I think while the tower upgrade is in process, KFI made a temporary move to an old stick closer to LA and supposedly they are now all the way down to 14kw (ND?). With the recent setback its gonna be a while before they're back to 50kw. In south Orange County CA where I live, their signal is now noticably weaker.
When I was a kid living in Central Jersey, I remember hearing KFI late at night (the Cuban station had not yet upped their power). My brother and I heard them and recorded on a RTR a tape of a commercial for Nixon/Lodge before the '60 Presidential election followed by a station ID. I heard KFI now and then usually in the winter throughout the early-mid 60s. I even heard them in April doing a Dodgers game with Vin Scully doing PBP.

530 RVCI= Haven't logged what I've heard on 530
640 KFI= Never. My only California catch is 680 KNBR San Francisco (I'm not a "pro", but I enjoy AM DX )
730 XEX= May have heard some Spanish there at night, but never logged it. During the day, KWRE Warrenton, MO plays some of the earliest Country music still heard on radio (Hank Sr., Lefty Frizell, etc.)
750 WSB= Pretty reliable, sometimes a fader, CHWO Toronto at 740 crowds it pretty heavily at times.
760 WJR= Probably the strongest of this group.
850 KOA= Not as strong as it used to be, but usually listenable. In the 80's I sometimes listened to Alan Berg, who I believe was murdered
870 WWL= Not the blowtorch it once was by a longshot, but usually there when I try. This one sparked my interest in DX, thirty years ago. During & after Katrina, I listened quite a bit.
880 WCBS= Not srong at all, but usually there.
890 WLS= Fair in the daytime, iffy at night.
1000 KOMO= Doubtful. Never logged it anyway. WMVP is hit & miss.
1110 KFAB= Get a very weak daytime signal (I'm at the eastern extent of their daytime fringe line), has been fairly strong at sunset before pattern change....
