Hurricane blows away from WSAR

Word is that Mike "The Hurricane" Herren is gone from WSAR. The website just lists "WSAR Afternoon Drive."

IF we're all good little boys and girls....and brush our teeth and say our prayers....just maybe he'll STAY gone for good.... ;D.

BUT....with our luck....he's probably talking right now with 1320-WARL about buying time so the show can go on. :p

What are you one of his Facebook friends? LOL

Nope. I'll take you through the steps since you asked. After I read the original post I went to WSAR's website. Found out the station has it's own Facebook page. I looked through their friends list and Herren is on it. So I just clicked on him. Nothing was private.

The claim of being "the number one rated talk show" is absolutely hilarious..does anyone in #177 have enough change in their station couches to even buy the book?

That chick Keri who used to be on did the same thing. Apparently the station subscribes to a book that makes everyone who works there #1.
I'm not even sure what being #1 in Fall River is supposed to mean. The city has Two stations. You could broadcast 4 hours of popcorn popping. When the ratings come out you'll still have a 50/50 chance at being number one.

Good news, I realize it is unfair to discriminate against persons with speech impediments, but, I could not listen, all I could picture was him spitting all over.

Hoping they get a good host calibar of say a Helen or somone on Pro

If I only had the money buy that dump, I would do morning drive myself and give Fall River a heart attack with the programming I would air. I'm just so tired of bland mediocre radio. I would just let loose and it would be something that people would no doubt talk about. How much would that heap of garbage cost me to purchase?

No doubt pissing off advertisers. Last listed price was ~$3M for both stations. That was around 2005.

You might be able to get both for around a million..while they are not marketing the stations hard, its well known the Karams want to sell..its just a matter of when..not if..

Why would advertisers be pissed off? If I'm bringing in incredible ratings don't you think advertisers would be happy? I am sure that if I purchased the station that many of the current listeners and advertisers would jump ship. That would be expected. They may not like the new WSAR. However they are all replaceable. 50 of the current advertisers would be replaced by 100 who would love the new station. 10,000 of the current listeners would be replaced by 25,000 new listeners. It's the same thing that happens whenever a station changes format. It's to be expected. However I would not even be changing the format. I would still keep it TALK. But it would be interesting talk. Exciting talk. All boundaries would be pushed and it would be amazing. Every radio station these days is so bland that Bland has become acceptable. I would change that and bring some personallity back to the dial.

I enjoy Rob Carolyn at 5:45, it is like attending a l class on meterology, that is it.

George has potential. Informed, interesting.

Other than that, well

There are some great Meterologists out there. When I say great, I mean that have a pleasant personality. However Meterology is such an uncertain science that I don't think any one guy is much more accurate than the next guy. Elliot Abrams was always a favorite of mine.

Getting back to WSAR, I would have to clean house. I would want to start with a clean slate. I looked at their schedule and I can't even comprehend that mess. Most of it looks like paid programming. Happy Hec is still there and nobody under 70 is going to cry if he gets fired. I tuned in on a couple of recent mornings and he even sounds like his own show is putting him to sleep.

That whole station needs a major overhaul. No doubt about it.

The last thing I actually bothered to tune in WSAR to listen to was back when Barry Richards (? spelling ?)...was doing a talk show in the late morning / early afternoon.

When they took him out of that role (right-winger banging his head against the stone wall of South Coast liberalism...LOL..), there was nothing else worth listening to.

As for Hec...Nice enough guy....but his kind of show went out of style a very very long time ago. He's soout of step with the times, it's not even funny.

That's what I mean. Nothing personal against the guy, but his show is like traveling in a time capsule back to 1975. There is zero creative energy behind it. He just strolls into work before the sun comes up and does time and temperature checks for 4 hours. Then he goes home. He is essentially a human clock. Zero energy in his delivery and not a single amusing thing about the show. The only possible reason people could like him is because they are used to him. There is nothing else there.

Rush brings in incredible ratings in many markets but there are advertisers still don't want to be on his show. Usually companies with a family-friendly image. As for getting 100 new advertisers who would love the new sound of the station, that is hard to gauge because you haven't said what exactly would replace what's on now (besides "exciting" & talk). Then there's the hubris factor of what you're talking about & I've seen in a lot of stations that are bought by new companies: they assume the people of the town will listen to ANYTHING that is put on the air because they assume listeners won't tune anywhere else. "I KNOW WHAT YOU NEED AND YOU DON'T, SO SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO WHAT I'VE DECIDED YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO!" You're assuming that people of Fall River even want something new. They may be happy with what's on now. They might not want their world rocked.

What people seem to want & expect from their hometown station is hometown talk, hometown news, hometown sports including the high school football, basketball & baseball games which is something they're not going to get anywhere else. WSAR, right now, has local talk on from 5A.M.-Noon (am not sure if they're replaced the 'cane so I don't know about 3-6P.M.) as well as a local news hour from Noon-1P.M. 5 days a week. Then the 1-3 P.M. block is mostly local brokered (the Tony Evans show is missing from Monday 1-3 & I heard an infomercial in that block 2 days ago) but hosted by local folks. Some days, that adds up to 13 hours of programming originating from WSAR's studios that is local in focus. WSAR also currently has local hourly news. How many stations are providing that to their listeners in a small market anymore?

I think there are better stations around to try what you're talking about. 790 comes to mind.

Well WSAR may be mostly local, but when it's all crap programming, WHO is going to listen? I haven't said exactly what I would program on the station for the simple fact that I'm not interested in offering them free ideas. But I can guarantee you that it would get more listeners than what they have now. But it's ok. They are the SAFE radio station. That is a station who would rather play it safe than enter into new unchartered territory. The station in town who will accept mediocre ratings rather than take a chance and double ratings and double revenue. I already know them well enough to realize that they never will leave their own little comfort zone

. The owners of that station are not open to new ideas unless the ideas are theirs! Bottom line is that WSAR will never see my creativity unless somebody extremely open minded buys that place. Someone like ME! But that will never happpen anyway because I don't have 3 Million Dollars to play with. If I did have 3 Million to play with I would probably be playing with it far away in Waikiki anyway.

Somebody's listening! I have worked there twice & the shows have callers. Once on the law program (which aired early on a Tuesday afternoon) we once got 14 calls! The station serves a niche audience & that niche is the population of Fall River.

I can respect not wanting to give out your ideas, especially on a public forum. I've held back mine lest someone try them before I get a chance to do so. As for spending $3M, I'd be sailing the Caribbean & flying to Belize in my own plane just like Jimmy Buffett.
