How 'bout that, Jack

> Jukebox over?
>
I think that's about where Jack will stay until the format dies. It's never going to be a huge format. It's a niche and the burnout factor of Donna Summer into Queen into Celine Dion is relatively high.

What does 25-54 say?

That's the only "opinion" that matters these days.

Not bragging rights for 12+.

Since we're not allowed to post exact 25-54 numbers, I'll say that they're doing ok, but they're off almost 25% from the Winter Book. They're down in the KZPS/Mix/Live territory now.

That's funny... I mean, a station that plays everything is a niche? Isn't that, like, the opposite of "niche"?

I know what you meant, and what you meant is true, but the words are still funny, y'know?

I think Jack will stick around for a while... I mean, look at the opperating costs... No jocks, few paychecks, little promotional budget... Right now, Jack is a station that is opperating in the black, so they'll be around a while.<P ID="signature">______________

I fear you're right, Bingo. Big companies like Infinity love "Jack" for the above reasons. They have much bigger problems right now also than "Jack"... KVIL, KLLI (after Stern leaves). I'll be anxious to see KLUV's numbers the first book without Ron Chapman. I know Jody Dean is a local favorite, but so was Ken Barnett, and we all saw what happened when he tried to take over for Chapman at KVIL. So right now, Infinity management in Dallas is loving "Jack", so don't look for any immediate changes.

But Jack was bound to have a "wow" factor in the beginning, and two books are like two chapters of a book -- they don't tell the whole story.

And just on this board recently was a discussion of the limitation of Arbitron's accuracy.

In every big market, Jack has improved the 25-54 numbers with low overhead. Of course, here Wild was the butt of all the jokes.

But WCBS-FM and KCBS-FM are no jokes.

The bottom line: Will Jack help sell to the 25-54 group?

Will it be a ratings blockbuster? Will it have "legs"?

Who knows? Personally, I think it is more than a niche, but will wind up less than a legendary format.

But all the sales people care about are their commissions this week.

Hey, radio is a business.

Infinity is obviously more concerned about KLUV in that demo. The PD is gone, the new one is planning changes.

And KVIL ... well.

Ok if'n ya wanna split hairs, every radio format is a niche designed to court some narrow spectrum of the arbitron sample ;-)

In order to not be a niche we'd have to include everyone. If you thought some of Jack's segs were train wrecks try picturing some Etta James into Toby Keith into Megadeth.

I knew whatcha meant, though...it's Friday and I don't wanna be @ work today!

Almost every segue on top 40 in the '60s and '70s was a "train wreck".

Mid '70s -- "Convoy" (the CB novelty song) by C.W. McCall to "Can't Get Enough" by Bad Company, for example.

At least in that way, Jack emulates the old Top 40 stations of 30 and 40 years ago.

"The Mighty 1190" does even more of that.

Broadly speaking, every station has had a niche since block programming ended after the birth of television.

Jack questions

Get real. In the key 25-54 demo, they're top 10. Most stations in Dallas are looking UP at Jack and the other stations in the top ten.

I've asked these questions before but have NEVER gotten an answer:

*why is it so many on these boards nitpick on every dip in ratings any of the JACK stations take?

*did you notice other stations in the Dallas spring Arbitron also went down? Why aren't you slamming them? Which of them will change format next? (BTW, 14 Dallas radio stations were flat or went down in the just-released ratings).

*Why do you proclaim the JACK format must be over and out whenever a JACK station doesn't have an upswing in ratings (even worse, when they do have an increase they get crucified for not going up more and faster)?

Just curious. Other than the usual "I hate JACK" B.S., can any of you answer these questions? It would be nice to hear some professional, reasonable evidence to back up your constant bashing of the format. thanks.

It probably has something to do with the fact that a) it's new and b) there's a general concern/jealousy/ego among the programming folks that the bottom-line, penny-pinching attitude has reached new heights and all of our jobs are in jeopardy if Jack and its ilk become wildly successful.

I certainly hope jukebox radio doesn't become the norm, and not just because I enjoy playing radio. Formats like Jack, to me, are a give up - a bean counter's delight. No costly jock overhead (ok so that's a stretch), small promotions budget, and a big bonus for corporate sycophants like Kurt for widening the profit margin.

Radio over the last 10-15 years has become a disservice to the market it serves, which is ironic considering it was originally intended to do the opposite.

How's that?

They have nothing better to do

I can remember a time back in the day when the DJs on the air at a station in
Sacramento, CA. pulled their weight because when they weren't on the air they
were the sales staff selling time on the station and their shows themselves. Now there is a way
to again lower that "Costly Jock Overhead." You want to be on the air at my
station? Simple, Just bring me the money!

Not legendary, no, but it will have 'legs' because it is profitable. Sad to say, but radio without talent is like going to Three Forks by yourself: gets the job done, but leaves a lot to be desired (from someone way, way outside of the industry.)
