Imus on WILD-AM Today

I didn't hear anyone complain when Imus was talking about different methods of capital punishment that could be used on Rumsfeld, Bush, Cheney et al.

You wont hear any static over anything to do with bush.. But when you make a comment that was in humor only about anything to do with someone's hair, (Knappy Head) then the world will end then.

Making fun of those in power is often funny and sometimes a public service if they are misbehaving.

Making fun of those at the bottom of the food chain is bullying. A lot of bullies think what they are doing is funny. A lot of wannabe-bullies think bullies are funny, especially if the target is one rung down from where the wannabe is. Which is usually the way it plays out.

Can't you see the difference?

For example, I (and many other liberals) were appalled by Clinton's behavior and were glad when he got publically spanked. Did I think it should have been turned into an impeachment hearing and suck up millions of tax dollars and divert our attention away from Al Quada? No. But, I was glad that he got spanked.

Making fun of women basketball players who have tight curly hair comes off as mean to anyone who isn't trying to claw their way up the food chain. And, those who engage in that behavior should get backhanded by society just like Clinton was backhanded for his bad behavior.

Have we no standards?

An apology isn't enough, by the way. Imus should actually do something to show he's serious - go spend some time with nappy-headed teenage boys who don't have fathers. Maybe they'll all learn how to be men together (instead of bullies). And stop calling nappy-headed women basketball players vile and disgusting names and learn to respect themselves enough not to stoop to that level.

It's not about censorship. It's about right and wrong.

It not the Nappy head comment , It the Ho thing got me P off . Look at that Pic of Imus, He is part of the Nappy Head Crew ( Or Wannabee Nappy Head ) . These Young ladies are in College , Playing Basketball, and Living The American Dream . Why would anyone want to rip these ladies apart for what they are doing ? If anyone of these ladies was your daughter , How would you feel about" Old Imus "Comments ?

From watching the replay on TV of him first making the comment I think what he was trying to do was imitate the way he thought "the brothers" might be describing the team as if he was one of them... I don't think he was trying to put them down I think it was just the opposite. He was trying to make them sound Badd Ass!
What I think he did was make the fatal mistake that many white performers seem to make over and over again (radio, comedian, TV etc.). And that is to forget that they are not black! Trying to use the same kind of talk (n-word, bitches, hoe's etc.) without that being the fact changes the whole context by removing the obvious sarcasm to the racism. These are completely prejudicial and racist statements to begin with. But when a black person is using this language it obviously sarcastic and therefore can be funny. There is no presumption of this when it is used by anyone other race. He's not the first idiot to make this mistake but the facts are still the same. I don't think he was trying to be a racist but by not seeing the problem in the first place still shows that he is insensitive to what he did. He is at-least immediately apologizing which is all he can really do at this point.

Lesson for White people (myself included..) we are not black. Don't pretend all wounds are healed or that we have any idea of how it feels to be black. We don't. Racism hurts... The fact that black people have gotten to the point that they can joke about by using these terms doesn't mean that it implies the same thing at all when we use them. It doesn't.

I am not at all shocked that "talk fossil" imus , would denigrate the courageous Black female athletes of Rutgers with his blatant racist remarks along with his producer bernard mcGuirk... BOTH, without question, need to be fired...
Anything less sends a message that racist hate speech is promoted and accepted.. This is NOT the first time imus was sited for racist remarks on his program...I doubt both of these vermin would be fired because talk radio is infested with disgruntled white (mostly irish) bigots from Oreilly, Hannity, to Imus, McGiurk,Callahan, on and on.
Its the good ole white boy sanctuary..WTKK is in fact a nest of racist white vipers from
eg Jay severin going unchallenged repeated referring to mexcians as "wetbacks", now the lame Imus show refering to Black Female college althletes as "jigaboos".. Where is the outrage?
The silent condenmation only emboldens these vermin.
These bigots follow the same "mea culpa" patterns:
They spew racist hate speech and sputter the familiar " I made a mistake I was "insensitive"....
followed by the ooh so familiar "some of my best friends as black" excuse.. Witnessed today,as the pathetic imus cowardly tried to defend his outrageous racism by declaring "I supported Harold Ford" and I have black kids with sickle cell anemia at my ranch"//.... Oh how mighty white of ya imus ... *pukes*
The fact that these racist vermin are nonetheless supported by advertisers and listeners and allowed to continue to pollute the amerikkkan radio stations is only further proof of how much america needs to progress..

This is the most press Imus has had since he wrote "God's Other Son"...and it's working.

The more attention paid, the longer the career. The comments were no worse than what's said on Sunday night primetime TV on Fox. If it were to be ignored, it would go away. Apologies won't retract the statement. Firing him won't make it go away. What's done is done. Now it's a matter of keeping his name in the press.

When was the last time anyone talked about Don Imus?

true.. when WAS the last time? Thing is they've been doing this schtick for years. I have soundbites from the show in the 90s that could be construed as just as offensive, including the original version of "The First Lady Is A Tramp," sung by "Rush Limbaugh"... And Imus refers to Bernie as a "bald headed nazi" all the time--and Bernie's character certainly fits that role (by character, I mean the on-air character he's portraying... I mean, it IS a character, correct? :D

it'll bring out the standard response... African-American groups and activists will speak out against it, others will say people are too "PC" and take potshots at Jackson and Sharpton.. and on and on it goes

that shouldn't be taken to mean I find it acceptable... just laying out the typical cycle.

