Are you serious? "Monolithic White audience"???
Listen to yourself. How many Urban stations (music and talk) cater to a Black audience? How many Spanish stations? How many brokered/ethnic AM's?
For that matter, how many stations appeal to all races..like News/NPR/Sports and some Talk formats? That statement is just ridiculous.
It appears the phrase "public airwaves" means to you that you're somehow enititled to a format you like.
For the 99,999,999th time...broadcasting IS A BUSINESS. Full stop.
There is no plot at the FCC to squeeze out smaller broadcasters...it's supply and demand. Many waterfront homes are financially out of reach of most of us but you don't hear people whining about it.
The airwaves are to be operated in the "public interest, convenience, and necessity". You may not think so, but the hundreds of millions of people who turn the radio on every day (for free!) tells me the public interest is being served.
There are always segments of "the public" underserved from time to time. You can't please everyone all the time.
