Indy needs a Funny Morning Show

Mid West Clubber said:
Oh, and as for Smiley,,,, Yeah he's okay, but he seems like he targets mainly female soccer Moms. I think Smiley has got the talent and the humour to be really funny if he was on a Mainstream CHR, or a Rock station instead of a Hot AC.
and just what's so bad about SOCCER MOMS???? (and why did you feel that you had to specify "Female" soccer moms? Isn't that implied by the word MOM?) You kids today! :D

Its pretty good when the music scheduling on THE TRACK is funnier than any of the people in Indy.
Ouch!! Way to kick 'em when they're down. From what I hear, there are a lot of people at the track that will be out of a job soon. That's not too funny after all. :-\

;D For your info im not a kid, im almost 30.... The reason I said Female Soccer Moms is,,,, Well thats just what ZPL morning shows have always catered too, given the topics they discuss, 90% of the callers that call in and so fourth. On the other hand, Bob and Tom is too much catered to Red Neck Men... I liked The Morning Mess because it was good comedy for both Male and Female, I dont like Female targeted talk, but I dont like male targeted toilet humour either. The Morning Mess, and old Big Dumb Show were both good funny shows that catered to both sexes. I would also love to see a funny Black guy get a spot on WHHH. I would love to hear a show like KPWRs Big Boy on a station like WHHH. Another really good and entertaining morning show that caters to both sexes is DJ Laz in the morning on Power 96 WPOW Miami. The male targeted morning shows are nothing but talk about Boobs, Farts, and Beer,,, while the female targeted morning shows are always talking about Parenting, PMS, How to make sex better with their husband, and celebrity Gossip...... Gag me with a spoon, I,ll just turn on my XM and listen to NON-STOP Dance-Techno music all the way to work. At least it will wake me up. I would still prefer some morning funnies over pure music in the morning though. At least on Satellite I have Ted Kelly's World party, which is a funny international morning show for both sexes, also on Sirius, we can listen to the BBC Radio One morning show... I,ll tell ya, the Brits do comedy alot better than hoosiers these days, their accent alone is even funny.. ;D

Syndicated shows performing well--and funny--Kidd Kraddick and Zippo in the Morning/ABC Radio Net.

Kidd Kraddick is pretty funny and is mass appeal to both sexes. If I ran a small market CHR I would definately carry that show..... However, I think Indy needs local talent. Hoosiers have a different sense of humour than say,,,, People in California, New York, or Texas. Besides that, I like to hear about local things in general. Kraddick has probably never even been to Indy, and I doubt a Syndicated Kraddick show would work here on a station like Radio Now 100.9..... I want local news, Local Traffic, Local Gossip, and Local Jokes. Kidd Kraddick would be a perfect fit for a station like WBWB Bloomington, or WAZY Lafayette.

Yeah, Imus would be cool on WIBC FM..... Funny and Sarcastic, but still not local. You cant beat a funny local Indiana morning show like The Morning Mess. Thats why Bob and Tom still do so well... I will admit that Bob and Tom are very talented and yes they are funny, but it isnt family friendly were you can let your kids and girlfriend-Wife listen with ya. It also seems Bob and Tom cater more to the Blue Collar male than a more sophisticated male. And how many guys ya know actually listen to Smiley. His target audience is Woman in their 30s.

going back to bob and tom. before syndication, in the days they played music besides their bits, wfbq did a cash song. once in the morning and once in the afternoon they played a song and the first person to call in won the money.they always picked the next cash song.

one morning the winner picks a ted nugent song.

tom says ," we don`t play that song."

the guy picked about two more nugent songs , same "we don`t play that."

finally in his annoying sarcastic voice tom says "we will pick the cash song.'

can`t an exception be made in a case like that. I know the guy won money but thats a lousy way to treat a listener.

another story. tom says he wants to show everything something.he starts to play "sweet jane" by lou reed with the great long gutar opening.the first new music on wfbq`s dull playlist in some time.and all the show cast can do is rag about "it`s so long."," does it ever end"ect while it`s playing. then just as the vocal starts tom cuts it short and praises john melencamp for being original by copying the exact length of the lou reed opening (go figure) and the show cast says things like "that`s more like it"ect.reed`s gutarist played circles around melencamp.

even though reed was the innovator , to them he was nothing and melencamp was the man.

