How many FM stations can you recieve?

With no particular enhancement going on, I can get about 66 stations with a rooftop antenna and the Sony XDR-F1HD from suburban Rochester NY. Add in a little tropo enhancement and the count goes up by at least 30 pretty easily.

Scott, it looks like translators (that the FCC has thoughtfully licensed over the past few years) now fill frequencies that would have offered up some of your more interesting dx targets. For example, I recall being able to pull in weak to marginal signals on 92.9 (from Buffalo), 93.7 (WBLK Buffalo) and 104.5 (CHUM Toronto) when I was there some 6 or 7 years ago. Seemed like CHUM was the only Toronto signal that I could pick up near Rochester - but it came in surprisingly well in the northern and northwestern parts of the metro. No shot at any of these now.

Right you are - and it just keeps getting worse. That 101.9 Mars Hill translator sits right on top of what used to be fairly reliable reception of CFRC from Kingston, for instance.

The good news is that with a combination of a good directional antenna and some tropo enhancement, I can still get past most of those translators most days to hear WBUF, WBLK, CHUM, etc. Next spring, I'll be installing a better antenna on the roof, and we'll see what it can do about some of the peskier ones.

When I get some time and pull my scraps of paper together, I'll submit a complete bandscan.

I do pick up a number of Scott's catches, from my location on the north side of the St. Lawrence. For example, I've picked up Cortland's 'i100' (while driving just south of Ottawa) on 99.9, where it mixed it up with Burlington VT's 'The Buzz' and Toronto's 'Virgin', before all three were finally over run by Brockville Ontario's UCB repeater. Here, Syracuse's 'Hot 107.9' duels it out Vermont Public Radio, on a regular basis, while CFMX fights a losing battle with Carthage (Watertown) NY's Magic 103.1.

Kingston's CBBK is a local for me and it seems to be the one which I can carry the longest, driving down south of the border. I have (recently) picked up Ottawa's 91.5 CBO, south of Syracuse.
