Imus on WBAP?

A left leaning (Bigelow) tea drinking (not tea sippin) scarf wearing drug store cowboy with died hair from Connecticut lets slip a racial slur that shows his true character?

Long ways from the local demographic that you hanker to slight, unless you are keen to condemn anyone that appreciates the greatness of Hal Jay?

I think brokered chinese religious shows from 5am - 9am would get higher ratings on WBAP than Don Imus.

You forget, Imus was on in this market several years ago and got no numbers.

It won't happen, you can bank on it.
 
Sheesh, why all the hate concerning Hal Jay? He seemed to be the one person we could all generally agree on. Say what you want, but for me, Hal is the best thing going in DFW mornings. He cuts across a lot of demo boundaries and finds a way to be fresh and entertaining even after 26 years. (Chapman had long run out of steam at that point in his local career.) The bits are funny, the chatter is topical, and with those tiny bits of time he gets between news stories, he's got to make the schtick work, and quickly...and he does, and it does. Yeah, sure, I'm not going to be real objective on this subject, but I've taken in a LOT of morning radio over the years, and I know good from garbage. So who's YOUR choice...Kraddick? Dorsey? Piolin? ;)

You don't replace a Hal Jay, and certainly not with a Don Imus. Send Imus to a station that needs help. Build an oldies station on 96.7 and make Imus your morning guy there.

Was that aimed at me? I don't really hate Hal Jay, I just find him highly overrated. On the plus side, he can think on his feet and comes up with good one-liners. But I find the bits corny, and to me he sounds like he's spitting all over the mike. Also, the "most recognizable laugh in the Metroplex" sounds like he's hacking up a hairball.

Who's my choice? Lately, it's been the Jagger show, but I still flip around a lot. I've never heard Imus, but I doubt I'd listen to him much.
 
Nah, not aimed just at you; a couple of others weren't too kind as well! I'm just pointing out that the guy still has it after all these years. Corny? Indeed! Maybe I'm ready for a little "corny" after years of listening to Howard and others, with nothing left for the imagination or "theater of the mind," or just a lot of hate talk or stripper talk or complaining about things I don't care about. But that's just me voicing my 2-cents' worth, not trying to force the guy on anybody, but I would hate someone reading this thread who never tried out Hal's show to write him off before they listened for themselves. Sure, the under-40 crowd is probably not going to be into him, but the older ones seem to eat it up.

Patting myself on the back? Not sure how that applies here. Explain, please. This is not the same as someone who would, say, blow sunshine up Gene and Julie's *** on here as damage control just to keep their job. Hal's 26+ years speak for themselves. If I lost my job tomorrow, I'd still be tuning in.
 
Dislike Hal Jay? Find him over-rated? The audience appears to disagree. Strongly. He's still one of the three or four morning people you have to beat here to get anywhere. And I've never met anyone who didn't like the guy. And when you consider that Hal was tasked with taking an established music/entertainment morning show and evolving it into a (what's become) highly succesful, long-term morning news/entertainment show, his work is all the more impressive. Imus may wind up here somewhere, but I rather suspect Hal has that job as long as he wants it. Another magnificent example of a question that exists nowhere outside of the thread that contains it.

All the true greats in this business (e.g. Chapman, Jack, Casem, Cooke, Keillor, Winchell, Petey Greene and yeah, even Hal Jay) have one universal component in common - age. At one time or another, every one of these names have been idolized and emulated by countless of thousands of people. However, they all get older, lose some skill and almost instantly they are overrated when they have earned the right to leave on their own terms. This isn't professional sports. If you are some once-great QB fluttering from team to team avoiding the ever-growing twilight of your career, you need to go and will probably be forced to do so. Radio? Many, many things have gone by the wayside. Respect being grandfathered in is indeed NOT one of them.

Dean is right. The path to glory in this town on morning radio goes through one overweight, corny, schticky... but great Mr. Hal Jay.

Unfortunately, jdean, maybe that question is being asked. This thread got its energy from the possibility that corporate Citadel may look to force Imus into markets. Why wouldn't it? If you are big company deciding to take a risk on Imus, then you had better give him the best chance you can. And you would have to put him in fiscal conservative Dallas. People on this board who label him a "liberal" are not seeing the big picture. His sense of humor is "old white guy." And his "liberal" opinions don't come out as often as you might think.

I bowed out of this conversation the other day because I don't want to make any cases against Hal Jay. To be honest, I've never listened to his show. For the last decade and a half, my mornings have been spent with Norm, the Musers, NPR, a newspaper and the Internet.

But Hal Jay is local, and I always pull for the local guy over a syndicated option. And I trust the majority opinion on this board that Hal Jay is a treasure to this market.

But, everyone, you should worry. If Citadel is about to shell out the bucks for Imus, then it is going to put him in all the major markets it can. And we're on that list. It's just a matter of which station.

Add Willis Johnson and Joe Bagby on that list. They both have done mornings for over 30 years in this market.

Just seeing Imus' face is scary enough as it is, for me. :eek: Does he ever smile? What's with the constant frowning?

I haven't ever listened to Bagby, but Willis Johnson is a gem, and deserves way more attention that he's ever given on this board and within discussions of the other notables doing morning radio here. He's all about the community and forms a tight bond with his audience...plus he understands about giving something back, and does. That's one of the best examples of radio still being done the way it once was.

Imus has referred to Hillary Clinton as both "satan" and the "devil." Do you think that is because he's LEFT of Clinton.
