How good does The Arrow do in Houston?

12+ for Classis Rock (or for anyone for that matter) doiesn't mean anything. Take a look at the 25-54 numbers.

Dean & Rog - 5th
middays - 12th
afternoons - 7th
nights 10th

Considering most of the songs they play have been heard 1,756,567,896,173,546,876,456,213,612,886 times, I'd say they're not doing too bad.

I'd say they are doing very well. The Arrow is a powerhouse classic rocker in the entire southern region. ::)

Oh, brother!

The thing I like about the Arrow is they seem to have a much deeper playlist than most Classic Rock stations. I worked at one a few years back that only had around 400 songs in active rotation... ugh! How many times a week did I need to play "Carry On Wayward Son" (a song that I'm just now able to tolerate again.)

Plus you can hear some pretty unexpected stuff when they do the all-request weekends.

The Arrow got a deeper playlist last year. Many claimed it was from the competition from KIOL. I disagree. Competition does not make a better radio station. The Arrow, well, just rocks.

TheClearAnswer just taught you something...NOW USE IT!!!!

Having sampled both stations on-line for over a month now, I perfer Rock 103 most of the time (except the morning show)

I listen to 103.7 more than 93.7 anytime..(when I AM listening to 103.7 they SOUND like a Classic Rock station...much like 92.5 KZPS in Dallas)...and yes, I do listen to W&J sometimes....(I miss personality MUSIC stations though...ahh the good ole days when Top40 ruled and DJS played music as well as funny bits)

 What makes a good radio station? A great structured, targeted and consulted playlist. Plus great personalities live or tracked, it does not matter to me. :-*

TheClearAnswer has spoken, call it a free MBA course for radio

Their playlist is tired. Period! People are moving away from radio in droves. Wake up and smell the exodus!

Radiodial has spoken with great wisdom the cold truth. Cherish it ClearAnswer... cherish it!

The Arrow used to be my top station, but their playlist has become very old and overplayed as mentioned. Once you go XM you never go back anyway. If I want classic rock, I have several XM channels from which type to choose. Clear Answer: Maybe you should think about keeping your employment options open because the death of over-the-air radio is just a few years away, plus your beloved CC will turn on you at a moment's notice and you'll be on your ass like so many others. Be aware!

I work for a classic rock station and we've actually had a few people CANCEL their satellite subscriptions because they go TOO deep. It's not fun or sexy to play the hits for the masses...but it works

That's the first time I've ever heard of anyone cancelling their satellite subscription because of TOO MANY CHOICES. I love classic rock, but once I discovered satellite, as many will in the years to come, I love the depth of choice of classic rock WITHOUT COMMERCIALS! For pure music lovers like myself, it's sheer heaven. I'm afraid the death of commercial radio as we know it is few years away and it will happen. I believe the same holds true for commercial TV as well, but probably further off. I worked in TV for several stations for 20 years before leaving the horrible corporate world for my own business, now making me 7 seven figures a year with no corporate or media bullshit. I encourage those of you working in the corporate media world to find better employment. CC, CBS, Cumulus, Disney, Fox, etc.... will kill all of you or at least put you all in the poorhouse eventually. They care NOTHING about their employees and if you're one, as I pointed out to the ClearAnswer, you WILL be a target some day. When I left TV 6 years ago I predicted radio and TV time will be eventually sold on eBay. I still believe that will be true in the future. Remember where you first heard that. If you want a future in the media BUSINESS get on eBay or somewhere online that will eventually broker airtime.

LISTEN HARD CLEAR ANSWER!!!!!!

Times have changed. People simply want what's quick, easy, and familiar to them. 90% of the requests at a classic rock station are for Zep, Skynyrd, and Eagles etc. The suburban living, chain restaurant eating, mall shopping 42 year old dad wants to hear something he knows and can sing along to when he turns on the radio. Very, verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry few people in the audience are as adamant and passionate about their music as the people that post on these boards. I'm a music lover too, but playing track 4 off of side 1 of the ___________ album just for the sake of playing it isn't great radio to me. Of course there are some tunes that are spun to death, and others that should see more spins....but there's a reason why lots of those tunes are album cuts...they simply aren't THAT good.

;D johnqdoe is right. Variety is overrated. People don't want it, don't have the time for it. They want to be spoonfed music. Nothing dangerous or edgy. Radio should be a nice safety net. The listeners are asking for predictability. Just listen to any request line or voice mail. You don't have to be brilliant to program a station, it should be fairly formulaic. ::)

I don't work for CC and that is my loss.

TheClearAnswer isn't a consultant, but should be RIGHT NOW!!!!

You guys make good points, but here's my situation. I'm 45 and just as you describe...someone that doesn't have the time to search for song 3, side 2 of Led Zeppelin 4. In fact it was 9 months after I received my XM receiver that I first put it to use. That's how little time I have these days to actually enjoy the radio, but once I made the time, I was moved. There are several channels that I listen to that play the songs I used to put on my personal tapes back in the 70's when we all used to do that. The fact that I can switch between a few stations and basically listen to so many of those "personal tape" songs is incredible to me. So incredible that I NEVER listen to The Arrow any more EVER. I have many friends in my age and socio-economic demo that have experienced the same thing with satellite radio recently. That is why I make the point about the eventual end of terrestrial radio as we know in the not to distant future. Once someone discovers the power, scalability and scope of satellite radio like myself they are converted, usually never to go back. I do listen to talk radio on AM, but as to music on FM, it's all satellite for me.
