I see why 13 WHAM is #1 in Rochester

Because the viewers are just like Wegmans. Conservative and middle class. 13 caters to the suburbs and it is no wonder why they are located in Henrietta. They have a large suburban audience. Channel 10 may be #2, but they have better news, better breaking stories, better investigation reports, and has a better urban feel. Channel 10 caters to the city, even channel 8 caters to urban contemporary and they break stories before 13 does. 13 does have excellent talent, but they don't have the best news.....10 does. I rememeber a while back, 10 broke a story at 5:59pm telling viewers that an employee at U Need A Tire on Hudson Ave. was killed after a car fell on him, and I turned to 13 the same time and they were talking about some unimportant story that was happening in the suburbs. So, if you want ROCHESTER breaking news up to the minute, turn to 10 and 8, don't turn to 13, becaus ethey will tell you what's going on in the outskirts adn rural areas.

If you haven't noticed, there's been a thing called "urban sprawl" going on for years. The bulk of your "money demo" population doesn't live in the city anymore. They live in the suburbs. People who live in the suburbs get sick of hearing about petty stabbings, drug deals gone bad, and other "low class" crimes in the ghetto. They're more interested in hearing about wacky zoning regulations, new strip malls or silly urban "nightmares" like the woman who used to whine about the 490 construction in her backyard at all hours of the night.

Stations like WHAM may not be getting every nitty-gritty story or getting it first, but they're catering to the "money demo" audience of people who watch often, and have enough disposable income to attract advertising revenue.

You're right though... it should be expected that WHEC and WROC are first on the scene to any breaking news within the city, since their studios are actually located in the city. WHAM has a disadvantage on any spot news simply because of their location. Unless they've already got a crew who happens to be nearby, they've got a 10-15 minute commute just getting from the station to the city.

Thank you for starting this debate.

I think 10's news is like the sound version of a police blotter. A lot of meaningless crime and court stories.

13 holds its own in terms of breaking relevant stories. Spot news is not their strength, but again, it's not always interesting.

I will say this, ever since 10 lost Crimestoppers to 13 years ago, they have slipped. 10 showcased Crimestoppers the best, because they use to do a reenactment of what went on a short time before. WHEC should have never lost that, that was their profile, not 13's. WHAM does not showcase Crimestoppers properly. Don Alhart just tells what went on. I think 10 needs to get it back and do what they used to do back in the day. and reclaim the #1 spot in Rochester.

I don't know all the "inside politics" behind this, but why did 10 "lose" Crimestoppers to 13?

First of all, there must be a reason why WHEC either gave it up, or had it taken away.

Second of all, is it just me, or is it silly that only ONE station can promote Crimestoppers? (By the wording of your last post, I get the impression this is an "exclusive" thing.) Shouldn't stopping crime be something ALL media outlets try to help with?

Lastly, re-enactments are cheesy. They don't belong on local news. Show me real surveillance video or just describe it. Re-enactments belong in cable reruns of Unsolved Mysteries or Rescue 911. How many TV newsrooms in this country can even afford to hire writers, actors and a production crew to stage re-enactments? Maybe 10 or 15 years ago, when some local TV stations were still making money hand over fist. But not anymore. Too much corporate belt-tightening, and too much revenue competition from cable.

Not to sound sarcastic but perhaps the reason WHAM TV is number one in the Rochester market is not because of its news coverage but that their competitors offer less information. The truth be known I've given up watching local television news because out of a 1/2 hour newscast, about 5 to 7 minutes are allocated for news, while the rest of the time focuses on the weather, sports, and obnoxious commercials featuring lawyers or car dealers. I do watch the BBC on my PBS station (that will shock ALW I'm sure ;D) plus get most of my news from the internet. I guess my idea of "news" does not include the latest homicide in the city; vacant house fires; or someone in a nursing home celebrating their 100th birthday (God Bless Them).

Interesting perspective there. I do have to say I loathe Wegemans though, especially after the diseased eggs incident.

I watch WHEC more than any of the other stations, but I do like Don Alhart. In fact he is the only reason I watch 13 at all. Same with 8 and Maureen McGuire. I find both to be talented, repestable anchors whose personas often draw me into viewing. I'm also curious of how well R News does in the ratings too. I like their operation and running news 24/7 is a plus, something the traditional three stations are forced to compete with, especially I suppose if something big occurs overnight.

But more than often I too find myself watching the BBC for world and national news over US networks. As for local news, I'd have to say the best newscasts in Rocheseter are found not on TV, but on WHAM 1180 AM.

WHAM 1180 which gets 75% of its news from 13. Seriously.

Tell me why you watch WHEC more than the other local stations?
