I declare this the LAST WECK thread ever!

$1.3 million? Wow... forgot it was for that much. Wow...

A new "Breeze" in Buffalo?

WECK (1230) may be ready to dump the three-year-old talk format and return to something closer to the standards format it had featured until early 2006. It was also briefly classic country, but current owner Dick Greene of Culver Communications has been trying live and local talk since March 2008.

Now the Buffalo News says the signs point toward a new standards-focused music format named "The Breeze." The paper quotes PD Brad Riter saying "they're changing their format...talk radio was not cost-effective." Former midday talker Nick Mendola says the ownership offered him a chance to stay on in sales, saying "they didn't want me to do talk any more."

Dick Greene bought 1,000-watt WECK, Cheektowaga for $1.3 million.

WECK ran spots today featuring the voices of Brad Riter, Nick Mendola... and Bill O'Loughlin!

Someone will be working overtime this weekend to re-record those ads.

Who will do the voicework? I assume either Tom Donahue or Christina Abt (?) or Frank Miller.

Uh Oh! Could this be a possible "headache" for Dick Greene and Tom Schuh as they launch the "Buffalo Breeze" on the airwaves? I don't think Dick needs the distraction and cost of a copyright infringement legal challenge at this point in his life.
??? (good question)

Radioguybackwards....good point! We'll see...keeping in mind that Larry Levite is a player in the Breeze publication...a veteran radio guy!

On the other hand....do we see a marketing partnership here...?

Like you say...time will tell.

That's all

HDBG, you seem to be confused. The "Buffalo Breeze" publication is owned by a company out of Sydney, Australia according to their website. Levite owns the "Buffalo SPREE".

1) There won't be any Coldplay (at least at first :)
Rather than have me try and explain what it is, people should listen and decide for themselves. My hope is that there will be significant listener input, and that will help determine where we go musically. A new website will be a key part of that. It will launch shortly after the station goes live.

Is there a new web address? I just checked www.weck1230.com a few minutes ago and I didn't hear a music stream at all. Sounds like sportstalk (ESPN?) to me. Why not put the music stream up even though the website is not ready? It can't be that difficult. I'd like to hear what everyone within the signal is hearing.

Tom, I'm confused and can't hear the station in the Southern Tier. Are you saying the Yankees are on the air tonight and you haven't had time to set up the separate music stream in the event the Yankees are playing so you're streaming the sportstalk programming instead?

You are correct. :'( My bad...i will lick my wounds and move on.

That's it in a nutshell :)

The only niche I see as viable for WECK is "real oldies" - the rock & roll era from '55 to '69, focused on the pop side of the music aisle. Resurrect a "legend" or two via VT, and you might have something - even on AM. I'd tweak the processing to go as broadband as possible, and you might draw a fly or two.
With WJJL already doing a "Graffiti-Gold" format, wouldn't this be suicidal? I've already mentioned in a separate thread here Ideas which might work: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=194235.20

Something else worth considering is to implement alternative sources of income for the station, including accepting donations.

You may be on to something......

How about:
For a $10 donation, WECK will play an hour of YOUR selections!
For a $20 donation, WECK will incorporate your name into the positioning statements every break!
For a $50 donation, WECK will be named after YOU for a day! (It's Bev 1230)
And for a $100 donation, you decide the format for a day, AND Mr. Greene will mow your lawn or shovel your driveway, depending on the time of year.

This is ratings-proof fellas!
