That's because nobody is competing with 97.9 the box
or radio-ones Urban ac
Yes. Miami (WHQT) and Birmingham (WBHK; and the highest ranked urban AC in the country).willdav713 said:Mike said:mr.ric said:And Urban is ONCE AGAIN still on top...

I wish San Antonio had an Urban AC, nothing has filled the void of KSJL.
Does Cox Radio do Urban AC?
Cox also has its flagship urban, WALR in Atlanta. But until last year Cox ran that station in the ground due to its urban oldies format being overplayed (it was fragmented to WBTS and WFOX in the 2000s for that reson).ksradiogeek said:Yes. KBXX and KMJQ have always been in the Top 5 (sometimes 10) for sometime now. Seems like Radio One invests in the Houston cluster this way to ensure finances for local programming aside from Tom Joyner overall; Madd Hatta still has a job and syndicated radio (i.e. Rickey Smiley) is kept at bay. But music wise, KBXX still runs their selection into the ground while KMJQ has improved its selection as of recent - they play more 80s and 90s on the weekends now.mr.ric said:And Urban is ONCE AGAIN still on top...

Also it is due to full market coverage too. The last time Houston had other full market urbans aside from the two are Love 94 and KPTY (104.9 albeit a lower wattage).
willdav713 said:Wasn't Love 94 a Adult Contemporary station? Are you sure it was Urban Adult Contemporary? I think you are mistaking KLTY 93.7 which was Disco in the late 70s early 80s (The station that played the most Bee Gee's Songs) with KHYS Y-98.5 1987-9/1988 1st incarnation and 2/1991-5/1995 second incarnation "Y-98.5 is back" which was Urban AC until the Clear Channel Radio acquired KMJQ followed by the launch of AM 1590 Solid Gold Soul (Soul Oldies-KYOK)

That whole era seems to be a little ahead of your time. See this: http://houstonradiohistory.blogspot.com/2010/11/fm-chronology-1960s-part-iii-kbno-fm.html
Note that Love 94 was KRLY 93.7 (nee KBNO), which had transitioned to a Top 40 (following its disco days) with an increasing AC/urban slant before becoming Urban AC in 1981. One notable at Love 94 was Val Wilson, who later moved on to KMJQ.
