HOT 104's Back2Skool Bash

It was one year ago today:

HOT 104 and the Gulf Coast WB present Back2Skool Bash, August 19 at the Mitchell Center, starring J-KWON, MONICA, FEFE DOBSON, RYAN CABRERA and BROOKE HOGAN, with special guest host JC CHASEZ and surprise guest HULK HOGAN.

HOT 104 broadcast live from 6am to 11pm that day, using a complicated system which employed a base station in the back stage area, which was connected to the radio station via ISDN line, and used high-gain antennae to permit wireless mic and IFB in-ear monitoring for talent through the entire interior of the Mitchell Center, and a secondary remote broadcast location, located on the plaza in front of the main entrance, with a separate mixer which combined the remote location mics and fed them back to the base station area via a short microwave hop.

HOT 104 had a total of eight wireless microphones, and four Comrex IFB receivers, allowing talent total wireless freedom both inside and outside of the building, with no signal loss due to the dual locations.

At any given time, all talent could communicate by simply speaking into their mics, which fed all of the IFB receivers. Also in the IFB mix was the mix-minus program feed from the radio station, as well as the board op's mic. Almost no use of cell phones or radios was needed that day due to this technology. A similar set up was used for Mardi Gras, with HOT 104 using Grand Central as a base.

About 7000 screaming fans showed up for the show - and as anyone who was there can tell you, the screaming never really stopped. The energy was amazing, and all of the performers, many of whom had been made to endure other "radio shows" with very small turnouts, remarked constantly about the crowd while onstage.

In my 15 years in radio, it was the single most enjoyable and satisfying day I had ever had. Congratulations to all who were involved! It's a great memory we all can cherish. Cherish? Oops, my bad... ;-)

Wow. It really seems hard to believe, that B2SB was only ONE year ago...

I can honestly say that was the absolute most enjoyable day of my radio career (granted, it's only been four years for me) to date. It was a rush, just talking about the show on the air in the weeks leading up to it, when I'd VT weekend shifts for WYOK from Youngstown, OH, where I was doing nights at sister station WHOT. But flying down to the Coast and actually being a part of the show.... Amazing. People started lining up outside the Mitchell Center, as I remember it, around 9ish in the morning and the crowd swelled up outside, all day long. Just walking around and being identified as a member of the HOT 104 staff, having people tell me how excited they were for the show and how much they were looking forward to it.... It was a huge rush.

Ted (with some help, I'm sure :) did an awesome job with the planning of the live broadcast and the task of achieving everything that we wanted to do as a staff, with the in-ear monitoring, the ability to be literally anywhere on the Mitchell Center grounds, inside the Mitchell Center itself, wherever... and still being able to communicate with everyone else without the use of cell phones. To someone simply looking at it from the outside, you might be thinking, "Wow, big whoop, not so tough to do, etc".. It was tricky, but in the end, it all came off really well.

The show itself was hugely successful and I really enjoyed being a part of it.

It's a shame how far things have fallen since, though. Granted, Ivan was a HUGE factor in that, but those involved in the whole thing know what I mean.

If anyone is interested, here's where the HOT 104 staff at that time is at, now:

Ted: Doing his thing at KBKS / Seattle, in addition to (I believe) going into the home mortgage business, where he'll probably make more money in ONE year than I'll make in FIFTEEN years of radio.

Scott Adams: Currently the morning dude at KCHZ / Kansas City. Haven't talked to him in a minute, but the last I knew, he was doing fairly well there.

B-Dub: Nights at WXSS / Milwaukee. Again, doing pretty well for himself.

Heather Branch: The last I knew, she was with Entercom in Greensboro, NC.

Trey (street team leader and weekend dude): Currently deployed with his Army Reserve unit, covering Fort Knox KY in absence of the usual force there... or at least, this is the last info I have about it.

Q-Tip (weekend dude and B-Dub's stunt bitch): Still at HOT 104, where he's now known as "Coot'r."

TJ (weekend dude): Just left HOT 104, but I've heard he's got something cookin'. The very best of luck to him!

Cheddar (weekend dude): AKA, yours truly... Afternoons (moving to nights on Monday) and MD for WVZA / Marion - Carbondale, IL. Also doing weekends at KSLZ / St. Louis and cyber nights (for now) for WAKZ / Youngstown, OH.

Jack Shell (production / creative services director): Currently in the same role for Cumulus / Nashville.

TO EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH BACK 2 SKOOL BASH:

Thank you for your roles in the most fun I have ever had, in radio or outside of it. The memory of that day will stay with me for a VERY long time.... Meeting Monica.... Hanging out with Ryan Cabrera, who is still one of the nicest, most humble people that I've met in my life, in radio or outside of it..... My "incident" with Hulk Hogan, which really wasn't an incident at all...

Here's hoping that HOT 104 might eventually accomplish the goal that we were all striving for while we were there.

I didn't go to the Bash, but from what I heard on the radio that night and the TV news coverage that followed, it seemed to be nothing short of what you described. <P ID="signature">______________
