It was one year ago today:
HOT 104 and the Gulf Coast WB present Back2Skool Bash, August 19 at the Mitchell Center, starring J-KWON, MONICA, FEFE DOBSON, RYAN CABRERA and BROOKE HOGAN, with special guest host JC CHASEZ and surprise guest HULK HOGAN.
HOT 104 broadcast live from 6am to 11pm that day, using a complicated system which employed a base station in the back stage area, which was connected to the radio station via ISDN line, and used high-gain antennae to permit wireless mic and IFB in-ear monitoring for talent through the entire interior of the Mitchell Center, and a secondary remote broadcast location, located on the plaza in front of the main entrance, with a separate mixer which combined the remote location mics and fed them back to the base station area via a short microwave hop.
HOT 104 had a total of eight wireless microphones, and four Comrex IFB receivers, allowing talent total wireless freedom both inside and outside of the building, with no signal loss due to the dual locations.
At any given time, all talent could communicate by simply speaking into their mics, which fed all of the IFB receivers. Also in the IFB mix was the mix-minus program feed from the radio station, as well as the board op's mic. Almost no use of cell phones or radios was needed that day due to this technology. A similar set up was used for Mardi Gras, with HOT 104 using Grand Central as a base.
About 7000 screaming fans showed up for the show - and as anyone who was there can tell you, the screaming never really stopped. The energy was amazing, and all of the performers, many of whom had been made to endure other "radio shows" with very small turnouts, remarked constantly about the crowd while onstage.
In my 15 years in radio, it was the single most enjoyable and satisfying day I had ever had. Congratulations to all who were involved! It's a great memory we all can cherish. Cherish? Oops, my bad... ;-)
