House Seeks to Defund CPB

The member who posted a sample email for correspondence that can be sent to elected officials opposing these cuts certainly is entitled to their opinion, and they have every right to lobby public officials on behalf of that opinion.

I will say though as somebody who has already been put on Double Secret Probation here once for being "too political" I find it very interesting that a lengthy letter lobbying a Member of Congress on one particular side of an issue and urging others to do the same is not considered such.

I don't have a problem with the post, I just have the sneaking suspicion that if I posted a letter taking the opposing side the powers that be would.

You can call me out by name, @FreddyE1977

First of all, I did not urge others to do the same at all and lobby their elected officials.

My letter wasn't political. It was factual with real life examples.

(Assuming youre referring to me, since im the only one who posted an email that I recall about this)

That (ignorance) has always been my problem with the jury system, too. All too often, one or several seated on the "jury of one's peers" are not peers of the defendant at all. They're inferiors, too thick to fully understand the case and who often get the verdict wrong -- or cause mistrials by clinging to the wrong opinion in the face of evidence everyone else comprehends.
Although I still believe in the jury of one's peers idea by principle, after seeing it in operation a few times I have to agree with you. It's as faulty as everything else about American Democracy.

Back on topic, today, April 15th, this issue came up in DC again. I see it as Radio, once more, being under attack. Whatever one may think of NPR in general, public radio is Radio, and there are many different stripes of public radio. There's the NPR stations in big metros, and then there are the smaller operations that are vital to their communities, like SomeRadioGuy's station in Alaska. There are some smaller cities in Oregon where the only viable radio news outlet is the local FM outlet of OPB, unless one depends on the AM band at night.

One would think that, financially, there are bigger items on the Federal budget that could see auditing or budget cuts. CPB, when compared to an aircraft carrier, or the Space Force, is pretty much small potatoes.

So glad you posted that story. There's so much misinformation about CPB and NPR. It's all turned into this huge fake story. When you hear Brendan Carr or MTG talk about it, it's completely false. But they have a big megaphone, so it's all people hear. They need to hear the other side.

And because they say it, their constituents take it lock stock n barrell as gospel.

NPR, CPB, PBS have a niche audience, but it is highly probable that their listeners are more likely than average to be politically involved ... and mostly on the left side of the spectrum. The government-subsidized media have not been serious about being objective, which is reflected in many ways. They choose left-wing announcers and writers, choose slanted stories to cover, and utilize language and terminology which will favor left wing causes. This would not be wrong EXCEPT that they are using taxpayer dollars for their propaganda. Both sides of the political aisle should be able to see how wrong that is, but the since the Democrats are beneficiaries, there is support for these media outlets.

Actually they're not. Neither you nor the administration have demonstrated that ANY taxpayer money goes to the news division. All we know for sure is it subsidizes the satellite system. But that's available to everyone, even Salem or Fox. NPR is a big company that does many things. It was created by an act of congress, but is an independent company. The real distributor of taxpayer dollars is CPB, and that money subsidizes local radio stations in a lot of red states like Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Alaska. They're the ones who will be hurt.

BTW, CPB doesn't have any audience because it doesn't own or produce any programming. None of the stations that carry NPR programming are forced to do so. If they felt the news was biased or propaganda, they could cancel the shows and save a lot of money. But they don't.

Give me your full name and address, i'll mail you your $3 in taxes back out of my own pocket

Signed,
An NPR station manager in rural alaska whos station would be devastated without this funding

one station in alaska, KOTZ/KINU has cut back from 24 to 18 hours a day on air, theyve cut some staff. KDLG may have to start signing off at midnight to save about $2500 on their power bill every month. KCHU is about to lose their tower to erosion and the entire station because of funding.. they are in danger of going off air before next spring. several stations are in precarious situations because the state vetos state funding for us and they serve rural population that even if ever person donated, it wouldnt be enough

I haven't actually looked at why this happened, but Judith Porter was on WFAE at least an hour early last week. I say at least because I turn the radio on around 9 so it'll be on for "Wait! Wait!" at 10, and that's when Judith Porter used to come on. There would be one person before the top of the hour news, and then she would come on after the news and during breaks.

Could be they doubled the time she spends.
