How Did Mark Thompson do On 100.3 2/2/15

Maybe its an 'only in LA thing' but I never found either one individually, or the duo very entertaining. For a couple of years in the very early 90s (IIRC), their show was broadcast on San Francisco's KRQR (long defunct now - owned by CBS). Other than getting some publicity by helping to get a sitting San Francisco Mayor defeated (the idiot Mayor Jordan, who thought it would be a clever bit of publicity to take a shower with two morning radio DJs), their show didn't attract much interest or attention.

I didn't know Thompson did TV. Are you sure it isn't the other Mark Thompson? The guy who works (or worked) for Fox, and started as a meteorologist? He was on Bay Area TV - prior to LA.

Final question - why would a decades-popular morning radio DJ need money, unless he was a bad investor? It's not like podcasts take a huge investment to record.

Mark did a tv show with Brian for a short period and he did some acting in LA. Maybe the wife and kids spent alot of the money. LA ain't cheap.. His wife was irritating.

Tuned in today 2/10/15 to Mark's show..on internet.. they had a hard time getting his daughter Katie on who was at a gas station trying to get people to listen to Mark's show. (This is major market radio?) she is called the Chick on the street. So his daughter is a prostitute? Never got to hear it as I had to leave for work. I saw a video of one of her broadcasts and he uses her as a puppet to promote his show. I can't understand why a Dad would want to do that to his own daughter. I was 22 when I got a my first radio job..didnt have any help but a couple internships at a TV station and a radio station. It was part time weekends on a top 40 FM .. No one ever degraded me on air as much as Mark does his own daughter.. Chick on the street is so bad a moniker being we are trying more today to empower young women. Mark Thompson ridiculing his 22 year old daughter on air is doing a disservice to young woman considering broadcasting for a career.

Like a lot of legendary acts, I think coming back like this can only hurt Mark's rep in the end. A lot people have suffered by trying lame comebacks when their original career was more than enough to stand on its own. Rick Dees is the leader of that parade. Some of the work he did on Movin' was simply embarrassing.

Right, Mark and Brians time has come and gone. One can not only think of Rick Dees sad performance on KMVN but us older guys can remember former Today show host Dave Garroways tragic end on KFI.

Garroway's "tragic" end? He was on the station as evening host from 1970-71, just prior to its sale to Cox. He was as I recall no more or less successful than other s in KFI's traditional magazine-style format in competing with top forty radio - but "tragic?" Garroway committed suicide a decade later due to his battle with cancer. that was tragic - but just not making it on KFI when no one else was either? Please explain.

I loved listening to Gary Owens when he was on KFWB in 1962 and then when he was on KMPC for 19 years. He's worked at many other Los Angeles stations, including the aforementioned KFI. I think he's the wittiest person to ever be on the radio. But in 2003-04 he taped voice tracks for adult-standards KLAC. Where I used to hear silly jokes and parodies and interviews and interaction between Garish and the news/traffic reporters, I now heard his tape-recorded voice only four or five times an hour, and he might recite a one-liner on one of those occasions. What is worse: bringing back a DJ whose time has come and gone...or hiring a radio legend and not allowing him to do a live program?

Suppressing a legend is obviously not the best - but when the legend is 78 years old and perhaps not wanting to do four hours live can you entirely blame management for settling for less?

Hmmm. Apparently the listeners didn't get that memo. Mark debuts as the #2 morning show in 25-54 in the numbers that came out yesterday.

My Nielsen does not match your Nielsen. I show Mark / KSWD in a tie for a very respectable 7th with KRTH and only 0.1 behind KOST. Ahead of them are KIIS, KROQ, KLVE, KAMP and KBIG.

Even if the show is not #2, it is very strong and the pretty much a "must buy" for transactional advertisers.

The reason your numbers don't match is because he forgot to type 'Men' before 25-54. I thought I read somewhere that he debuted in second place with men 25-54.
I wonder if he can keep those ratings up.

David: Sorry. Typo on my end. Should have read "#2 in Men 25-54".

Gotcha. In fact, the show is #2 in Men 25-54, which is great. Inside Radio is reporting this in today's headlines, too.

So for the first time in recorded history, Uncle Joe Benson vacates morning drive for a replacement that actually works.

To say I am surprised is an understatement.

Now the question we'll all be asking is whether Mark can sustain this initial level of listenership.

You scared me! You are never wrong!

Michael rarely makes mistakes, but does occasionally. I caught him up in one once and he was nice enough to admit it. I was going to remember it, so I could use it against him someday, but now I've forgotten. Damn this getting-old thing!

According to Barrett, Joe also improved the numbers in his new timeslot, so it's a win-win thus far.

Michael has written me quite a few times to correct errors in some of the Rewind features that I've written for LARadio.com and K.M. has often had to correct statements that I've made on this site. I've written Don Barrett several times when I've found errors on his "Where Are They Now" section. Many of Don's errors---and my own errors---have appeared because there is so much conflicting information on the World Wide Web. One example: five different birthdates for Herbert "Zeppo" Marx. I've edited several radio-related Wikipedia pages which contained wrong dates, wrong call letters and other errors. I've also learned to not rely solely on Wikipedia for research. Michael never makes mistakes because he has a collection of approximately seven million radio magazines going back to the 18th century.

What is puzzling to me is that many people consider KLOS to be a "dinosaur".....and KSWD plays the same songs that KLOS has played for decades.....and now KSWD has a morning man who spent 25 years at KLOS.....and the ratings are improving. Go figure!

Everything old is new again?
