I don't like it. It turns me away, but I've accepted it because we live in the Derby City lol.

Well im sure its the same in Daytona and Indianapolis people who dont like hearing all Daytona or Indy 500 talk all february in the case of Daytona or May for the Indy 500. but im sure they live with it

Great point.

Are you telling me that local professionals don't want to hear local (and topical) talk about the biggest thing in Louisville?
Send all that horse talk down here... There is (at best) minimal coverage of the Derby in these parts and I miss it like you don't know.... Does WHAS still do their wall-to-wall Derby Day coverage? It's some of the best radio I ever heard growing up... always wanted to be a part of it.

Yes they do.

nothing more scintillating than hearing disc jockeys blather on for hours from Churchill Downs all week long, as if they really know a damn thing about horse racing. Do you have to talk about the Derby Festival, the events, the celebs? Sure. But morning (or other) shows from music stations live from the backside all week long? B-O-R-I-N-G.

That being said, yes WHAS should do it because it's what they do and it's the kind of thing they do very well.

It's all about inclusion... living in the moment of the week, with each station (and talent) finding different angles, to showcase as many facets of the diamond that is the Derby festival and the race itself!!! To me, that's compelling radio.
Whose work DO you like? Who paints the best pictures? Who finds the best interviews? Who makes their station(s) feel like Louisville in this week of all weeks?
If you don't give a flip about the race (or the ballon race or the parade or the steamboat race or the chow wagon or the Pegasus pins) I completely understand. But as broadcast professionals, can you give some credit to the air talents who do their research and do the interviews and to the programmers who shift their daily clocks to accommodate a wonderful anomaly like the Derby?

In the words of Rufus: Tell me somethin' good

Parenthetically (yours),
Tom

P.s. I got a gold Pegasus pin this year. First one evah!!!

I've got great news for you then. This morning there were exactly 3 radio stations broadcasting from Churchill Downs. (Unless the Max or someone else was broadcasting from someplace other than the backside...)

There are only 5 tents this year, and Woodford Reserve is in one of them. VEZ and RKA were there. HAS was inside the Media Center. DJX and AMZ were no-shows.

You may not like the incessant Derby chatter for this one week a year, but I think it speaks badly about radio in general that our local coverage of the city's primier event has declined to this.

What do you mean declined to this Greg?

3 stations doing Derby coverage is a definite decline over past years. But I should have known not to speak so soon on Monday of Derby Week. Today is lots better- DJX and AMZ are in their tents, and the Max is in thier spot in the hall of the Media Center.

WFPL also broadcasts from the press box on Tues-Fri. That's the sweetest gig of all. You are not up at 3am, if it rains you are inside and they feed you up there! Still, that's only six. But you have to think how many stations have a live morning show anymore?

Maybe some stations have finally gotten a clue and understand not EVERYBODY wants all-Derby all day all week long. Should the WHAS' and WKRDs/WQKCs of the world be there and covering it a lot? ABSOLUTELY. Should stations whose listeners primarily come to them for music be on location blathering on and on about stuff they are clearly not into or interested in (which comes across the radio)? No. If everybody's doing the same thing, what's the point? Should these music stations' hosts be talking about the atmosphere, events, celebs? YES. There are ways of doing it without boring the crap out of listeners who are OK not getting drilled with it every 5 minutes.

Listeners are smart. They know who they think SHOULD cover Derby big-time (WHAS, the station that does it well and has for decades); they also know who the stations are who have no business pretending to "cover" this event (the others you mention) and will be punching buttons en masse so they can get the right balance of music and Derby related event info.

Yes, that's what it's all about, staying dry and being fed. I guess that does have the listener first in mind. ;) I also believe some music stations' shows are there simply so they feel like big shots, like they're more important for a week. I still question what there is for the audience on those stations (that they can't get from stations who SPECIALIZE in such event broadcasting).

Other than Joyner and Bob & Tom, all the other AM shows are live. What does that have to do with being a prerequisite to do their shows from the track all week long.

Indydood I thought you were perfect? Russ Parr is syndicated and will be here on Thurs and Fri. Dave & Jimmy are syndicated.

this just in: nobody is perfect. Forgot about Dave & Jimmy.

I was just saying what Indydood is saying. 5 days coverage for radio is waaaaay too much. I could understand and live with 2.

Hey Indydood or anyone else, wondering if you could provide the #'s for the morning shows in Louisville station by station?

You must be one of those "out of town owners" that we always hear about.

The Louisville stations ranked # 1, 2, 4, and 5 are there. #3 has a satellite morning show. (Winter Arb, 12+)