Wow, dude both those incidents were maybe 12-14 years ago. Really you've been holding that in this long? Time to let the disdain & bitterness go :)

actually I don`t think about those incidents much.hardly at all.I just remembered them when the morning team discussion came up. I pretty much ignore them now because I figure they are the same and are not as interesting when they don`t annoy me.

the problem was not just them. it also was wfbq itself. the reluctence to expand an playlist even for an one-time exception like the cash song incident or instead of trash talking a great gutar piece when it was playing to make the point tom wanted to make to me reflects on the station also.

wfbq acted and still acts like they are a rock fans friend and are so tight on what they play.

It's obvious that Flashback has a hardon for Bob and Tom and Q95, and is quick to spread his/her opinions as fact.

Which 'people' that B&T used to 'pay' did they 'let go' in an effort to keep more money for themselves? Just curious.

Steve Salge has been with the show since Moses was a pup....never 'let go.' Ron Sexton is working, and doing fine. Others have come and gone....that's the nature of the radio business, as well as any other business, for that matter. Look around the Burger King where you work, Flashback. Are the same people working there that worked there five, ten, fifteen, twenty years ago? Didn't think so.

Dave Dugan, Pat Carlini, Mark Patrick, Jay Baker....all USED to contribute....all are gone now. Hell, Chick even left once. I don't think you'll find that 'Bob and Tom saving the money for themselves' is the reason ANY of thse individuals left. Ricky Rydell? Can't say. Maybe someone closer to the show can comment. But Flashback's one trick pony needs to be taken to the glue factory. Get over it.

Now, back to the topic at hand. Funny Indy morning shows? B&T...Smiley....That's about it, in my book. But I don't listen to Indy morning radio much.

Spock on Star Trek once said, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". Flashback
needs to understand this. Bob And Tom reach millions of fans. Although, they are good entertainers
and try to sound as if they are speaking to just you. The fact is that they are speaking to
the whole USA. They cannot change the direction of their show for just one guy!!!!!!!!!!!

Dugan is still on B&T (Bart McAllister, voice over guy on bits). Kristi even left (that is how Libby worked at the Q).

Bob & Tom have hacked their way to the top. I thought they were funnier in their youth.

There are certain people that reinvented the way people listen to radio. Pioneers in their field. Limbaugh, Stern, and Bob and Tom all come to mind. When you hear how those guys struggled early on but kept at it, it is pretty inspiring. They had a vision and kept at it. Some of the stuff they have done over the years (I Spent the War in Indiana probably my fav) are still roll out your chair funny 20 years later.

It is pretty tough to deny what a brilliant radio mind Tom is. He and his crew(s) over the years have consistently made radio people want to listen to. And at the end of the day, that is what matters most.

Screw up the morning show ratings and you screw up your whole radio station. Many have tried
to out do Bob and Tom only to have the station fail overall just for trying. Last time I checked the
Indy dial it was full of jocks rolling in laughter at their own jokes. Most of the humor was about the
toilet and sex organs. As stations just try to out do and duplicate eachother, listeners go away!!!

The next station sold in Indy real cheap might be the one that tries to take on Bob and Tom.

Its the "I have a Dream" type of story? I'm simply saying that B & T were funnier in their younger days. It wasn't Bob, Tom, Rush, Howard who reinvented the radio...its was the Management, Owners and the FCC.

My dog is funnier than Howard Stern. The people are getting tired of cheap smut!!!
Isn't Howard going down the toilet about now!!!

Well...what ya gonna do when you're a middleaged "Shockjock" who is on a fast burnout? C'mon, after a few years time people are gonna be used to all the shock stuff and make it harder for old Howard to keep coming up with new stuff..he's gotta be getting close to wanting to call it quits. For his sake....and..ours...
