Humbolt

AM 1190 WJPJ is one the air!!! A Palmer Johnson broadcasting station.

I heard a few times them over the last few days. They're playing 70's and 80's oldies, but I haven't heard a live person there yet. I still sounds better than WCTA (who hasn't added anything new since TRN news) so far though.

I listened some more today. They have bumpers that call the station Classics 1190. Still nobody live and no ads, although one bumper said they were "Your home for Viking sports," so they must be planning to carry Humboldt High School football and basketball.

Nobody live and no ads sounds like Humboldt's 740 WIRJ. I mentioned it elsewhere before, but I haven't heard an ad on WIRJ in years. Just a mix of classic country with an automated ID around the top of the hour and over whatever song happens to be playing at the time. I think there may be some Sunday morning programming, but that's about it.

I listened some this weekend while in the area. They're still running "your home for Viking sports" liners. I could be wrong, but isn't this station daytime only?

I didn't realize it until this weekend, but WJPJ and WHDM 98.9 (McKenzie) are running the same "Classic Radio" satellite format. There's some overlap where you can hear both stations.

WKOM FM 101.7 in Columbia and WQKR in Portland also broadcast that same classic hits radio satellite format here in the midstate, but I don't believe that their signals overlap each other. WQKR is AM 1270, but I discovered them on an FM translator by accident while in the area a couple of years ago.

The "Classic Hits Radio" format is actually on WHDM AM 1440 with a simulcast on their FM translator, W255BF, at 98.9. That actually puts the "Classic Hits Radio" satellite format on three stations in the area, including WJPJ in Humboldt.

I discovered this weekend the "Classic Hits Radio" format is also on AM 1000 WRQR in Paris. This puts "Classic Hits Radio" on three AM's and one FM in the West Tennessee area: Paris, McKenzie and Humboldt.

One of the breaks on WJPJ this past weekend had a female with local weather. I also heard TRN news early this morning. There may be some here and there, but I still haven't heard any local commercials. The format is still Classic Hits Radio.

I assume this station is located at Spangler Park in Humboldt where Boyd's WHMT-AM 1190 and WLSZ-FM 105.3 were when he owned them. There was a sign on the door recently that basically said the operator on duty wasn't there for whatever reason, and listed a phone number to call. The number was for Forever Communications in Jackson.

This reminds me of WCTA in nearby Alamo where the station is on, a sign of similar wording is on the door, and no one's around.

Hunbolt

There has been a LOT of discussion about rinky-dink AM stations in small towns here on the Tennessee board lately. It seems to me that for such stations to "make it," they must have one or both of the following:

1) an FM sister station simulcasting that AM station's signal, or at least an FM translator.

and/or

2) a web presence, which of course MUST include streaming.

At any rate, an AM (only) signal, especially in a small town, ain't gonna cut it anymore! ::)

That is the only "smartest" and true statement you have made on this rumor board, but let me correct you on number 1:

1. FM is going down the drain with AM because the youth of America today doesn't listen to radio. They may work now, but 10 years from now, FMs will be dropping like flies, like what has happened to AM.

2. Web Presence and on Line Streaming is the future. There will be a day when there is no AM or FM Stations. Today's Artist are discovered on sites like "You Tube".

Firepoint,

That is the only "Intelligent" and "True Statement" you have made on this rumor board, but let me correct you on number 1:

1. FM is going down the drain with AM because the youth of America today doesn't listen to radio. FM Translators may work now, but many AMs have abused them by turning off or running low power on AM, and just promoting the FM Translator. Ten years from now, FMs will be dropping like flies, like what has happened to AM. The AM Rule is still in effect during the daytime hours, especially for Class "C" and Class "D" Stations. AMs must be on the air, on full power, at least 12 hours per day or what their license calls for, if the AM Station is a "Class D" Daytime Station.

2. Web Presence and on Line Streaming is the future! There will be a day when there is no AM or FM Stations. Today's Artist are discovered on sites like "You Tube".

The FM Band now is so junked up, some AM Stations will not be able to get a FM Translator, especially in the ones in Metro Urban Areas. This is another kick in the rear for FM Translators. The corporations that own the big 50,000 watt signals in the Top 50 Major Markets may not have a chance, and this includes WSM-AM 650. Gaylord should have never sold WSM-FM to Cumulus. I bet they wished they had not ever done it now.

