I sure do miss WCRY Macon's Beautiful Music Station

That was one of the best radio stations in Macon.I listened to it day and night until their departure in 1980.Not only did this beautiful music station play the most beautiful music I ever heard they also had an extensive library of music and you didn't here the same song for 6 months or more.I remember some of the radio personalities that use to work for this station Tom Meede and Hal Sutton. The station had very few commercials. The first time I found this station in 1975 was when I heard it as background music on channel 13 were they had the clocks going up and down. Then I tuned to 107.9 and found it on the FM dial.I sure wish they would bring this format back on the FM dial.I listen to beautiful music now on XM's Escape channel 78 and dish 973 but I'd still listen to WCRY if it would come back.I beleive road rage instances can be blamed on the elimination of beautiful music from FM radio.Unless you have Xm or your own b/ez cds or have it on an ipod like I do you can't hear it anymore.People on the road have no way to relax.I hate these radio corporations that got this music off of FM Cumulus Media,Clear Channel etc.In the 70s there were other great b/ez stations that played like WCRY such as WJCL(Savannah)WPCH(Atlanta)WGPC(Albuny)and WDEF(Chattanooga TN)Even the beautiful music channel Id jingles were relaxing on these stations.Long Live Beautiful Music may it make a return to the FM dial.

To be fair, it was when Ben Porter owned WCRY that the beautiful music format went away for the Soft AC EZ Hits 108. That station of course then went to Z108 while Skip Holmes was still there back around 1987. I remember it was after I left Z106 in Fort Valley for 99WAYS and getting a phone call about how first I took the Top 9 at 9 with me to Macon, "now WPEZ took our name." It was a few months later that WQBZ became Q106. It wasn't until 2005 before Cumulus bought WPEZ, after US Broadcasting bought in during the mid 90's. I was there 1998-2005 and was the last voice on Z108, first on the final switch to Z93.7. (And I didn't aircheck it! What a waste.)

I remember the beautiful music format very well. It was in all the dentists offices in Middle Georgia, including mine. I was getting my first filling when I hear Billy Joel's Piano Man played for what seemed like the tenth time that day. And for many of us under 50, that WCRY meant, after going to the dentist, We CRYed.

The closest thing you have around here is the Adult Standards Format on WNNG-AM 1350. With the current demographics in the Middle Georgia area and the lack of advertiser support for anything other than Country or Urban, then the others, I just don't see the format's return. I think we talked about this before, not sure.

By the way, Tom and Hal are doing fine with Register Communications and helping to keep my sanity when one of my Phantoms go crazy. See y'all on 96.7 in the morning!

I can't argue with that. Hal Sutton and Thom Meade are both at Register Data Systems / WPGA. Fantastic deliveries and voice for that station. A class act. In a way, I have Jay Childs and WCRY to thank for my job. He was hired as the first "automated assist" morning man for that station by Fred Newton who later gave me the same privilege at WMAZ-FM.

Wow. WCRY. I haven't heard those calls since they were last assigned to a now dark radio station in Fuquay-Varina, N.C. Yes, Fuquay-Varina is a real town, but i digress...
I remember listening to WCRY when it was a daytime only AM station on 900 kc. In fact, I have a tape of the final sign off, on AM, voiced by Johnny Fambro. Fambro gave
the standard sign off, never once mentioning that WCRY wasn't coming back.

Not a problem. We can transfer it to CD for you and keep a copy for our archives. Send it to the address on our web site and THANKS!
