Iger floats possibility of Disney selling ABC

Does Iger have an ego issue or something? Why sell off ABC/ESPN, when we see the success Fox is having. Disney needs to sell off cable channels
What does his ego have to do with wanting to shed underperforming divisions? Or are you saying if Disney turned ESPN into a right-wing cable network everything would be better?
What a bizarre concept either way.

Not one, huh?

All of late night is in the tank compared to nine years ago (I'm talking about before the strike---they're all in reruns now). If Fallon had been markedly worse than the rest of the pack, he wouldn't still be there.
NBC is pretty cautious about that type of move after the 2009 Tonight Show fiasco. Younger people generally stream rather than watch OTA talk shows, and generally Fallon gets an older audience nowadays. It is hard to think in hypotheticals, but Jay might have weathered the storm better. (Until he chose to retire, of course, which might have already been.)

In this era, when seeing how “new Fox” became successful, they sold off many of their cable nets and added more live sports to OTA.
What are you talking about? What 'new' Fox? Fox Sports still have several cable sports channels including FS1, FS2, and an entire sports division. And OTA means Over The Air. Not sure what you mean about adding more sports to just Over The Air.
Fox is raking in money, while laughing and learning from others’ mistakes in the streaming race.
What division of Fox? O&O stations? Cable news? Business? Are you just a big Fox News fan, and that's why you sing their praises?
Why not protect ABC by using the formula Fox is using.
So Professor, what's that formula exactly?
ABC is partnered with the biggest brand in sports with tons of live sports rights.
Really? What sports does ABC have exclusivity with? NBC has the Olympics, Superbowl in their turn, PGA, and Thursday Night Football.
incredibly foolish to even threaten to cast away ABC
Really? Why?

Comcast interested in owning part of ESPN? A Bank of America pundit thinks so:

What does his ego have to do with wanting to shed underperforming divisions? Or are you saying if Disney turned ESPN into a right-wing cable network everything would be better?

I mentioned nothing close to that. Why dump ABC when we see the success fox is having with live sports, and Disney has the advantage of having espn in their portfolio. His comments on dumping abc are beyond shortsighted

I’m not going to repeat everything I just said. You’re entitled to your opinion. But you assuming I’m right wing, based off what I said is truly nonsense

Fallon's ratings have exceeded Jay's several times. The reason Fallon is off the air is due to the writer's strike. Perhaps you heard of it?
That was early on. He did well until 2017 or so during the Trump years, when he fell to 3rd place among the major hosts who were a lot more outspoken. My point is probably moot though, as Jay was on the record saying he is glad to be out of late night in this political climate, so he would have been gone by now anyway.

Because rights fees for sports teams have grown out of control the past several years. That's why several RSN's are in serious financial trouble because ad revenue has been declining while teams/leagues are upping the rights rates to cover the increases in player salaries. At some point, the rights fees exceed any revenue available from carrying games.
His comments on dumping abc are beyond shortsighted
But you haven't explained why.

I actually work in tv and have for years and know and experienced more than you ever have
Somehow I doubt that. Because the things you say would indicate otherwise. Either that or you are in a lower-level maintenance role that's apart from the business perspective because you sure don't seem like you know much about the business.

Actually I’ve been a main news anchor/sports director for a few years now in my market. What do you do for a living?

OTA TV has way more life than we think. We’re now seeing pro sports franchises return to OTA sooner than any of us imagined. Just because local tv news shares are down from 20-30 years ago doesn’t mean the entire station is. Networks need to follow suit with what Fox is doing. They know how financially beneficial it’s been for Fox. No network head will ever admit, even internally, because their egos won’t allow it. Airing select Monday Night Football games on abc is a start. Now that we’re only premiering new shows on streaming apps, what else could you fill the time with? Have you seen what Nexstar is turning the CW into?
So to be clear, you have more knowledge and insight than the executives of their own companies. Ok...um, sure.

It comes off more like somewhat delusional Fox cheerleading than anything with all of these posts.

Local TV stations in small and medium markets get as much as 50% of their revenue from cable carriage fees. With the decline in cable subscriptions, that will decline. Many stations do not have operating margins wide enough to sustain a big loss in those fees.
