Hooked on an edit

I was timed out and couldn't add:

The Saturday Night Phenom was the closest thing to the Beatle Dominance in April 1964 when The Beatles occupied the top 5 single spots on the Hot 100 and the top 2 Lp spots in the same week.... the Bee Gees at the peak of Sat Nite Fever had svereal hits in the Top 100 by themselves and by Andy Gibb, Evonne Elliman , Tavares and Samantha Sang. They also had another hit LP on the top 200 lp chart besides Sat Nite Fever titled "Spirits Having Flown" which had 3 #1's. And Barry Gibb wrote the title song "Grease" for Frankie Valli.

Lets not forget the power behind Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and Urban Cowboy...John Travolta..... Disco and Country Music exploded thanks to Fever and Urban Cowboy and Oldies radio was given a boost by Grease....When It comes to modern day music movies Travolta is the Man.

You have never heard "Greased Lightning" over the air because of cookie cutter formats with no Imagimation or flat don't get It., both Grease Mega-Mixx's are perfect for air-play......hello, no-go......no wonder Oldies radio is dieing a slow death. And yes, "You're The One That I Want" is starting to catch up to "Satisfaction" in saturtation.

I'm getting tired of the repetitiveness of modern oldies stations too. I wish a few big stations like KLUV would toss a few mid-charters and "oh wow" records in with the Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller Band and Eddie Money hits too.

I'm sure "Greased Lightnin'" would test well with listeners knowing how popular the movie still is. I just found out the censored radio version exists on the "25th Anniversary" deluxe edition of the soundtrack. (and from the snippet on Amazon, the cleaned-up lyrics are pretty lame!)

I actually found it annoying and think its a good idea to edit it out, this is coming from someone who thinks the BJ Thomas version is the definitive one however :)

The fact that an early ban on Rod Stewart's 'Tonight's The Night' (Gonna Be Alright) by the entire RKO chain (KHJ/KFRC/CKLW, etc.) until the second verse was re-edited was another example of how times of changed over the past thirty-plus years.

WKBW replaced the line "Spread your wings and let me come inside" with "Oh, baby don't you hesitate".

WLS played it which was amazing because they used to edit almost everything.

I was about 10 years old when the Blue Swede version came out, so I thought it was great! I was actually disappointed the first time I ever recalled hearing the B. J. Thomas version, and it wasn't just from the lack of ooga-chagas! ;D

But I thought B. J. Thomas turned in a masterful cover of the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby." I especially like the changed lyrics in that one! I'm a big Beach Boys fan, and I got to see Brian Wilson in concert last fall. He didn't sing this one himself (at least not this time), but he turned it over to Jeffrey Foskett (band member) and Foskett absolutely nailed it! :) 8)

I gotta go with the B. J. Thomas version.

I think that on Johnny Cash's "Boy Named Sue", Columbia records beeped out the offending word on the record to begin with.

They not only bleeped out the offending word but they completely edited out the word 'damn' at the end of the song - where Johnny sings 'I think I'm gonna name him....Bill or George or any thing but Sue'. He actually says 'I think I'm gonna name him....Bill or George or any damn thing but Sue'.

They removed the damn word. You would never know it they did such a good editing job.

I remember that January day in 1974 when I turned on the radio to listen to my favorite station, WKRQ in Cincinnati which had been programmed by Bill Todd....The minute I heard the Blue Swede song I knew that station had gone to hell in a hand basket

A few months ago I heard an unedited version of the song for the first time, on Jim Owen's Lunchtime Theme Park on KSLX. How weird it sounded to hear the SOB and d--- words in that song -- didn't know an uncut version existed! Wonder where he got his hands on it?

talk about suggestive.."Summer Wine" Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood circa 1964 I think...if you had to edit anything out...you wouldn't have much left...

The Legacy Edition of Johnny Cash At San Quentin has the unedited "A Boy Named Sue". This show was taped for Granada Television in England and they aired the tune unedited. Even Johnny sang the bleep jokingly in later concerts.

It would be a disgrace if ANY station in the day, or now, refused to play "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede.
Such a wonderful, memorable and feel-good song for the 70's and today. WHLO should be ashamed of editing that portion out. Sex act reference...how incredibly rediculous!

You're kidding, right?

My response was from a poster who claimed "Hooked on A Feeling" was being edited due to an inappropriate reference. But geez, this is from 2009....I honestly don't even remember this post.

Not kidding. "Hooked On A Feeling" is a great song!