Before I reply to this, let's remind everyone what the rabble rouser said about me:

Firepoint, Don't you have better things to do besides getting on Social Media, sticking your nose and criticizing radio station manager's and owners? You have too much time on your hands, blah, blah, blah....
That was from the VERY FIRST message that the rabble rouser posted here, in direct violation of section 5 (member conduct) subsection 12 of the terms of service of this board:

12. "stalk" or otherwise harass another;
Yet I take some time off from this board, and what does this troll do? He CONTINUES to stalk and harass me! He claims that I "have no life," yet he goes and digs up THREE-YEAR-OLD messages from me to attack!

Firepoint,
That is the only "Intelligent" and "True Statement" you have made on this rumor board,
So you have read all 7000+ messages that I have posted here in the seven years (off and on) that I have been here, and you feel like you can sit in judgement of me? Wow, you really DO need a life! And again, if this is such a "rumor" board, then exactly what the hell have you contributed here? All you have done is stalk and harass me (even when I was not here), so you are nothing but a cyberstalker and a troll.

but let me correct you on number 1:

No shit, sherlock. But I have been OUT of radio now for almost as long as I was ever in radio, so no loss to me. Oh, and remind everyone again how you bragged about being part of Cumulus.

You have been reported to the admins for your willful and deliberate violations of the TOS of this board.

You have it all wrong (sigh), I was not mocking you, but giving you credit for using your head, not your heart. I don't care who you went and reported me to, I kind of chuckled about it. They can read what was said, and it's not bad at all.

"Rabble Rouser" that's funny! I'm laughing! You pointed out some truth and you're blasting me? WOW! Most of my radio listening is On Line, as there is too much congestion on both AM and FM. When was the last time you sat in a new car and looked at the dashboard? It's changing to the point that I can't keep up with what they are doing. BMW is taking CD Players and AM Radio out of their new automobiles.

Being a part of Cumulus, that has nothing to do with this thread. This is the kind of post that I am talking about that you make. You're afraid of something, and there is nothing to fear.

Calm Down, and think about what I have said. What you said doesn't matter today, tomorrow, nor the future. My opinion, get your head out of the 1960s and the 1970s, and bring it to 2015!

Dude, you don't know me at all. Don't pretend that you do. On the one hand, you castigate me for saying the truth about radio, then you basically agree with me.

Doing an increasing amount of my own listening online. Particularly to the wife's ipad. We don't have all the latest technology, but we DO plug that ipad into the car's aux jack when we go on long trips. She has downloaded music, and we listen to stations that carry the programming that we want, at the time that we want to hear it.

Meanwhile, burning my own CDs. Creating my own custom mixes of music. Technology that didn't exist when I was a kid. I used to love to create stuff with the reel-to-reel tape and a razor blade. Could not have ever imagined being able to create custom stuff on my computer right here at home! With software that I bought at Best Buy that anyone who can afford it and knows how to use it can do.

I definitely don't live in the past. If you visited that website that I have in my signature line, you would know that. Although that site itself could stand an update.

O.K. That's enough now. Let's just drop it because this thread is way off topic now. We are adults, not 16 year old teenagers. This thread was all about the Humbolt radio station, the rumors and facts about it the last time I checked.

You (not me) revived this dormant thread, and yesterday was your first mention of the Humboldt station. And yes, it is spelled "Humboldt," not "Humbolt." Not my fault that the OP of this thread misspelled it. I am a west TN native, and even though I am not from there, I still hate to see it misspelled.

Firepoint, Calm Down, Like I said, Calm Down. We are humans, not machines, robots, etc. So what about a misspelling? So what about the Humboldt Station? If you don't own it, then calm down. I have not read this entire thread, but whatever problems they are having, either they will fix it, or it will stay the way it is.

I just was in the FCC's Database. Looks like the calls are WJPJ (as of 6-1-2012) and owned by Palmer Johnson, Inc. So what is the big deal Firepoint? I looked at some of the postings quickly and whatever is going on with them or Johnson, it's none of my business. I know the former owner, Ed Smith. Ed is a nice guy.
