iHeart takes over 880 WZAB, will air Black Information Network

Interesting. I used to listen to that station a bit when it was known as "880 The Biz" and was supposedly a "business talk" format. They had a pretty horrible local morning show featuring a husband/wife team who initially started with a weekend "eat & critique" food show on another AM station and somehow got a morning gig, but to describe it as amateurish would be a compliment IMO. Following that, the rest of the day was a mixed bag of Bloomberg news and radio programs, and lots of 30 minute or hour-long infomercials for stock trading programs, estate planning services and the like. There were some interesting local programs in the afternoon, one hosted by a real estate financier, but it was really an eclectic mix. One hour it'd be a group that would broadcast from different businesses in the Miami area weekly (while making lots of exaggerated claims in an effort to over hype and sell the businesses they were broadcasting from), to a right-wing conspiracy theorist to a pro-marijuana legalization show to another program that highlighted police, dispatchers and public safety. The weekend was a mix of infomercials, snake oil salesmen hawking vitamins and supplements and even a Caribbean-themed music program. Many programs would be rebroadcast multiple times.

I used to tune in every once in a while just to see what was airing and really enjoyed some of the local programs, as they were an unpolished throwback to radio basics...Just a host, an occasional guest, maybe some callers if they were really lucky, and sometimes cheesy bumper music going in and out of breaks. It was owned by Salem Media back then - Immaculate Heart took ownership just a bit more than a year ago in July, 2019.

I remember being curious about it when I saw there was a new station being built on 880 but when it signed on there wasn't really anything there to hold my attention. I knew a couple of people who were casual stock investors and used to listen to Bloomberg.

I've checked out the station a few times since seeing this post. It seems to be an "all news all the time" network, or at least that's been the format each time I happened to tune in, with a focus on stories and content that impact the black community. It'll be interesting to see how the station and indeed the network, fare longer-term. Here's a link to the Black Information Network site: https://www.binnews.com

The Wikipedia page for that station may need updating.. It lists the owner as Immaculate Heart Media and the operator as IHeart. The opening paragraph of the entry also states "WZAB (880 AM) is a radio station licensed to Sweetwater, Florida. WZAB is owned by Immaculate Heart Media, Inc. and airs a black-oriented news format as an affiliate of the Black Information Network." with no mention of IHeart being the new owner (which I thought was the case?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WZAB

The sale/swap between iHeart and Immaculate Heart is pending FCC approval. If the FCC takes its customary time of about 60 days to process the forms, iHeart would become the licensee some time in early December.

After tuning in several times to this station just to give a listen after it switched to carrying the "Black Information Network" programming, I'll truly be interested to see how long it lasts, at least in its current format. IMO the issue is that there is really nothing entertaining about it and really no incentive to listen for more than several minutes at most. There's no music, no talk shows, no interaction with callers, etc. It's all news, all the time. News stories seem to be repeated quite often, and this past weekend with so much going on and newsworthy (Covid-related stories including the initial rollout of the vaccine, the stimulus bill being worked on by congress, the ongoing presidential election saga, upcoming Christmas holiday, etc.) several stories and news items they were running were at least a few days old at that point, and the information outdated and no longer accurate and/or relevant.

940 WINZ was all news from 1976 to 2004 according to wikipedia. i did listen to some when on vacation at some point around 2000

WNWS, NYC dropped those call letters after NIS ended and 790 in Miami picked them up for a few years.
The former programmer of WINZ ran them, maintained the rights to use the NIS sounders, and did.
I think 710 might have been doing something newsical during this timeframe also.

WINZ News Radio ran some unique and interesting formats including NIS and Air America Radio, and BIN might actually be a good fit for them.
