Holy Moly! CBS enters the Miami Market

Correction, I meant to say Hispanic-oriented or HURBAN, not to be confused with the Hurban model that IHeartMedia uses for a station like Mega 94.9.

Mega is a pretty mainstream Spanish language CHR with a touch or rhythmic songs in English. BDS classifies it as Latin Pop.

WPOW is classified as Rhythmic CHR.

I have not seen the "Hurban" term used for quite a few years.

The sale is a good thing. Don't see any changes on Power 96, and the other stations will probably get more attention, and promotion (since CBS has more marketing (and probably promotional) avenues
).

FORGET HITS 97.3! Time for Power 96 to change to 96.5 AMP RADIO to compete with Y100! :)

Props to JayR for posting this link on another thread. I missed this article from 10/28. Good catch,

Wheels turning on the Beasley CBS swap. In brief: The FTC and DEPT. OF JUSTICE have cleared the way for the BEASLEY-CBS RADIO swaps in PHILADELPHIA, MIAMI, TAMPA and CHARLOTTE, with the FTC on FRIDAY issuing early termination notices of its anti-trust inquiries in the swaps between the GEORGE BEASLEY Estate Reduction Trust and CBS CORPORATION Chairman SUMNER REDSTONE . . . .

As I have asked before: Why would Power 96 which is #3 in billings, and only a few hundred thousand behind the #2 station (Number 1 is perennial top biller WAMR) want to change name? And why would they want to compete more directly with Y-100 if they already tie Y-100 on average in 18-34?

Oh...right. But when Power/Amp 96.5 comes to CBS and becomes sisters with WFOR and WBFS, that will make Denver the only CBS market with only TV stations. WRONG! Not only the trade will make Denver the only CBS market with only TV stations, but Tampa will also have only 1 TV station left and be like Denver. Denver only has KCNC and Tampa will soon only have WTOG.

As Scott Burns pointed out: CBS is not a fan of the CHR/Rhythmic format, and despite an over-saturation of CHR and Adult CHR stations in the Miami market, I can see Power becoming another "Amp Radio."

If CBS wasn't going to Amp it up, and if WPOW is doing so great in the ratings and in billings, why is Pio Ferro leaving the station? I think he would stay on and Power would stay the same.

Because CBS isn't a fan of the CHR Rythmic Format, and its going to become Amp Radio.

Very interesting insight from the latest LANCE'S LINE on Radio Insight at http://radioinsight.com/blog/blogs/90324/examining-the-cbsbeasley-deal/ that should open up a lively discussion on here. What are your thoughts on Lance's insights about Lincoln Financial Media being a "swapping candidate." Its no secret that LFM has been wanting to get out of radio . . . .

What’s Next For CBS

Just a couple weeks ago CBS CEO Les Moonves stated his plans to drop around 40 stations from CBS’ holdings. After this deal with Beasley there will still be at least 25 more stations to divest.

Are there other potential swapping candidates for CBS? One sticks out like a sore thumb. Lincoln Financial Media’s four markets are now ones where CBS operates in some form. Lincoln has two stations in Atlanta where CBS has three. Lincoln has five stations in Denver where CBS has only a TV station. Lincoln has 1 AM and 3 FMs in Miami. And in San Diego, Lincoln has 4 FMs (One a suburban fill-in) and CBS has 2. It should also be noted that in August Lincoln Financial Media agreed to transfer the FM rights to Atlanta Falcons football games from their “Star 94” WSTR to CBS’s “92.9 The Game” WZGC.

The websites are now under the "CBS Local" brand.

Yep. And Jay, did you notice, there are no menus for "hosts" or pages for the hosts anymore? Is on air change coming to WQAM? Seems so . . .

From Radio Insight’s October 1st News, it looks like Scott Ferrall, the one time mid-day host on 560 WQAM, signs with CBS.

He’s going to be on the air in the 10 PM to 2 AM slot when the “new network debuts” on January 2nd. As said, considering that new all new, revamped 560 WQAM website has no menu’s or pages for the QAM’s host that worked under Beasley. Is more on air change coming???

Ya Bet ya. Read the last line of the Radio Insight article: 560 WQAM will clear his show on the networks launch.

So, WQAM is remaining a sports outlet. Speculations solved!!

From the link:
CBS Sports Radio has announced that Scott Ferrall’s “Ferrall On The Bench” will air in the 10pm to 2am timeslot when the network debuts on January 2.
Ferrall joins the network from SiriusXM where he hosts a nightly show on Howard Stern’s “Howard 101“. He was previously syndicated in the mid 90’s to many of the stations that now make up CBS’ Sports properties including WFAN New York and WIP-FM Philadelphia (then WYSP). Ferrall also spent time as morning host at CBS’ 102.7 WNEW New York and Lincoln Financial Media’s 560 WQAM Miami.
CBS Sports Radio has also announced the following stations will clear Ferrall’s program at launch. Cumulus’ 1050 KTCT San Francisco, 1310 KTCK Dallas,680 WCNN Atlanta, CBS’ 106.7 WJFK Washington, 610 WIP Philadelphia, 610 KILT Houston, 1270 WXYT Detroit, 1300 WJZ Baltimore, 610 WFNZ/1660 WBCN Charlotte, and Beasley Broadcasting’s 560 WQAM Miami.

You can read the full CBS Sports Radio Schedule here, but for the moment, it seems on Ferrall's cleared for Miami. I don't see info about the other hosts being on the air down here, yet.

The CBS Sports Radio lineup as of now looks like this:
6am to 9am – To Be Announced
9am to 12pm – John Feinstein
12pm to 3pm – Jim Rome
3pm to 6pm – Doug Gottlieb
6pm to 10pm – To Be Announced
10pm to 2am – Ferrall On The Bench
2am to 6am – To Be Announced

Notice Jim Rome? Looks like 640 WMEN/FTL is going to be searching for a new 12 to 3 program.

I see WQAM becoming "CBS Sports Radio 560."

By the way: Scott Ferrall's show has been airing on WQAM for more than a year now.

WMEN "640 Sports" can simply tap in to NBC Sports Radio to fill the noon to 3 timeslot with "Voices of the Game" with Newy Scruggs.