When was the last time anyone talked about Don Imus?

Good point. Decades ago, before syndication when Imus was just in NY, he had the funniest, bar none, radio program in the universe. I used to time my trips down south on I95 to coincide with his show (and the same with Stern on the way back.) Then he started to suck, especially when he got remarried and had a kid, and started to talk like he'd invented childbirth and fatherhood. Then he got concerned with his legacy and the interminable promos for the Imus Ranch for Kids with Cancer started. WEEI got smart and dumped him none to soon.

Imus' act used to include how he didn't care what anyone thought of him, which was the complete opposite of the truth. His downward spiral started when he gave that imfamous speech in DC where he skewered Clinton and found out that his liberal pals, like Frank Rich, didn't think he was funny any more. He needed them for support for the ranch and couldn't afford to alienate them, especially when reports started coming in that the Imus Ranch was about the most inefficient charity in the country, if not the world. He was effectively de-balled, started sucking up to Democrats and bashing Republicans, essentially losing his edge. Since then, have you noticed that he never talks about how he's "#1" in xyz market? And for good reason. Now he only remarks that he's the #1 show on MSNBC, which is little like saying you're the tallest person in Japan.

Regards,
TSB

He was an idiot when he was on the air in Dallas, he's still an idiot now.

Ohhhh please tell me you're kidding, one has nothing to do with the other, it is not a "liberal" vs "conservative" situation, any attempt to make it so is beyond STUPID. Ill lay it out for you as simply as possible. Listen, while Imus may be sort of a grandatherly old figure to some of you let me spell it out with no ambiguity. The transcript i saw makes reference to the nappy headed hoes, ok not the most HUGE deal but when he starts referencing "jiggaboos"....."------" is essentially a synonum for "------", they do not necessarily hold the same weight because "------" is a word only used by the oldest of the generation, it's essentially passe, yet it's meaning still holds true. IF Imus knows this (which he does, say what you want he is not a stupid man) then he's the racist that many see him as. If he did not know this then he was even more stupid to reference a word that he was unshure of theexact meaning of, however there is no doubt that he knew that it is derogatory.

He blew it, please stop trying to spin it here.

Pathetic how defenders of this racist radio fossil are whining about "free speech".. and "political correctness"> Interesting how for these same types, their love of free speech goes out of the window when it comes to other issues eg the Iraqui occupation..IN that instance we all should wave our flags and goose steppin in line chanting " support the troops"..And anyone who DARE speak out against the troops are vilified..(remember what happened to Bill Mahr ) .. In juxtaposition, when it comes to destroying this country from within with radio racist/hate speech, then suddenly "free speech" is the order of the day....
Decent people realize that there is NO doubt that Imus should be TOSSED OUT like the trash he is.. This is NOT his first racist tirade..his hate speech has been tolerated since the 80's.. Money talks though .. As long as amerikkk'a white racist male audience keeps his ratings in check generating the almighty dollar, well then its good for america... formula remedy: just aplogize, sound whiney and contrite and wait for the dust to settle until next time.. on and on.
Imus wondered aloud on his show the following day "what the big deal was". People should not be offended by 'some idiot comment meant to be amusing," Imus said.
Amusing eh?? to whom?
In previous years, Imus called Gwen Ifill, then working at the Times, "a cleaning lady" and described one of the paper's sports columnists, William C. Rhoden, as a "quota hire." Both of those journalists are Black..
Interesting how this clueless white buffoon never once admitted or acknowleged the OBVIOUS---that his latest vitriol was RACIST.
Instead, the self pitying white bigot called his words: insensitive
thoughtless and stupid...
I don't blame Imus as much as I blame the Media/ advertisers/guests like Tim Russert who appeared the NEXT day and said nothing about the bombshell to imus/and america who TOLERATES/PROTECTS hatespeach over the airwaves...disgusting

Howie's all over the Imus controversy today, saying that people are referring to the station that runs the I-man
as "WTKKK" now...he feels great because years ago, Imus libelled Howie's wife on air and now maybe there's a bit of retribution. Making fun of Imus
for his "snow" and booze situation, past incidents (White House dinner), poor ratings, associating with the
likes of Kerry and Barnicle, etc. He says Imus has pretty much gotten a free ride over some of these ("what
if Rush or I had said this?")

Calling for the execution of the President and/or Vice-President is infinitely worse than name-calling.

Howie's wife is/was not a public figure, hence the lawsuit.

Imus will continue to get a pass for this incident. He's saying "I'm a good person."

A caller to Howie's show said Stern was ripping Imus on his show today; another said "today was the first day I found myself wishing I'd gotten Sirius, so I could have heard Stern talk about it" (would find it entertaining...)

Don Imus tried and failed at creating a radio "bit"--he failed for the same reason ALL white people fail when they attempt to copy racial humor. The fact that few people can get past the words to the intent, speaks volumes. There are racists in the media (and everywhere else) in the United States--stupid old Imus is not one of them (it's not as if he goes off on an anti-Semetic tirade when asked to take a breathalyzer test). White people get it through your heads: "People of color" can say any damn thing they please and they can indulge in whatever stereotyping they please because they are not Caucasian. When they do it, it's humor; when Don Imus does it, he has to answer to Al Sharpton. And just once, I would like to see someone tell Sharpton to got stuff it, "No I will not apologize to you nor will I increase your ratings by appearing on your show."
