They're already digitized and available from the estate of the guy who recorded them in the first place, the late Mike Schweizer. They've been at archive.org for almost five years:
I don't think so. While on paper it looks like a downgrade, in reality San Bruno-located sticks put a better signal into San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties -- which have the highest Bay Area income levels.
Another possible issue at Sutro: tower rent. Back in 1973 when the tower was built, 103.7 was KGO-FM, co-owned with one of the four TV stations that jointly own the tower. So it was probably getting the antenna space for free. Now, decades later, with the FM and TV under different ownership, the FM was probably being charged steep tower rent. Therefore, iHeart may have been able to save a huge chunk of change by moving 103.7 onto a San Bruno tower it was already leasing for another iHeart stick. Just a theory. If any of the radio pro's on this board think I'm correct, your compliments are welcome :=)
I seem to remember a time I would be listening to 102.5 KDON/Monterey driving north, go through the Caldecott Tunnel in the east bay, then upon coming out of the tunnel I'd be hearing KSFM 102.5. Not sure if all the noise of the FM dial now still offers that opportunity or not.
