Hot 97 (87.7) off the air

Either they did get raided and found a way to get back on, or maybe it was just tech difficulties. Can they get away with being on 87.7 as long as they don't interfere with legit stations or
aircraft radio? There are a few legit stations on 87.9 (barely any) as Dan S. mentioned to me
yesterday (not around here AFAIK)

Yup, they're back but they sound like crap. No Stereo, no audio processing and very splattery. Heard them last night on the way home from work. Coverage is so...so. They're crazy in firing up again.
 
I really doubt that Jam'n 94.5 is loosing any revenue, or atleast any significant revenue, from this pirate. Whenever I listen to a commerical break on Hot 97 Boston, it's mainly PSA's and Club Promotions. Plus, Jam'n targets the suburbs and Hot 97 Boston targets the urbanites.

Unlicensed stations are not rated, and in any event Boston is a PPM market and "Hot" can't have an encoder...so it's not even like there's the possibility of a stray diary entry.
 
Splattery, and not as powerful as before. I heard them on Lynn Shore Drive as I headed toward Nahant to see dead olde Dad at his rest home. Sounded like they were off freq (my car stereo only goes down to 87.7, some may go down to 87.5--but it sounded off freq in some way) and weak. Tried again nr Beverly-Salem bridge, wouldn't come in at all

not the craziest if a raid was the case. Big City 101.3 got raided and they were back on next day (in mono) actually bragging about the quick recovery after the siezure.

I really hope this was FCC action, it's about time they shut these knuckleheads down. For all the money and trouble they put into it, they could have LMA'ed WILD and have had a legit operation. Of course, someone will say "but they don't want to be on FM", but I say "tough crap". Them's the rules, follow them. I want to drive a Bentley, but that doesn't mean I can go out and steal one.
 
More curiosity about the situation at their more-or-less official Facebook group, with fans wondering "how come I can't pick you up anymore"; "can't hear you in the car" etc.
 
A 5000 watt transmitter is pretty hard to get on the cheap. I think they got their hands on an old TV Channel 6 transmitter, and just used the audio part of it to broadcast on 87.7. That explains why they were off frequency, and also explains how a pirate could have such a powerful signal, since those analog Channel 6 transmitters were worthless after the digital transition. 87.7 had been on the air continuously for almost 2 years, and I'm sure they have a big following. A similar LPTV station in New York City got a million cume and 1.0 share on 87.7. I would not doubt that Hot 97/87.7 would have had at least 0.5 if they were rated.

I remember DXing them in New Jersey on 3 separate occasions, and was amazed that a pirate station could make it that far. I also saw that Hot 87.7 was heard in Georgia via e-skip last summer.

Wonder why they weren't raided sooner (if they were raided at all). They had the biggest pirate signal in Boston, stronger than some non-coms. They seemed to have many advertisers. They even cursed on the air. A 10,000 dollar fine would be nothing compared to 2 years of tax free ad revenue.
 
I was thinking same thing. And isn't Ch 6 audio (analog) 87.75 not strictly 87.7? The second time they fired up a transmitter after the initial shutdown you really noticed the off-center deal.

If a certain gangster had stuck around this area instead of fleeing to Santa Monica (and managed to not get caught, here), perhaps he could have helped them. Pay just a little bit of protection money and he'd make sure the FCC stays away.

Facebook page still has people wondering why they're only getting static etc at 87.7. One post from them said they plan to come back to the airwaves tomorrow (18 hrs ago)
 
They should LMA WILD instead of the friggin Chinese government aren't-we-so-wonderful even though we oppress everyone propaganda. They can have a legit signal, and don't have to worry about being shut down.

I wonder if they'll refund all of those ad buys from the Wilbur, Live Nation etc. Doubt it. That's what you get for buying time on a pirate radio station, so let that be a lesson to them. Many of us tried to explain that to the folks at various places, including the fact that they were supporting an illegal operation, but that fell on deaf ears.

I can see how someone at a mom-and-pop business, who buys ad time and sweeps the floors, wouldn't understand the difference between Hot 97 and Jam'n 94.5, but wouldn't Live Nation be buying time through an agency? Certainly ad agencies know the difference, don't they? Or is all media the same to them, and the only differences between buying time on Hot 97 as opposed to WJMN is the same as that between buying a full-page ad in the Globe and buying the same space in the Patriot Ledger are reach and cost?
 
Far be it for them to go the legit way in buying time on WILD, etc. Better to just throw that transmitter on and throw caution to the wind. And any money made by this operation with ad buys--I'm guessing not one penny is being sent to the IRS...
