I'm Feeling Nostalgic...

Mac,

One of the best posts I've seen in years...I remember WKXP...it sounded great, but without a good business plan, a good sales manager, and a couple of decent sales people you were doomed. I don't want to build up any egos here.....finding a good sales manager is without a doubt THE HARDEST job to fill at a radio station. Without this along with some decent sales people a station is DOOMED. Ultimately....this is what killed Route 81, for example. As sad as I hate to admit it....everything else is secondary.

Mac Austin couldn't be anymore correct and hit it all, right on the head. You bet, when Mac Austin hired me at WKXP I had no clue as to what I was in for, and at the time Mac hired me, for sake of bragging rights, and tooting my own horn, I had had almost 25 years in radio, most all of which were big money large city radio stations across the country namely my hometown of Miami, Florida.

The point to the above is that, like Mac said, I could see were Fred and Bill (I personally really didn't know either of the guys) basically spared no expense, installed the latest high tech equipment, somewhat all hands off automation both in the control and production rooms that just knocked my socks right OFF, all the big stations I had worked at previously hadn't even seen this technology yet and were still using carts, and CD's, and for Bloomsburg those two Boy's were on the ball, and for small town radio, I was super impressed.

Speaking for Mac somewhat, Mac had the talent and knew where he needed to take the station to make it viable, it had all the ingredients, quality sound and good local coverage, half decent on-air talent, but the lacking the main ingredient as Mac said was, Promotions, and although I was not privy to a lot of WKXPs internal matters, and not there long enough to make any real serious observations, I also believe this to be the stations downfall because nobody in town really knew the station was there, that much I did know. I asked around. Its ashame some stations that really sound good in small town everywhere, because of mismanagement fall by the way side, good sales people, good promotions people are the key and yupper buddy, hard to come by.
