Hot 95.7 rates really well in Houston - but it is a role played right now by KHKS in Dallas. But Houston's KRBE also rates well - and could be niche in Dallas. KRBE concentrates on top-40 and omits most hip-hop, hot 95.7 plays top 40 and hip-hop with a more limited playlist. So a true top-40 like KRBE might do well in Dallas by omitting most hip-hop.

But Dallas will probably get another boring sports station (how many friggin' frequencies does the ticket need, anyway???) or another Spanish language or another country bumpkin. Christian rock wouldn't fly because there is already Power-FM filling that niche.

I gotta admit... I am listening to www.i106hits.com right now and the music is pretty good...

However, it is kinda odd that they signed on about two months ago and they are still running jockless. Sort of Top 40/CHR JACK style.

and that list is good????? I would rather have my ears ripped off reseviour dogs style than listen to that crap. Quality Rock would work we weren't so overloaded with dumbass people who can't tell an electrical cord from Gm7th
Everytime since 93.3 went to quality, I would hear a great song that you never hear on these Rhythmic, CHR, Top 40, BS stations. AAA should work it Dallas.. but oh well
Checkers sells better than Chess

Well is not going to work on 93.3, maybe 91.7.

LOL

Wait until you have a board operator at an oldies station trying to put all of those titles to oldies music while making up a story line and scenarios at the same time.

I just don't see Dallas supporting a third oldies station. There is KLUV, and KPMZ. There is no room for another. Houston needs oldies - if they want to put an oldies station somewhere.

Let's make it perfectly clear - KRBE is not a true Top 40 - it's an Adult leaning CHR, as are most Cumulus-owned CHRs. KRBE thankfully hasn't gotten as Adult sounding as sister station Q-100 in Atlanta, but still. KRBE is late on records (especially Rhythmic hits) and leans on a lot of Recurrents. In fact, Cumulus CHRs are known throughout the industry to be very vanilla. This is 2009 and a CHR shouldnt be afraid to touch Hip Hop and Rhythmic hits yet that's exactly the mentality of most Cumulus CHRs thanks to Jan Jaffries. Females 18-34 who listen to CHR radio love the Rhythmic stuff, including Hip Hop. Hot 95.7 is much more of a true Top 40, targetting 18-34 year olds.
If KLIF were still a CHR today it would definitely play the big Hip Hop hits. Want proof? WAPE in Jacksonville and KDWB Minneapolis have both been around for over 40 years doing CHR. Neither of them have a problem playing Rhythmic titles.

Let's take a look at the hottest records in America:
http://www.billboard.com/#/charts/hot-100

Now let's take a look at the hottest records on CHR/Pop radio:
http://charts.bdsradio.com/bdsradiocharts/charts.aspx?formatid=1

Hot 95.7 Houston clearly plays more of the big titles, and is more relevant to the format.

As for Dallas, KHKS 106.1 Kiss FM is one of the best sounding CHR/Pop stations in the country. Great jocks, great music mix, etc. It will be VERY hard for Cumulus to come in and try to go up against them, especially since Cumulus CHR/Pop stations are never customized for their markets, and the music mix leaves a lot to be desired. No, the only chance Cumulus has here is to actually lean Rhythmic by either launching a true Rhythmic CHR, or with a Rhythmic leaning CHR/Pop station. Hot 92 Harrisburg and 95.7 The Vibe Kansas City are both owned by Cumulus and both are Rhythmic leaning CHR/Pop outlets. They're reminiscent of what 106.1 Kiss FM sounded like in the 90s, and as you may recall KHKS was very successful back then.
Also, a talk intensive CHR morning show going up against Kidd Kraddick on his home turf won't likely yield much success, unless a lot of resources and a big budget are put in place. So a music intensive Rhythmic leaning CHR/Pop outlet ala 97.1 Amp Radio Los Angeles should be the way to go, if this new station really wishes to lure 18-34 year olds.

Wouldn't that be going after K104 or The Beat....

K-104 and 97.9 The Beat play Hip Hop but are geared at Dallas's large African American audience. Urban stations are usually earlier on records than Rhythmic stations, and will also play certain slow jams that CHRs and Rhythmics will shy away from.
Rhythmic CHRs on the other hand, even those that lean almost exclusively on R&B and Hip Hop, tend to target first and foremost Hispanics or whites.
Most Rhythmic CHRs will also play artists like Lady Gaga, which Urban stations won't play. Rhythmic leaning CHR/Pop stations will usually play big crossover Pop/Rock titles by the likes of Taylor Swift, 3 Oh! 3, Pink, or All American Rejects.
A good example of a true Top 40? That's easy - local station 106.1 Kiss FM, or a station like Z-100 New York.
Adult leaning CHR? 104 KRBE Houston or Star 94 Atlanta.

Okay.

I am always amused by "predictions", especially when they are so obvious by their nature. Almost as though your attention must be getting called away from something else. Any prognostications on the last song of the hour on artists' specials? Just musing and having some fun with it. If the last song of the hour is "Maneater", by Hall and Oates, will it really mean "Sweet Virginia" by the Rolling Stones somewhere else come the first of the week?

KRBE is an adult top 40... but in Women 25-54, they are around 5th, while KKHH is around 15th. As a sales and business proposition, KRBE adjusted when the PPM tests began in Houston 4 years ago, and was very successful in doing the right thing with the format. As a result, they bill more than double what KKHH does.

David, KRBE is a heritage station. If KRBE had debuted around the same time as Hot 95.7 their ratings, and especially their revenues, would likely not be as high.
I think Hot 95.7 has already acheived a lot for the amount of time it's been on the air.

LOL! Actually ended up 5 for 8... Got Lady Gaga too just not the right song. Miley Cyrus and Jesse McCartney??? Seriously???

Thank you CHRles. Some of these folks have more of a fear of hip hop than a hate.

In all honesty..they haven't had a station to rival Kiss 106.1 FM in awhile. Out of all the radio stations they have had in this market...Kiss FM has pretty much been the only station that plays the kind of music that i93.3 is now playing.

In the Dallas/Ft Worth area...there are 2 main genres of people. Urban and Hispanic. Thats why Urban and Spanish radio stations are always in the top 3 in arbitron here.

But what will make i93.3 successful in my opinion is if they go one step beyond Kiss FM and play not just the songs that Kiss plays now...but even do a little "retro" Urban music..such as in playing the songs that Kiss FM used to play 3 or 5 years ago. Cause if they just become an exact copy of Kiss FM...most of the audience that listen to Kiss now won't change their preset buttons unless they happen across i93.3 FM and after listening to a Black Eyed Peas song of Boom Boom Pow...then they play like "Toxic" by Brittney Spears and the listener would say..."Oh..I haven't heard this song in awhile."

That in my opinion will get some of the audience that listens to Kiss FM now to switch over to i93.3 FM just because they would play the songs that Kiss FM just stopped playing.
