How well do you hear the following stations at night?

530 RVCI recently battling with Cuba...and at time a 1k tone

Your 1k tone is a TA het - try nulling when you hear it, you might get a TA station!

KFI is presently transmitting from a temporary shorter antenna with 25 kw. That's been the case since their tx tower was hit by an airplane a couple of years ago. If they ever can get their new tower constructed (and they recently suffered a setback), then you may have a shot at hearing them on an east coast early winter morning. Until then, it's pretty doubtful.

I think while the tower upgrade is in process, KFI made a temporary move to an old stick closer to LA and supposedly they are now all the way down to 14kw (ND?). With the recent setback its gonna be a while before they're back to 50kw. In south Orange County CA where I live, their signal is now noticably weaker.

When I was a kid living in Central Jersey, I remember hearing KFI late at night (the Cuban station had not yet upped their power). My brother and I heard them and recorded on a RTR a tape of a commercial for Nixon/Lodge before the '60 Presidential election followed by a station ID. I heard KFI now and then usually in the winter throughout the early-mid 60s. I even heard them in April doing a Dodgers game with Vin Scully doing PBP.

from south Orange County, CA about 50 miles southeast of downtown LA...

530 RVCI - never

640 KFI - see my post above

730 XEX - once in a while ... now with IBOC hash from 720 KDWN Las Vegas and 740 KCBs-AM its near impossible to hear much on 730 AM

750 WSB - never

760 WJR - never

850 KOA - usually clear as a bell

870 WWL - in wintertime regularly can be heard underneath KRLA and sometimes over them

880 WCBS - never - station from central Calif coast comes in

890 WLS - never - St George Utah dominates at night

1000 KOMO - regularly but not real clear

1110 KFAB - never - Radio Disney comes in KDIS and other stations interfering but not KFAB

I ususally get a weak WWL in mass but have been getting a station on 870 from the Finger lakes-Cortland area. Didn't listen long enough to ID it but numerous "local" spots.

QTH Owensboro, KY

530 RVCI-I've noticed more from Canada and a TIS thirty miles away
640 KFI-Have tried for many years, too much on the frequency these days
730 XEX-Never
750 WSB-Constant
760 WJR-Constant
850 KOA-Moderate to occasionally strong 840 IBUZ reeks more havoc
870 WWL-Constant
880 WCBS-Constant
890 WLS-Constant but not as strong as it once was
1000 KOMO-WMVP wins
1110 KFAB-Before Pattern Change

890 WLS - never - St George Utah dominates at night

I've been travelling to So-Cal regularly on business for over 25 years. My experience is pretty much the same as yours. However, in the early eighties, before St. George Utah went on the air (or stayed on all night....I forget which), WLS was semi-regular in Orange and San Diego counties on 890.

Location: El Cajon, Calif
Radio used: Panasonic RQ-SW10 or RQ-SW20 (identical tuners, differ in other features very slightly)
Antenna (sometimes) - Select-A-Tenna (if not specified, antenna is not used/required)

530 RVCI - requires SAT to even hear a HINT of ANYthing on the channel, and I have yet to get a positive ID. Probably a jumble of TIS's though.
640 KFI - a semi-local 24/7
730 XEX - I may have heard it occasionally, but then it's likely competed with by one in Ensenada, Baja
750 WSB - never heard it. Obliterated by stronger-than-city-grade local on 760
760 WJR - local on same channel about 7-8 miles away
850 KOA - a regular most nights. Stepped on by local 860 XEMO some though
870 WWL - rare but I have heard it. Usually it's KRLA (which can be faintly heard in the daytime), and is stepped on by XEMO
880 WCBS - never heard it. Usually KRVN Lexington, NB, or something else that I have yet to ID.
890 WLS - Dominated by KDXU St George (by comparison - KDXU isn't all that strong)
1000 KOMO - battles with a local, but definitely ID'able
1110 KFAB - have heard once or twice, but usually is dominated (but not strong) by KDIS

location south of Pittsburgh, PA..

530 - on occasion, buried under a lot of noise from WWCS 540, Canonsburg, PA
640 - never
730 - never, I actually get a pretty decent blast of WPIT's post-sundown 25 watt signal
750 - strong catch, nightly
760 - nightly catch with some fade, used to get useable daytime signal before
local station moved from 1530 to 770
850 - never, local WAMO-AM 860 would make it difficult
870 - on occasion, under WAMO. Used to be a regular catch until WAMO
obtained nighttime power boost to 3000 watts.
880 - regular catch, strong
890 - regular and strong
1000 - never, always WMVP Chicago
1110 - never, always WBT Charlotte

From Northeast Missouri:

530 RVCI= Haven't logged what I've heard on 530

640 KFI= Never. My only California catch is 680 KNBR San Francisco (I'm not a "pro", but I enjoy AM DX )

730 XEX= May have heard some Spanish there at night, but never logged it. During the day, KWRE Warrenton, MO plays some of the earliest Country music still heard on radio (Hank Sr., Lefty Frizell, etc.)

750 WSB= Pretty reliable, sometimes a fader, CHWO Toronto at 740 crowds it pretty heavily at times.

760 WJR= Probably the strongest of this group.

850 KOA= Not as strong as it used to be, but usually listenable. In the 80's I sometimes listened to Alan Berg, who I believe was murdered

870 WWL= Not the blowtorch it once was by a longshot, but usually there when I try. This one sparked my interest in DX, thirty years ago. During & after Katrina, I listened quite a bit.

880 WCBS= Not srong at all, but usually there.

890 WLS= Fair in the daytime, iffy at night.

1000 KOMO= Doubtful. Never logged it anyway. WMVP is hit & miss.

1110 KFAB= Get a very weak daytime signal (I'm at the eastern extent of their daytime fringe line), has been fairly strong at sunset before pattern change....

League City, Texas

530 RVCI-Drifts in every night, sometimes blasting.
640 KFI-Never heard it here. It was a local in Vegas when I visited right about this time two years ago.
730 XEX-Every night, but suffers in part of Houston under KTRH slop.
750 WSB-In this part of metro Houston, almost inaudible because KTRH sends 100K or so ERP this way and there's a ton of slop.
760 WJR-Barely.
850 KOA-Sometimes, depending on how much it overrides the local 850.
870 WWL-Day and night. We're close to the Gulf so some of that enhanced groundwave makes it this far.
880 WCBS-Never.
890 WLS-Occasional ... better chance is earlier at night.
1000 KOMO-Never heard it here. Not much can be made out on 1000.
1110 KFAB-Occasional.
