HUGE jump for The Fan

I remember WHN AM 1050 very well because they were the Mets station (and the Brooklyn Dodgers years before that, though I don't REMEMBER that) and it always frustrated me that I couldn't pick up the Mets broadcast because it wasn't a 50,000 watt station.

I remember in 1987-88 trying desperately trying to pick up WFAN on 1050 to listen to overnight sports talk and aside from one stretch where I swear I heard Steve Somers for one solitary sentence ask "Are you a Pirates fan?" to a caller, I couldn't.

And keep in mind, I used to be patient enough, through all the crackles and pops, to pull in WTAE out of state, miles and miles away from Pittsburgh, on my GE Superradio to listen to Myron Cope and Stan Savran.

I think that's why I've been very slow in the past to agree about sound quality on the radio or AM's sound against FM's on this board. If I could pick up the broadcast and follow the game, I was okay with some static.

But AM 1050 simply would not come in.

Then that day in 1988 Parttimer referenced. WFAN moved to 660. Dave Sims and WNBC's Sportsnight were gone, but what the heck- SPORTS TALK BEYOND MIDNIGHT?!?!!?!

More than a fair trade.

The sixth game of the 1988 National League Championship Series had just been played. The Mets had beaten the Dodgers- the "Hollywood" Dodgers according to Steve Somers. There would be a seventh game.

Talking . . . about who would win the National League pennant . . . ALL NIGHT LONG?!?!?!!?

I quit thinking what the true religion was after that.

Because I'm sure all faiths agree that's what they do in heaven.
