If You Love Radio Don't Watch This!!!!!

Maybe not too disturbing. Radio might be better off without the big profit takers. Radio makes money just not enough to keep the big boys happy.

It's amazing when you look at it. They have eliminated staff by automation and should be seeing the economies of spreading that smaller staff across several stations. One or two engineers for example do the work of 7 or 8. Nights are syndicated, overnight is automated, and mid days are voice tracked.

Sales is not only selling the radio stations but also they are selling advertising on the stations' web sites. There are commercials on 24 hours a day. Commercial loads durning the day can be as much as 16 units an hour on a music station, probably even more on a news talk station.

Maybe what we will see is more realistic prices for stations and the return of smaller group and mom and pop operators.

Watched the clip and my thoughts lean toward him being right.

Large cororporate owners taking all the profits from radio for shareholders will not work anymore. It is sucking the life out of radio.

To me, Radio is at it's best with smaller groups, responsible to themselves and using profits for... the boss' pocket and his new car every year(it IS thier business) ...equipment and facilities ... promotion and marketing ... and a liveable salary for the employees (which has been done). This is what makes for good radio.

Don't give the money a chance to go to 'shareholders', who always want more. Put it back in the stations that could serve the local audience. If people want to invest in radio, let them buy a station.

When movies were invented, they said radio was dead.
When movies got sound, they said radio was dead.
When TV came around, they said radio was dead.
When 8-tracks and Cassettes came around, they said radio was dead.
When MTV arrived, they said radio was dead.
When I-pods and P2P came, they said radio was dead.
When satellite radio showed up, they said radio was dead.
When mega-corporations took over, they said radio was dead.

Yoo-hoo, don't look now but RADIO IS STILL HERE.

thanx for letting me vent among friends.

I understand this guy's syndication deal was either canceled or didn't get off the ground and he was ticked...so it appears he may have had an agenda. Meanwhile radio is alive and very well in many small towns around America.

I guess it depends on your definition of alive and well. Many small towns have stations that are shadows of what they once were. These stations have a live morning show and are "on the bird" the rest of the day.

Smaller stations are "on the bird" because that's what they must do to keep costs down so they can continue operating as "stand alone" stations. That's what the big corporations have done to our industry. Things will never be as they once were, but I have hopes that the big corporations are going to divest themselves of many properties and those properties will once again be owned by local companies and we will continue to have stations with local content. I agree with Fingar. Radio is not dead. I believe as long as there are local business owners there will be a need for smaller stations that they can afford to buy advertising on. I think the local content of the smaller stations will become popular again as people have a desire to have their stations involved in their community. Someone once told me that everything is cyclical and I believe that is true.
