And didn't 640, wasn't that an ESPN affilate at one time. So 790 going that way is possible to fill a void? The only other ESPN station is 106.3 up in Palm Beach which doesn't reach down here . . . Just a though in passing.

Very doubtful. CBS is very heavily invested in the country format, and has demonstrated its willingness to stick with the format even when it's not getting top ratings. Why? Because country draws great sales demos, and they love to cross-promote with country events on CBS TV.
 
Question for DavidEduardo. Billings might be good for Power, but don't you think that a company like CBS will modify their CHR Rhythmic format by removing the staff and music to a more conventional format that goes away from being the Unique CHRURBAN that we have enjoyed for the most part of 30 years? Your response.

The business of radio is making money. If WPOW bills well and has good margins, why would they not keep it?

In fact, when Power owns a niche it makes no sense to get into the middle of the Cox-IHR battle.

They have Churban WPGC in Waashington, and Urban WVEE in Atlanta as well as two urbans (which they are selling) in Charlotte. They have rhythmic CHRs in Sacramento and Orlando, too. Obviously, they have nothing against urban stations or ones that play hip hop.

CBS is the most significant operator of all news stations, such as WINS and WCBS (AM) in NYC, WBBM in Chicago, KCBS in San Francisco, KNX in LA and KRLD in Dallas, KYW in Philadelphia and WWJ in Detroit. They also have a number of big news talk stations such as KDKA, WBZ, KMOX, and WTIC and quite a few sports stations.

Miami is generally thought to be outside the market size where all news can succeed.

But I agree with David on Power 96, concerning its billing/ratings. I don't see that going anywhere . . . I believe it'll stay. But someone mentioned a tweak to the AMP format CBS has, so that's not to far off base, drastic in terms of format change.

Amp is not a format, it is a brand. None of the Amp stations plays identical music... just like IHR's "Kiss" brand ranges from Urban to mainstream CHR to Hot AC. Finding a brand that can be "owned" by a company is very difficult today so when a company has one, it uses it all over the place.
