Houston area radio notes (update thread)

The thing with Houston translators is they can easily go out 45+ miles for some reason…
I have heard the 104.5 and 105.3 as far down as The Kemah Board walk

.

And I have heard 104.5 on I10 all the way to Bucces on Warton tx.

Maybe buy one of those translators.
Audacy needs a solid, full market FM signal if it is going to simulcast SportsRadio 610. KLOL would provide that, but does Audacy want to step away from its Spanish language effort here?

Wild and crazy scenario that most will ridicule: As part of the upcoming consolidation frenzy, SBS is merged into Audacy in order for the latter to expand its Spanish language portfolio. The merged company blows out Mega, moves the successful La Ley format to 101.1, and launches a 610 simulcast on 92.1.

I still don’t see Audacy stranding sports on AM in market #5. But where it could wind up is still a point of speculation.

Or KILT-AM/FM for sports.

SportsRadio KILT

The old thread was closed due to inactivity, but noting that the application to move the transmitter of K218EJ 91.5 to near Loop 610 and Hwy 288 as well as change frequency to 89.7 was dismissed by the FCC today. This would have been a translator for KHCB (AM) and there was chatter that the ultimate site destination was one of the downtown Houston buildings.

Back to the drawing board if KHCB wants a decent Houston FM signal for its Spanish language service. Would they ever want 97.5? Or do a deal with one of the existing downtown translators?

Original thread:

97.5 is off the air this afternoon at 4:15 PM.
Still off the air at a check just before 6pm, noticed it missing around 3:30p. Programming still going on 97.9 HD-2 as well as their webstream. One host thanked the audience for listening on the app and added they might have to do so tomorrow, so sounds like a significant transmitter failure.

Have to admit every time I find KFNC off the air I wonder if Gow Media has finally thrown in the towel.🤔

The 102.5 translator has LA CALLE RDS. Their legal ID is the same I heard on 99.5 mentioning only the 2 99.5 translators. The 102.5 (& 107.3) in Conroe have been dead air since last night but that 102.5 RDS still says ROMANCE.

MediaFrog do you know if KJFI is still off?

I’m out of town this weekend, but KJFI was still off the air Friday 5/15 when I last checked. Has been off the air since May 1. Will check when I get back Sunday evening.
KJFI is still off the air as of Sunday evening. It has experienced outages in the past, but never for this long. Too early to wonder if it has disappeared into the night.

The KJFI owner is “Iglesia Mundial de Oracion” which happens to have the same address as Centro Cristiano de Vida Eterna.🤔😆

Houston featured on the RadioInsight weekly FCC Report:

One correction to the article: It was a ~1,000 foot tower for KJOJ-FM that collapsed. The station had a CP for a 2,000 foot tower but that was never built.

Well KJHJ-LP & KCVE-LP took a note from the AM tower they're on and are off the air now. Going south on 45 La Calle started to come in pretty weak in my car around 242

Assume you are referring to KJOZ which has been off the air since the beginning of March. Of course no silent notification to the FCC.

KJFI is still off the air. Where is La Calle coming from? K273AL?

Meanwhile, memo to Audacy Houston: The audio level on SportsRadio 610 is very low. Please fix. Your sportstalk competitors don’t have this problem.

(Yes I am aware 610 had a lengthy STL failure this morning which might have something to do with the problem.)
