Honesty check: are people rooting for The Fan to fail?

It seems like that's the tone of many on this board. I'm not saying they don't have problems. However, it almost seems like people want this station to go away. I find it ironic, a live and local in all critical and not so critical day parts station is not liked while everyone laments...
not having live and local radio!

And no, I don't work for CBS. Lol!

Live and local does not necessarily mean better. Junk is junk.

When you first come on the air, you have one chance to make that first impression. When I first turned The Fan on I hear the show host say "I don't pay much attention to the Penguins. Never really been to a game." I turned it off instantly at that point. Before that, I heard a sports update that butchered so many facts and names it was comical.

They are programming a niche format on arguably the best signal in the market. It's a waste to continue to do this. I was not really a fan of the last version of B94. Kiss was/is sounding better, musically and personality wise outside of Seacrest.

I think the Fan plays the scapegoat here as to everything wrong with Pittsburgh radio as we know it. Look at everything that has happned recently. We lose a heritage urban station to a group that programs silent meditation on the radio (?!?). We lose a heritage CHR for the second time to a format already available on two underperforming AMs and already on two major FM signals part-time. We also lose a locally programmed and owned country station replaced by a K-Love repeater. Yes I am fully aware of 104.3, 103.5, etc. None of those give the coverage Froggy needs. Yes, I am aware two of these format changes were business decisions. All three of these are reasons to subscribe to XM and forget about local radio altogether.

I honestly and sincerely don't care one way or the other.

I'm with Talk Dude. I almost never listen to them, so it really doesn't matter to me either way.
I suppose they do deserve some credit for being live and local throughout the entire day (does
anybody call at 3AM who is not an employee?)

I hope they succeed. I only listen to Oldies and Sports Talk, so anything that supplants the mewling cacophony that passes for current music is fine by me.

(I think my parents must have said much the same, back in the 60s.) :)

Count me in as another one that would like to see this station succeed. I aggree with with you ohio radio man, seems like the regular posters here want this station to fail and fail in a hurry! Yes, it has some "warts" but some of the hosts are starting to grow on me. I commute up near the Youngstown airport everyday and it has been nice to be able to hear "local" sports talk anytime of the day.

I also want to see The Fan succeed. Vinni and Cook are very entertaining, I really enjo some of Vinni's serious analisys of the Pirates . I'm glad they have shaken up the morning show, although Alexander still rubs me the wrong way. Why not Ellis in morning drive! ( Just my opinion)

I am a sports junkie and nothing they do resonates with me. I wish it did, and I've given the place more than one chance realizing that sometimes launching a venture like this isn't a smooth deal even with the right people in place.

Its a great idea and the perfect signal for it. Trouble is the execution makes the Pirates look like World Series contenders.

Can't say as I have a vested interest in it one way or the other, but I have taken a liking to Vinnie, and to a lesser extent the morning show, though for my money I would have went with Burton over Alexander in that slot. At times it seems like the text messages, while a nice technological feature to have access to, end up being more of a crutch to fall back on then really adding anything to most of the shows content. If they are funny or poignant then by all means share, but don't read them just because someone sent you one. If I want non stop reading I can always look up Book TV on cable.

Weekends seem a little to hodge podgish for me also. I realize they are a work in progress, and surely pre and post game shows of the Panthers and Steelers will be occupying a significant portion of that time in the future, but I wouldn't mind them going for more niche programming in the other available times on Saturday and Sunday, maybe a golf show for an hour or two, a fantasy sports show, a racing show, etc. Just something that you know at a certain time you could tune in and have an idea of what to expect rather than what has been happening which sounds like any old warm body that can sit behind the mike and is available will do.

First of all, I would like to see every Pittsburgh market station survive and thrive.
Second, I would like to see every live and local voice on each station survive and thrive.
Ergo, even though I don't listen all that much to sports talk, regardless of the station, I honestly do not want KDKA-FM to fail.

I'm an old guy so what I think dosn't matter, but my son, age 25, is the demo that does matter and he has found "the fan" mostly booring. he says they "put to many callers on the air and not enough sports writers and reporters". on the way to work he says he mostly listens to "Mike and MIke" and on the way home he listens to either "the Drive" on espn1250 or Madden on the X. He also tells me the jingles on "the fan" drive him "up the wall". if 93.7 can't reach a 25 year old male died in the wool sports fan (he is 2 fantasy f-ball leagues AND a fanasy baseball league at the same time) they arn't doing things quite right.

I hope the Fan succeeds big time. I'm stuck in a college market in Tennessee, and I don't get to hear a lot of Pittsburgh sports talk. It's nice to be able to tap in online at work or home at any time and hear Pittsburgh sports talk, even if the quality isn't the best all the time. (Side note to the morning show - please, PLEASE get rid of that old lady who you have calling in around 8:45 a.m.!) I still like the local content on ESPN & Fox Sports radio, but in most cases I don't want to hear the national programming, which I can listen to here if I want (sometimes, that is - our ESPN radio is a daytimer and the other sports station will carry stuff like women's college softball).

@loeper makes some good points. For instance, the first half of the colts/green bay game last night was a blast to watch and the Packers ended up scoring 59 points. Not a word of mention about it today--is it because it was on ESPN?

A very large segment of young male sports fans are in fantasy leagues (notice how ESPN runs FF crawls on sports center) and those leagues are drafting now. There's hardly a mention of it or of other NFL teams on the Fan.

There's something to be said for being local, but I think the Fan is too local.

I'd assume it was simply because it didn't involve a local team.

Sorry, but for a Fantasy player, the 3rd exhibition game is like a regular season game because the starters typically play for the whole first half and sometimes into the 3rd quarter. It's especially crucial because you can see whether any of the rookies are going to get significant playing time. Last night's game was a match up of two top quarterbacks (Aaron Rodgers of GB, Peyton Manning of Indy) and it was a very entertaining game. The unusual final score (59 points) should have a merited at least a mention.

If they are really trying to get the young adult male audience, they need to be aware of fantasy and fantasy implications. There are almost daily segments of this on 1250.

Honest response: I hope it falls flat on it's face.

I'm not a member of the B94 cult, but personally I like MUSIC. This station does not play music and neither does 106.7 anymore. So, stations with music get my attention.

What would a "dyed in the wool" sports fan get from Madden?
