Houston is now in "The Zone"!

So did anyone hear the actual launch? Was it pretty eventless as when Cox launched The Eagle? They just started using the new ID's and sweepers at 6AM.
Anyone record it?

It's a great station, but I love to hear some Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Kings of Leon, John Mayer, & Norah Jones. That would be an awesome station to go up against Cumulus' 103-7. Jack-FM; An Alternative AC Station.

There are some catty little girls on this thread...mostly out of work in Mom's basement, I presume. I suspect there's a fair slice of Buzz's upper end to be had with this mix. Alternative without the whiny 2K aggro babies has a certain ring to it. It'll certainly move some cume around.

This station will be no more of a menace to The Buzz than it will be for Mix.

The Zone's playlist will have very little appeal to most male listeners of The Buzz, and probably won't even have much appeal to the younger half of that station's female audience. Worst case scenario, The Buzz loses 1 point of AQH share to this newcomer (as compared to their trailing 12 month average).

The Buzz gets a substantial portion of its ratings by default due to the market lacking an Active Rock station.

The playlist reminds me of the Classic Alternative format tried on 96.3 in Detroit about a decade ago when it was still known as Planet 96-3. The high amount of repetition and softness of the playlist got old very quickly.

The bottom line is that the fine people in the Cox sales department have to sell this format. And as of today, 11-08-10, they have a long way to go to catch up to the Buzz. It will be interesting to see how much effort the company puts into marketing.

Last tune - Bon Jovi, Wanted Dead Or Alive.
There was a series of clips of rejected formats, hip hop, sports talk, urban ac, all news, ending with reggaeton (and as Daddy Yankee continues to play, people saying "no, please no" before it settled into the Zone.
First tune: Foo Fighters, Learning to Fly.

Foo Fighters was a great start but as a 33 year old white male, the playlist is mostly full of songs that were beat to death in my high school and college days.  Sure it's nice to hear them from time to time but the burn out factor is HIGH!

I switched back and forth between 106.9 and 106.9-HD2 several times today.  Nearly every time, the HD2 channel was playing a better song.  Why re-invent the wheel when the HD2 was basically loaded with The Zone's format?

Im not a PD or con'sultant but i'd model a 80s 90s classic alternative station like the late XM Lucy channel. Play your core artist and songs but rotate in a fresh batch of more obscure/forgotten tunes every few weeks or so to keep a classic format fresh.

"Obscure" and "forgotten" songs are obscure and forgotten for a reason....

Yeah, because they didnt make the con'sultants list of 150 approved songs.

Sampling The Zone it appears that Cox took 106.9, slapped a different color paint on the walls, and moved the furniture around. Somewhat different, but nothing that screams "format change." Same basic presentation, and I suspect, what will become obvious as an equally repetitive playlist.

Perhaps the most important thing that was accomplished is that there is much more musical and demographic separation from sibling KGLK, whose format was colliding with The Point.

Any word on new calls?

Shall we start the death pool on the current incarnation of 103.7?

I'd give it 3 months before cumulus spins the format wheel

Other way around! KHJK has an advantage as it plays new music in addition to 80s & 90s. Id give The Zone some time before it morphs into an AOR.

I think it's going to be KZNH because the new calls will probably distant itself away from The Point (The Station's Previous Format) and The Eagle. Also, The Majority of The Point's non-alternative music would probably go to The Eagle, but it looks like That station may go Classic Rock at any moment now.

I keep hearing so much Matchbox 20 on this "alternative" station that I can't help but wonder if Cox is doing the slow evolution thing to try to hold onto whatever advertisers The Point had and we may not be listening to the final product.

If that is the strategy, I'm not a fan of it. I've always felt that format changes should feel like, well, changes. The slowly evolving thing to retain clients kills the wow factor for listeners and sacrifices long term viability for short term profit.

Of course, that may not be the plan at all. What they are now may be what they're going to be. If that's the case, what they're going to be is a zero point something radio station.

I suspect if they change the calls they would be KHZN-Conroe. It is available, but there is no guarantee that there will be a change. Think 97.1. Still KTHT, though not "Hot 97" anymore.

Concerning KTHT, those calls originally meant Keep Talking Houston Texas when they 1st appeared in the 1940s on 1230AM before moving to 790AM. Details here on the original KTHT:

By the way, those same calls were on Channel 67 in the 1980s.

KHZN is available? I just looked on the FCC's call sign reservation system and it is currently assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard.

promising format concept but the music is not living up to the potential. I was expecting something more like Sirius/XM First Wave, not 75% of the same songs that were on the Point. At least they aren't playing Belinda Carlisle's "Circle in the Sand" every hour any more, but they definitely emphasize "80s and 90s" more than "alternative."

If they really wanted to go the "alternative" classics route, they should have a playlist similar to KROQ-HD2.. Currently they are playing Reptile by The Church.. When was the last time a Houston station played that song?? Anyway, thanks to an ipod app, I can listen to this station at anytime.

Forgot to add a link if anyone cares: http://www.roqofthe80s.com/
