Horrible decision for a new format

I haven't had a chance to listen to the new La Kalle, as it doesn't come in well in San Marcos. I remember the previous two La Kalle stations, 95.1 in late 2005 and 97.7 in 2007-08. I figured it would be pretty much identical to those.

A similar situation would be a station that used a moniker like "Digital" but played mostly reggaeton songs...

I checked out La Kalle's playlist and yeah, it is a lot like the former Digital 104-1. So cross that one off the list.

What X106-7 will most likely flip to in 2011:

1) Sports talk. This is a format that is really hot right now, with a lot of the AM stations switching to FM. I'm not sure if Cox owns ESPN 1250, but if Cox wants to put ESPN on FM, ESPN would accommodate them.

2) Rock Alternative. Yes, we have heard the argument, "but it will hurt KISS." While that may be true, CC seems likely to pick up the format at some point to hurt the rock-oriented formats that are Cox, and Cox may have the attitude of "if someone is going to bring it in anyway, it may as well be us."

3) Urban Contemporary. Similar to Movin' 97.5, themed "Today and Back in the Day." Lady GaGa, Rihanna, Kesha, etc., mixed in with Prince, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. Feature a "Freestyle retro mix" from noon to 1pm, and Wham! You have a winner. I would say play Wham! every hour on the hour, but that may be going a little too far.

With what national programming? About the only syndicated choice left is Sporting News Radio. I'm not convinced there's enough appetite for national sports talk programming in SA for a third station and the remaining network choice is a bit of a dog.

Cox could make ESPN Radio an offer to put them on FM, and in turn ESPN would opt of renewing a contract with BMP. It happened in Houston with ESPN 97-5 in 2007. ESPN was on 790AM, which was owned by Clear Channel, and Cumulus offered ESPN Radio the opportunity to be on FM in the Houston market, and ESPN Radio jumped ship.
 
Radio3787 brings up a good point. In Dallas, KDGE (alternative) and KEGL (active rock) both do very well.

So...

So why not San Antonio? The Alamo City has proven for years that this is a city that loves its rock, whether it be classic, active, progressive, "world class," and it could definitely support an alt rock station.

I still believe 106-7 has a greater chance of flipping to Sports FM during its annual format change that is set for approximately March 2011, but don't leave rock alternative out of the equation. Its better that Cox have the alt rocker than Clear Channel or someone else.
