I miss WCAU when it was CBS!

Even *I* remember the affiliation switch on WCAU 10!! I remember seeing Willard on the next morning or something and thinking wow, this is different.

It was really nothing. The people who watched 3's news watched it, the people who watched 10's news watched it and those who wanted to watch CBS watched 3 and those who wanted to watch NBC watched 10. Big freaking deal as it is so damn simple even a caveman could figure it out.

Oh, I never said it wasn't simple and Im not sure anyone else here meant to imply it wasnt. I cant beleive i remember it tho, I was only 11 when i lived in the area.

I remember both flips. 10 did a big blowout "special" newscast to welcome the programming from NBC. 3, by contrast, was just veteran booth announcer stating that, after X amount of years, KYW-TV would become a CBS station. No hype, no special....just a voiceover and into CBS programming.

And....after the Dan Rather incident(s) and the skunk abortion known as their so-called morning block, I'd bet KYW-TV still wishes they were NBC.

I remember that pseudo newscast. Talk about setting the tone for what was to come.

As for KYW, no doubt their 9-11 lineup leaves them cold, but on balance, they may have moved up a bit in daytime with the swap. Young and the Resltess and Bold and the Beautiful cream any soaps NBC has on the air, and Price is Right is a franchise unto itself.

At the time of the swap, primetime was a huge loss for KYW, but what a difference a decade makes. Comparatively, I'd be much happeir as a CBS station now than an NBC affiliate. Give it a few more years and it'll all change again.

Can anyone describe the technical mechanics of the switch?

Also, I remember that KYW really didn't do any branding changes, but WCAU did. I don't remember exactly since I was in Central Jersey at the time and got both New York and Philadelphia and mainly watched New York, but thought it was neat that the two stations were going to switch!

I don't recall much in the way of mechanics being needed at 1 a.m. (after SNL ended on KYW). Channel 3 simply ran a short message that they were the new CBS station, while channel 10 introduced their new name with a fake 1 a.m. newscast. Since no network programming would air for another 6 or 7 hours, everything else seemed pretty much the same as it would normally be in the dead of the night.

Does anyone have "airchecks" of these switch overs, special announcements, newscasts, etc

I think the message KYW-TV aired was KYW-3 is now your CBS station? KYW-TV did lead their newscasts on that Saturday night 9/9/95 a few hours before the switch to CBS with the big switch and showing pictures of their new satellite for CBS programs being installed on the roof of the 5th and market studios. BTW the last CBS program aired on channel 10 was coverage of the US open correct and the last NBC prime-time program at 10 PM that KYW-TV would ever air was a rerun of "A Comedy Salute to Andy Kaufman" correct? Someone should post the TV listings from that day

The Switch happened on Sunday September 10th, 1995 at 1 AM EDT. A day that changed Philadelphia TV.

Later that morning, at 9 am IIRC, I caught WCAU's rebroadcast of that fake "newscast", having not stayed up to catch the original. The "explosion" of WCAU's "doughnut" CBS' logo, with the particles reassembling into NBC 10's logo, will stay in my brain unto the grave.
